While Blu-ray has already won the HD format war, there's still a long time to pass before it surpasses the current dominant home video format, DVD. How long? Three and a half years, if the Entertainment Merchants Association (EMA) is to be believed.

In their comprehensive annual report, the EMA purported that "in 2012, sales of Blu-ray Discs will exceed those of standard DVDs and will generate sales of $9.5 billion."

As for 2007, nearly nine million high-definition discs were sold, generating more than $260 million. Meanwhile, 12,177 DVDs released in 2007, down from a peak of 13,950 two years prior.

It seems the market is slowly but surely shifting to Blu-ray as the home video format of choice. Enjoy your remaining years digital video discs.

Holy shi*, I thought it would come quicker than that. Blu ray is selling better than DVD in its beginning time frame, so does anyone know how long DVD took to take over VHS?

Good news for Sony.  Bring those discs down in price though.  $30-$35 is way too much for some of these new releases.  When that happens I'll buy buy buy.  Who am I kidding, I already do.

Wow! This transition to Blu-ray is taking longer than a lot of folks anticipated. Guess DVD isnt dead after all. Atleast we know the PS4 wont kick off another new format that will drive its prices through the ceiling like it did the PS3 at launch.

3 years huh? then that means 6years. Format adoption always takes twice as long as the "experts" say. the proble being that people are animals of habit and the habit they're saying will change in three years is buying DVDs, prehaps they think the push to digital broadcasts next year will change that but they issue is still adoption of HDTV, there are still people who dont want to upgrade to HD tvs or arnt well versed enough in their existance to even care so what good is a bluray to them? Especially when they can cost twice what a DVD costs. And I'm only talking about the US! Other countries are probably just as hard headed in some cases possibly even moreso.

What needs to happen before wide spread adoption is a drop in prices not only of the players, but the media itself and the tvs we watch them on. signifigant drops on all three sides will happen bt ins three years? and expecting people to just roll with those prices before then? No... not when we have to spend 5 bucks on a gallon of gas just to go get them.

I think it will be sooner than that, since HD tvs are selling more and more as time passes, and especially, when there are hardly any standard tvs on the shelves to choose from anymore. HD is taking over, a lot quicker than what they say. PSN ID-Demented007

DVD will never go away, but it will slowly fall in numbers.

    • 10:46pm BST - June 25th, 2008

How did you guys think this was coming sooner? You really think that DVD's will go away that quickly.  Most of the older generation don't really care for HD and It takes a long time for transition into a new format.  Three years is a good extimate but that can never be right cause they have no clue what might happen.. it might raise to be close to 5-6 years if the market does not go as planned.. all depends on the consumers interest.

    • 11:38pm BST - June 25th, 2008

I think this is a good thing, but I'm not sure if 3 years is really accurate. I still buy about 60% dvd just because I don't think every movie is worth purchasing on blu-ray. My main problem is the price. If the movie is animated, or something from the discovery channel than I snatch it up on blu-ray without thinking twice, but some movies don't look much better than an upscaled dvd, especially considering the price differentiation. However, I'm sure once blu-ray becomes a more widely adopted format in the average home, prices will drop. As for those who believe downloadable content will be the next format, I don't believe they will be able to stream blu-ray quality to the masses this generation.

Who needs DVD's any more? Micro$oft does.      i dont understand why people are refusing to buy HDTV's now. they're cheap enough already.  if your complaining about them being too exspensive...  you bought a PS3 4-5-600 dollars... double that and presto you got yourself a HDTV. get a job or stop buying stupid crap you dont need and you can get yourself a TV. rumor is by 2009 SDTV signal will be fazed out by corporate America forcing 1080i HD signal.

Blu ray needs to come down in price BIG TIME before it starts making strides past DVD. Whos gonna pay £20+ for a poxy film you watch once then put on the shelf for the next 30 years

I don't believe any of the crap about the prices of the discs.  When I see a dual-disc Blu-ray selling for the same price as a single-disc and they're both new releases, there's something wrong there.  I'll start my Blu-ray collection when the prices drop. Until then, I'll keep buying $5 DVDs.

@Black47 - it's not rumor, it's fact. But it's not phasing out SD for HD, rather it's phasing out analog transmission for digital. Nothing to do with HD.

I like to save my money - and buy DVD's that are discounted. Bluray is too expensive and I dont notice that much difference even with my 40" HD TV. DVD is fine for most of the movies.
