As the latest Electronic Gaming Montly hits subscribers, details on the upcoming PS3 exclusive Killzone 2 are leaking onto the net. A few facts include Guerrilla's use of the Cell processor as well as background updates on a few of the returning characters from the Killzone universe.
According to the 12 page preview in EGM, Killzone 2 will be utilizing a whopping four and a half of the six cores in the Cell processor. For technically a first generation title (it's Guerrilla's first PS3 game), that's quite remarkable.

“Sony basically has an international forum for sharing character technology, animation tools and graphics shaders." said Guerrilla Games’ Technical Directer Michiel van der Leeuw. "We’ve even taken a few tricks directly from the Resistance guys at Insomniac, and we’ve even been talking directly to the God of War guys in Santa Monica."
Other details from the magazine preview:
- There will be more than just the Arc Cannon when it comes to Helgast weather-controlling weapons
- Don't expect all the levels to appear the same, some levels will highlight the "natural beauty" of Helghan
- Templar is now a Colonel and commands a Cruiser called New Sun

I cant wait for this game oh wait I have been waiting for it this long. Well eitherway I hope its not another haze
Can some post ( or pm ) me the scans ?
wow another freaking FPS
Let's c what will come from KZ2. It better be good...
I wonder what "four and a half core" means...
I'm not usually the one to scream 'old', but this is about 4 days late.
Anyways, I can't wait for more info on this game. Hopefully we'll see a new level at E3.
man it's cool
Christ, that is amazing. Well done Guerilla.
Can't wait for Fb 09, i loved the original!
Lets just hope this game is as awesome as it sounds.
Notice how they didn't say anything about the A.I.?
I hope I will be proven wrong, but I think they're not working on it too much.
don't like FPS, but this and resistance 2 are the only fps that got me all hype.
@MAX PAYNE
Actually, they talk about it in nearly every interview. They said that they've made the AI quite impressive.

Yeah, baby!!!!!!!!!
What in the world does this mean "4 1/2 cores out of six" mean??!!
this will not be another haze....and 4.5 cores means its almost out of processing room....I believe you can only use 5 out of six at 1 time.....
Please guerrilla, don't let this be a let down like haze!
God of War 3 must be good. I'm thinking the guys at Santa Monica have a nice suprise for us at E3.
- I like how Sony devs help each other out.
@ Carl Do you think they will have clan support for the online?? If they do then we should get the other guy's in on this...
this game better get good reviews or i am goin to be very upset
Its cool to see developers helping each other out.
no you can use six cores out of 8 (1 of them is a failsafe and another is reserved for the OS) its technically using 75% power then but its probably less than that because theres more optimation techniques to be discovered im sure
@tanner1
The PS3 has sixth SPE (Synergestic Processing Elements) and one PPE (Power Processing Element). There is a seventh SPE which is dedicated to security and the operativ system (XMB). There is also the last and eight SPE which is disabled and cannot be used by anything (due to production yields).

psn id: gingo... i know some people are sceptical about this game but i am really looking forward to it hopefully its not another haze and ends up being a letdown
i cant wait so many good games coming.
I hope this game has really good gameplay. It will take an incredibly good game to be as good as MGS 4.
I love how sharp and clean the game looks already, with a smooth framerate to boot. They just need to sort out those little loading hitches when moving through to the next area.
Thank god there's gonna be levels with "natural beauty" I was getting a bit worried that all the levels were gonna look like the demo.
This just makes me want this game more and more. Only Sony's developers can better utilise the ps3 at the moment. I really don't believe Kojima san utilised the ps3 to its maximum as he claims for MGS4. I am glad the KZ2 is looking awesome even though it utilises only 4.5 of the cell's processors. I wonder how the game would look like if they utilised all these processors...Well hope the other developers will learn from this.
Free Radical is preparing Time Splitters 4. I know they have learnt from their mistakes with Haze and will make TS4 a memorable game
imagine what all 6 cells would look like
I love the fact that developers are helping each other out to get more out of the cell. This makes the learning curve alot shorter. The end result is a higher quality game without all the hair pulling.
This game definitely takes away from all the talk about Gears of War 2...
after this comes out in 2009 we need some RPG games, or something new.
Love the first killzone. Even though it had its flaws (like every other game) it was still a fun experience, cant wait for kz2. ready to stick it to the helgast again.
whats this about a Helgast weather-controlling weapons?
HEY JUSTIN! Isn't there 8 cores in the cell proccessor?
Now that BOTH Insomniac[Ratchet&Clank, Resistance]AND Santa Monica[God Of War]are helping Guerilla wth Killzone II, I do not see it failing now. Not a chance, this game WILL live up to expectations people mark my words on it!!!!!!
wicked!
I knew they were talking to Insomniac but I didn't think they'd be talking to Santa Monica. I had my doubts after playing the first, but with 2 of the best PS3 devs out there helping, I don't see how this could fail. Looks amazing every time I see it.
Nice to see Templar back as well.
I wantsss it my precioussssssssss ;)
