Cage: PS3 is 'the best platform' for Heavy Rain

Developer Quantic Dream has described Sony’s PlayStation 3 as “the best platform” in which to release its hotly anticipated mystery thriller Heavy Rain on.

Speaking during a Q&A session at the London Eurogamer Expo this past weekend, studio founder David Cage revealed that the decision to plump for Sony’s black box boiled down to the console’s impressive technical prowess.

“Whatever I answer, my answer will be suspicious… I think it had to be on PlayStation 3 for two main reasons: the hardware, the architecture of the PS3 is extremely powerful in the way it is structured. If you make a real PS3 engine, then you can have really fantastic performances. If you try to port from another platform, then it becomes difficult,” he said.

“This is a console we all love at the studio. I play PSOne, PS2, it’s really a part of my culture. The controller is part of my home… and it’s a really, really powerful console.”

Elsewhere, Cage added that he feels it is possible to achieve emotional content without the need for ultra realistic visuals, though conceded the team’s approach to Heavy Rain resulted in the need for that extra graphical muscle afforded by the PS3.

“I’m not so much into graphics, to be honest with you, I don’t believe you need ultra realistic graphics to get emotion, you can get that with very low graphics. But we wanted to create emotion from believable characters, that was the idea. With this approach PS3 was by far the best platform.”

Heavy Rain is due out exclusively on PS3 in 2010.

     Well if a game is made specifically for the PS3 you get great results, Uncharted, Ratchet etc. When a game is ported over from PC and 360 you run into problems because of how advanced the PS3's development tech is. Anyway I'm happy a game this complicated was made for PS3 only so I don't have to worry about porting issues. Can't wait to play this one. I need something that's going to make me think.

    Anyways they've took the right choice picking the PS3 since we have yet to see a game fully utilize the PS3's power. Uncharted 2 look great but im sure we can get a better looking game.

    @DonMatteo

    Don the PPE is the one core, it has access to main memory and dispenses jobs to the SPUs.  The SPUs are sub processers, no access to main memory.  SPUs do not have "Branch Prediction" circuitry, meaning they can't do OOE (out of order executions), meaning no AI (artifical intelligence), no advanced physics, no game control.  Of the 8 SPUs one is inoperative for quality control reasons and another is locked into holding the OS (operating system) for the remaining 6 SPUs as the OS is different from the core (PPE).

    what am I trying to prove? that saying 'first' no more makes me a c0ck than spawn of stumpy referring to himself in the third person and ripping a cheesy line from fight club.

    it's amazing that I'm immature for writting 'first' and yet calling someone a c0ck is fine.

    thanks for the help with my post though. how about you learn to spell 'letter' and 'basically' before you chime in?

    @ J3ff3

    The difference is that ripping off a cheesy line to use as a signature has no effect on others, as it's passively included in posts which has no effect on other users; it's just a personalisation option. Posting, however, does have an effect on others as it's directly interacting with other users and you therefore expect others to read it. Signatures have no impact on people as it's someone's opinion as to whether they don't like it or not, but it has more of a meaningful reason. Informing people that you're the first person to post does not, and it's more of an annoyance as there's no reason for doing so. Therefore, posting "first" does make you more of a c0ck than ripping off a cheesy line.

    There, try to criticise my grammar.

    SPUs are not sub-processors as you mention but general purpose processors, you should read this : http://www.tilander.org/aurora/comp/gdc2009_Tilander_Filippov_SPU.pdf

    once you hype up a game it makes sense not to rush it to market. at this point though they really need to stop talking about it until it reaches a milestone or until it's ready.

    I, for one, think the game does look really good (Not perfect at all but very good), but I find it's a little hypocritical to talk about Uncanny valleys and such and then say that graphics arnt really important. It's like he's trying to say "hey if the graphics dont look as good as we claim it's not a big deal." Half of the SELLING POINT on this game is how it looks.

    Also, people who post "first" and nothing else out themselves as idiots as a rule. Get over it and move on with your sad pathetic life.

    @Clover

    A good read, thanks.

  25. J3ff3

    • 5:52pm GMT - November 2nd, 2009

    @beasley2k

    you're going to great lengths to show that a signature somehow has less of an effect on people than a post and then relating that to how much of a c0ck it makes you.

    your reasoning is flawed however. take being 'weird' for example. person A could jack off to pictures of their sister in the privacy of their own bedroom, while person B could announce in a crowded street that they love smearing chocolate on their breasts.

    the private nature of A doesn't make them less weird than B, and A certainly couldn't call B weird.

    so the 'passive' nature of signatures, which by the way is incorrect because they are present in threads and are moderated, has little to do with it.

    therefore the public nature of my post has no bearing on me being more of a c0ck than him. content matters. he shouldn't throw stones in glass houses.

    J3f33..., what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this forum is now dumber for reading it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

    This is getting old! I hear the same thing over and over, "it can only be made on ps3". I get that, now its time to put it out, it had a release dated in November, now next year. I want the game so instead of talking about it, lets work on getting it done. How about a date push up instead of back. This is the closest game to Shenmue, so Im looking fowarded to it, not about what it only can be made on.

    @tgf5 - if you can't keep up with what are basic premises, don't bother commenting.

    it was a fairly simple explanation of why my post being public, and spawn of stumpy's signature 'apparently' being less so, doesn't make me more of a c0ck than he is.

    don't blame me if beasley2k tried to confuse the matter with bullsh1t.

    as i said, stumpy can't call me a c0ck given his sh1t signature.
