Fancy having a peek at the car damage featured in Polyphony Digital’s 2010 racing extravaganza Gran Turismo 5? Of course you do. Seen below is a video filmed off-screen at this year’s Tokyo Game Show, depicting a snazzy Ferrari 458 speeding around the track while colliding with various obstacles in an effort blemish that pretty paint work.

Interestingly enough, the vehicle seems to be in fairly good shape having endured such a beating, though it should give some indication as to the amount of damage you can subject your motor to in the game. No doubt a better example while surface later down the line, though.

Gran Turismo 5 is due out in Japan on March 31, 2010. A western release has yet to be announced.

It doesn't even look like it hit anyhting. That is one tough car. Some paint chips flew. They were able to do car damage without doing car damage.

Is it just me or the car didn't take much damage , i'm not  impress !!!!

     What car damage???

  5. benstevens

    • 10:06am BST - September 28th, 2009

Needs way more damage than this.  I understand they dont want to turn it into a MotorStorm racing game but this is just a tad too gentle.  More crumples and flying panels please.

Saying this guys they do have another 6 months of work on this game so im sure this will be sorted.

Guys you arent serious arent you? What do you expect if it had totaly realistic crash damage then in almost every hit the car will be ruined and the race would stop.So dont be silly...

PSU forgot the mention that the damage is still being worked on, which they say on ign and which is also where these videos originated from

Seems like a pretty pointless novelty feature (in it's current execution).  If all that happens is small blemishes to the paint work that's pretty lame. The bodywork didn't even seem to deform.  Acceleration, cornering and braking performance should be affected too.  It's frustrating how unlifelike this series is in many ways. For a game that refers to it's self as the "Real Driving Simulator" the collision mechanics and body defomation seem a bit behind the times.

    • 10:25am BST - September 28th, 2009

@8: I don't think they blame it for not having "total realistic" car damage, but to not even have semi-realistic car damage (just look at 0:19, you realy think that a car should still look like this after running into a wall with 120km/h, even in a game?)

But honestly, a Sony Rep allready said that the car-damage is a WIP so chances are high that we'll be able to total a car when the game ships next year.

Seem to be a distinct lack of crumple zones on that car, still it is work in progress and an 09 release is looking unlikely.

I dont know why people care, If you want damage play Need for Speed. Gran Turismo doesnt need damage, a bit of paint and slight dints is fine but i know that when i play this game the damage is going to be off for me.

@seb: The IGN review of the TGS demo said that normal cars will only take superficial damage whilst the racing cars will crumple and deform etc. However, all cars suffer mechanical damage, slower acceleration, slower steering etc etc.

  18. FiLuk

    • 11:38am BST - September 28th, 2009

That's only damage to the paint work, there's no body damage crashes like that would cause a whole lot of damage.

I wouldn't be surprised if all the ferraris only took superficial damage.

At people complaining about damage, you guys do know that it affects performance right? If all you are whining about are the looks then play burnout or motorstorm, because GT will never revolve around damage.

  22. GunTeng

    • 12:10pm BST - September 28th, 2009

Having damage to performance/handling is more than enough for GT.

If people want to visually destroy their cars, go play NeedForSpeed or some other arcade game.

It looks well enough...the performance damage is what matters more in a game like this....so if that is good, everything will be good as far as Im concerned.

than we cant call GT5 a "real driving simulator experience" can we?

  24. PSX_Legend | KillZone3000

    • 1:03pm BST - September 28th, 2009

@24 if you call that driving... lol but seriously i know what you meen but you must understand that this level of damage is already pretty visually aceptable and thats a great achivement on GT5 cause we all know that the Gran Turismo is a high class videogame and probably the most lisenced to date.

the real point of Gran Turismo is simulating the driving as realistic as possible and not simulate crashes.

Damage to car seems minimum considering the smack into walls. Also, are those concrete blocks that the car keeps hitting. They seem to be flying around like paper.

    @24

Do you seriously want to debate about how realistic GT is, how much it could be, and how much fun that would be?

There has to be a level of balance or a main focus. Most games that try to be jack of all trades, end up suffering in one aspect or another. I would rather that they focus on racing as usual and keep damage as a performance modifier.

A visual thrill is a superficial and shallow point to harp on. I would be more concerned about the punishment of raming into other cars and walls to prevent people from cheating.

I don't care if there is visual damage or not. I have other games that can satisfy my needs, when I feel like watching things break.

ok wow dude smashed into a wall doing what 50? and he breaks a light? guess what now im not gonna buy this game, im sick of the fake games that lost what most games are supossed to be about, realisem! go buy a copy of MW2 and play our 3 year old games with all the other ADD havn people who play games. also all these faqs who dont want damage are the same people who ride the wall around tunrs and are the ones cheating on other games, buying those modded controllers. you all suck really all of you who dont want damage on a game that claims to be realistic. and then that one guy whos like go play an arcade game! well we dont want to play the fake arcade games we want the realistic game. thats what games should be geared, not to please the ADD playing childern who cant sit still for 5 mins.

i think they should show smashed fenders smoke and if continuously smashed engine failure if i were making the game id love to have a total your car feature wich can be disabled through options i mean going that fast a car would crumble and in simulation racing games that adds the realism plus watching what seem to be concrete dividers just flying over the roof that looks unrealistic im still stoked about the game and will buy it but i expect more from a racing sim

    • 4:23pm BST - September 28th, 2009

I really hope there is a real on/off damage feature available because if going 60mph into a wall and driving off again is very dumb.

Can you imagine this as an online multiplayer racer where a bunch of noobs dont ever use the brakes or know how to properly maneuver a racing vehicle would just ruin the game for thoes who do know how to race?

    • 4:36pm BST - September 28th, 2009

It's "real DRIVING simulator" not "real CRASHING simulator" You want to wreck a car go play Burnout Paradise.

Keep in mind that many companies may only allow a certain amount of damage to their cars. Scratches and bruises to the paint job is one thing, but all out wrecking a fender is another thing. In the Major company cars like Ferrari and Toyota they may only get scratched, but the off brand modified cars like the way they had a Nismo branded "Porche" that allowed them to get around not having a Porche licensed car. These types will probably get big damage, as well as the NASCAR vehicles that arnt actually real cars.

Thought pd had already stated there are currently two levels of damgage Race cars etc. Scatches full deformstion doors come off etc. Plus performance and handling. Showroom cars Scrathes light damage and performance and handling damage. Think in one of the gt threads in the forums. Seems like the manafactures are saying no.

Kind of seems tacked on at the moment.  Hopefully they work on it a little.  My major problem lies in how the car just seems to bounce off of walls, that was always something I found odd about Gran Turismo.  I don't need realistic car damage but driving head first into a wall going 90 mph should have a little more effect than bouncing your car back in the right direction. Just my thoughts.

Are we still on the PS2 hear? come on man those are just scratches. I wont to see real time damage the likes of which is on Grid or GTA4. This realy is a disapointment. If they cant do damage corectly then dont do it at all. Looks like Ill be taking another look at Forza with its 2nd rate graphics.

  41. iceveiled

    • 6:50pm BST - September 28th, 2009

it looks like the texture changed but the actual car geometry stayed the same. If this is the "damage modelling" that caused the delay then that's pretty weak.

I really could care less about damage modelling.  The only games that should have realistic damage modelling that actually effects the performance of the cars are rally racing games.

do you have to pay to have it repaired?  or does the damage go away when you restart or leave that particular race and come back to it with the same car?

  43. masonmcglasson

    • 7:48pm BST - September 28th, 2009

The car damage sucks.  Wish it was actually realistic.  This is where Forza 3 is going to be a lot better as well as car (external) customization.

I dont know what you guys were expecting.  PD repeatedly said what the damage would be like and why.  I don't understand what's with you guys and "realistic" damage.  Does Forza even have realistic damage?  For instance when a crash calls for catastrophic damage on a vehicle...does it? Or does a bumper fall off and that's somehow the same as "realistic".  Mind as well not have damage at all ;)

Many of these people crying and whining about damage even play Gran Turismo

They don't have Logitech wheels.  They (much like COD4 fans talking about MAG), just think that since an arcade-y game like Burnout or Grid or Dirt has spectacular crashes, that GT should as well.  They know nothing about racing, and don't realize that real life GT racing doesn't even have the spectacular crashes of something like NASCAR.  They no nothing of the spirit of the sport and wasn't going to get the game anyway.  To me, these non-driving fans are doing the equivalent of complaining about Madden football, when they don't even play it (they do that as well).

Not only that, BUT IF THEY DAMAGE THEY WANTED WAS IN THE GAME, THEN IT WOULD BE TOO HARD FOR THEM TO PLAY.  Part of GT is trial and error trying to shave second off your time.  Hav eyou play Prolouge online?  They don't race like GT racers.  The race like it's Burnout, crashing into others and driving the course against traffic.  If you could lose your cars by damaging them, they would have a fit.  The FACT that they never thought that far shows me the they either 1) Never played GT or 2) had no intention of getting this game (or both).
