Codemasters gains Formula One license

Posted on May 10th, 2008 at 10:41 EDT

With Sony no longer wishing to develop their Formula One franchise, the licensing for the sport was put up for grabs. According to a press release sent out by Codemasters, this gave them the opportunity to swoop in and make the deal happen which has resulted in them adding yet another racing franchise under their companies list of many. The creators of Toca, DiRT and the upcoming title, GRiD, are preparing to release their first installment of the Formula One racing series some time in 2009.

It's been commonly agreed upon that SCEE had done a fantastic job with the sport in representing it within videogame form and a lot of gamers are concerned with the fact that Codemasters may not be able to continue that tradition. Though they do have a decent track record when it comes to the sport of racing, it seems we'll have to wait a respectable amount of time to see if they can pull off a simulation-heavy franchise like Formula One.  If anything else is released in regards to this title, we'll keep you up to date.

Codemasters isn't very good at simulators. I think that it will be more of a rental than a buy.

What simulators have Codemasters done before now?

They've got a lot of car game experience which has to offer them some credit.

But saying that, I've tried to play the grid demo a few times now and really don't like it. The driving model is very unrealistic and leaves you and your vehicle feeling detached from the race track.

DiRT was much more of a sim than GRiD. It wasn't a full sim, but it straddled the line between sim and arcade title.

psn id: gingo.... it will be a shame to see formula one games change hands because SCEE always made a good job of them but i'm sure codemasters will make some improvements, at least they have experience in racing games

Toca race race driver style F1 Championship Racing and you say Codemasters aren't good at racing simulators. Heck at least EA didn't get the F1 licence

I'm GLAD EA didn't get the licence.   Codemasters needs to hit an Absolute HOME RUN to gain the respect of the Racin Sim community

At least EA did not pick it up. That would have been a disaster.

I really hope the Codemasters team see what has gone before them in the form of Formula 1 Racing games and build on that. I am definately looking forward to how they use their damage engine with Formula 1 cars as one thing real life Formula 1's provide are insane crashes(kubica, canada last year).  The handling in the game will be my biggest worry , I just hope they realise they need to go back to the drawing board and make a completly different handling system to what they use in their lastest games. I am however looking forward to see what multiplayer is like as the net code for F1:CE was horrible,

Oh man why didn't Sony keep making this game!  Oh well I think this means the game may go multi-platform now, or Sony can maybe keep it Playstation 3 exclusive... But it wouldn't be as good as, if they made it:(

Excellent, I always thought Sony made a hash of sims, thank god Codemasters got the franchise, TOCA 1&2 were the best sims for PSX, it was the realistic handling that the console community complained about (hence popularity of GT).  Subsequent efforts on the PS2 &3 were more arcady, I hope they don't compromise (like SCEE did) on F1, I have still got to see an F1 sim as realistic as the old  Microprose Geoff Crammond .series.
