Codemasters has confirmed that a sequel to its hit off-road racer Colin McRae Rally will be kicking up dirt on PlayStation 3, PlayStation Portable, Xbox 360, Wii and DS in 2009.

The sequel marks the first entry in the series following McRae’s tragic death in 2007, with Codemasters pledging that the game will honour the life of the legendary rally driver.

“Colin McRae was all about the speed, the excitement and the entertainment of rally driving,” said Codemasters’ Gavin Raeburn.

“Even when we first worked with him over ten years ago, he captured a freedom and a spirit that enthralled rally fans. Later his showmanship shone through in events such as the X-games, the Dakar Rally and the Race of Champions. He could do things with a car that no one else would and that’s where we’re taking the series with new events at the extreme edge of rally and autosport. It will be a great tribute to an incredible champion.”

Powered by the third generation of EGO Engine’s racing game technology, Colin McRae Rally: DiRT 2 incorporates both multi and solo off-road racing across a series of real-world environments and stadium based events.

Stay tuned for more information as it becomes available.

    Sweet! I have been waiting for this to be announced. It's funny because this is codemasters 4th title in the same timeframe it took polyphony digital to complete a demo of GT5! Not to mention all of their games have been multi-platform! Dirt and Grid are both pretty solid titles.

    @4. you cant compair grid and dirt to gt5p. gt5p isnt a demo the p stands for "prologue". like gt4p... plus it takes time to make a top quality game that has long standing relevance. ie i dont see any people on my friends list playing dirt or grid but many still playing gt5p including me. i find it wierd they would use colin mcrae. dont get me wrong he was a good driver and all but hes dead. theres other rally car drivers out there.

    Yeah, I was being sarcastic about prologue being a demo, but in reality that's what it is! Maybe an extended demo. I really hope they can fix the online portion of gt5 before they launch it in 2020 :) I guess After playing GTR evolution I lost a little respect for the Gran turismo franchise.  However, there really aren't too many other "sim" racers on consoles, so it's great in that respect.  I just don't think the time it's taking them to make it is a reflection of the quality of the title.

    @8 GT5 is coming soon

    "Kazunori laughed at the notion of a 2010 release date for Gran Turismo 5, and said it will be released sooner than expected."

    I love the GT franchise but even if it's the most realistic driving simulation that exist it has 2 majors fails, 1 no realistic real time damage and 2 very poor AI. The cars are simply programmed to take the best tragectories and aren't capable in avoiding absticles! Hope things will be different for gt5!
