Console owners use PS3 to browse web more than Wii

Data from business statistics group Market Share has revealed that Sony’s PlayStation 3 console is more widely used for browsing the web by console owners than Nintendo Wii.

Figures show that PS3 Internet usage occupies approximately 0.04 percent of the ‘Internet market’, while the Wii takes home a paltry 0.01 percent. Unsurprisingly, the PC wipes the floor with the competition at a mammoth 88.7 percent.

Although the difference between the PS3 and Wii’s Internet usage is minimal at best, these numbers are perhaps more interesting when you consider the install base of both machine’s, with the Wii’s userbase estimated at being more than double that of Sony’s black box.

It is quite sad that ps3 users prefer using it as browser when wii users are too busy playing games :) This is very stupid statistic but lack of games was a problem to ps3 not so long ago. Now there is so much games and i have so little time.

I have never surfed the net on my wii in the year I've had it.  For that matter I don't sure the web on my PS3 much either.  My computer is faster, easier to use and is set up more specifically for the internet.  I guess there is little in the way of news...

Yeah, I gotta admit...it's articles like this that make me think we're just reaching for a PS3 win ANYWHERE...

i dont understand why this is here well of course they do because its fun to play the games and most real hardcore console owners know there is the browser and people that own the wii just use it as a party piece rather than a browser

The reason why people prefer using the PS3 for web browsing more over the Wii is because its free, i think you have to pay 500 wii points (which equals $5) to purchase the internet channel to surf the web on the wii. Why purchase something that should come free, thus the over abundance of PS3 peeps surfing the web on their console over Wii owners.

Both browsers suck. PC browsing is the way to go for now. So does console codec support.

I just wish I could hook up my PC to my HDTV because I have to watch my HD anime/movies/TV on my crappy SD laptop screen when I have a tempting HDTV right beside me.

I'd go online on the ps3 if my brother is using the laptop and vice versa, while my nephew has internet now on the wii so atleast he can surf now without downloading viruses :).

I would usually go on to watch some movies or show online (hate watching movies on the laptop) its great when the site works, but I agree that it is WAY OFF compared to internet browsing,

@MMDs-   The internet channel was initally free for the Nintendo wii, they brought in the charge last summer I think..

This has to be the sadest news article proclaiming a PS3 win.

What's next?   More PS3 owners watch blu-ray movies on their consoles than Wii owners?

When I had the PS3 hooked up in the living room I would sometimes surf the web there instead of going to my room and starting up my PC.  Now it's sitting right next to my PC hooked up to my 26" montior/TV, so I just use the Firefox on by PC.  An actual mouse and keyboard is a lot easier for browsing the net anyway.  I wanna know how much time and money was wasted on Life with Playstation.  Does anybody use that for news, or weather?    Nothing beats iGoogle as your home page.  Just customize and add any widget you want and you got the latest on any news, weather, blog update, etc.  I can't believe people actually still pay for newspapers.

True, another reason could be because most people who own the Wii don't even know or care that it can surf the web.

Why the heck would they bring in the charge? anyway.

Who cares the PS3 browser is a joke, not enough memory to handle some webpages, plugins are outdated or non-existant.

also lets not forget, you have to PURCHASE the Wiis Opera based browser, while the PS3 just comes with its own for free, and has seen drastic improvements as of late with a better flash impementation and better memory allocation

I watch most my mma fights online (not live ones)..... since my PS3 is hooked up to my TV.... its quick and simple... also when we are all at my cousins, we use the PS3, hooked up to his 73" to watch youtube clips or recommend fine arsre myspace or facebook broads.....  the PS3 browser is not the best...but it does a fine job and can only get better....

@ 1 and all the other people who don't have or understand the PS3.

It's called Folding at Home, which is web based not part of the PSN (this will register as internet browsings by the overall marketing trackers, which is what this artical is talking about). The PS3 is working with Stanford University to help find cures for things like cancer. The 360 can't do it b/c you have to leave it on for hours and the 360 withh overheat and RRoD. The Wii can't do it b/c it not powerful enough. Again it's participation of PS3 owners with Stanford University Folding project. Look it up! I do it at least one a week. If you are a PS3 owner you should too.

One reason why that is, is because that most of the wii owners are little kids and casual gamers. thet are not intersted in these extra features ,but the ps3 on the other hand is made up of more of a hardcore gamer audience which is why this has occured

    • 4:57pm GMT - January 5th, 2009

Duh... PS3 owners are more often net-savvy adults, while Wii owners are either little kids or Soccer moms... If the 360 had a browser, it'd be used the most, but it doesn't...

What I use my PS3 browser for is streaming video on a TV, since my old video card died on my computer that let me do that a LOT more effectively.

I use the PS3 browser to watch flash videos on sites like Youtube and that. I wouldn't use it for any more than that though. The PS3 browser is pretty horrible due to its slow page loading times and problems displaying some websites correctly. It just makes more sense to grab my laptop if I need anything.

@9 and the rest of the posters, i agree.  I have a Wii too, BUT theres one thing that wasnt mentioned in the article, PS3 Browser is FREE, wii well you have to pay for it, yep for those who have a wii. fire it up and browse the "shopping channel" theres an option to BUY the browser, something like £14 i think, i mean who the hel* pays for a browser on a console ?, i bet even Microsoft would offer Internet Explorer for FREE on their 360, ofcourse i use my PS3 for the odd quick page if my PC is switched off, but come on Nintendo chargin to browse the net on a wii, pff, saddest thing ive heard of all year

Browsing in 480p vs 1080p.  Yea... big difference.  Not to mention the updated flash version on PS3.

i use my ps3 to 'surf' lol the internet all the time. it works fine for most things, can do banking check mail and so on. its great for you tube and other video sites especially with the flash update. some websites are even optimised for the ps3 like g4tv.com/ps3. i do however find it hilarious that this website psu.com runs horribly on the ps3 browser. you would figure since its all about the ps3 that whoever runs the site might have that in mind but there probably too busy censoring people. lol
