Crytek CEO and President Cevat Yerli has estimated that successors to Sony’s PlayStation 3 and Microsoft’s Xbox 360 will arrive on the market between 2011 – 2012.
Speaking during a keynote session at the GC Developer Conference in Leipzig, Germany this week, Yerli commented, "The PlayStation 4 and Xbox '720' will arrive in 2011 or 2012, we think," he stated.
"But this is just our estimate - we don't know, and even if Microsoft and Sony told us, I couldn't say because it would be under NDA.
"But we think in three to four years' time, although there are good reasons why it should be 2010 already...but we'll see."
Regardless as to when the next generation of consoles will arrive, Sony has reiterated on several occasions that it is committed to supporting the PS3 for a life cycle of roughly ten years.

Could be a likely year for a new console, might be a bit later though.

I say the longer the better. I know it's very exciting to get our hands on the lastest tech but honestly new systems suck too. High price with next to no games at launch. You have to wait atleast 2-3 years just to get decent games. This round I say the longer PS3/360 goes the better. Just think of all the AAA titles that will be available when the new systems are on the horizon. I think I'm more excited by year 4-5 of PS3/360 than the release of the latest system.

I agree with melmacj. I am more excited about what the PS3 will become than I am of what the PS4 will be. I still want more out of my PS3, that's why I even choosed Sony to begin with. Because I prefer to have one system that will grow and enhance under a long period of time than having to buy a new system ever three-or-four years. I mean, where did the original Xbox go? It's useless today. So will probably the 360 be in a few years.

you will probably get more out of the PS3 in a few years time than you would a new PS4 or Xbox.

2012 sounds about right....even though Sony says it will support the PS3 until 2015, that doesn't mean they won't release another console before that time....or at least leak out some info about one. Look at what's going on right now, even though the PS3 is on the market there is still strong support for the PS2

microsoft cant release another console yet until they get copyright agreement from sony to use a bluray drive so unless the next xbox is not using blu ray which would be a massive mistake, microsoft will have to wait till sony are ready to release there console first.

The PS4 (that being an entire new hardware model) will NOT be available in 2011-2012. And you can put money against me on that.
Sony have re-itterated on several occasions that the PS3 has a ten year life cycle, as with the PS2.
It will only be attaining it's true market penetration in another two to three years, so why dilute that share by fracturing your market dominance with another product.
Nonsense.
What you may well see is a re-branded PS3 with some ugrading or both the componentry and external packaging (remember how big the original PS2 was). Things they may consider upping would be hardware interfaces that could be considered out-of-date. Sony has always pushed the envelope with the playstation series (first console to support CDROM and first to support DVD). There's plenty of new gadgetry coming through the pipeline they may want to work with - USB3, Extended HDMI. And hand in hand with these could be a boost to hard disk size - with the imminent TV tuner/recorder, a 1GB PS3 focused at media would be a good offer.
I wouldn't be surpised if Microsoft produced a new Xbox, the weak hardware model is crippling it in the market, and releasing a new (intermediate) product could help them stem the loss of customers. Bumping up the graphics processor and core would allow it to tout itself as "better than a ps3", while a new product could introduce BluRay and by-default hard disk support, without having to eat humble pie and backtrack on the 360.
Anyway, that's a long way off, and there's a global recession to deal with first...

B******t. Microsoft have never claimed that their next machine will even be called the 720, it's a simple assumption.
Same with Playstation!!! 4 is an unlucky number to the Japanese, if I remember correctly, so I HIGHLY DOUBT they'll call their next machine after this! Expect a whole different name. Or a remake of the PSX (Only available in Japanese regions, totaly ahead of it's time! Google it.)
This "news" item just seems like sheer crap water to me!

Bull Sony decides when to put out their new systems and they will tell us at the appropriate time. The PS2 is still kicking a@#. The PS3 which is superior to the PS2 will be here for a longtime. PS4 might not even come out till 2015. Regardless of M$ putting out a new system. it will cost too much anyway and the PS3 will be crunching awesome graphics at that time so we might not even care fro extra polygons. Who knows maybe Sony proves me wrong but the PS3 has great potential a over a very longtime compared to its rival the 360.

I think that Sony or even Microsoft, if they put out a new system in less then 5 years they both would be crazy, well, microsoft might need to put on out tomorrow because the 360 is a poor system. But back on topic, I don't feel that I've gotting even half of my money back yet from my system. Even with the line up of games and stuff coming out this year, the games will really start rolling around the end of 09 going to 2010. So we still have plenty of time to do it big with the ps3 and alot more power to push out.

@bent_toe totally agree, this guy is obviously talking cr@p. Starting to wonder why he even made such a statement and then threw in "we don't know" and "estimate" and "i couldn't say", if you can't say then shut the F up.
2011 is way too early, perhaps talks of a PS4 sufacing around 2014 and actual release a couple years later. Remember the delays the PS3 had?

@halfofzero number 4 (she) is also the word for death so you could be right and it seems boring and predictable to keep changing the number but what else would you call it apart from 4 5 6 etc. This guys been on youtube too much, and Sony wouldn't make a new console until 2015 - 17 maybe a psp 2 will be out in 2013. I defiantly think a new xbox will be out within the next 3 years though cause the last one only lasted 4 years

Everyone here knows (or should, by now) that Sony overlaps their cycles, so all this talk about them not even thinking about a PS4 until 20XX is utter nonsense. Their 10 year support does not mean not releasing future products. You can bet you last dollar they're behind closed doors right now discussing their next console. You would be naïve to think otherwise.

In the PS2's lifespan there was a new console one that would be bashed at the media for being truely next Gen. So this Console's lifespan there will be a redesign and the next Console that will define gaming

To #3, they've already lost so much money because of their crappy productin standards with the 360 and they're still having to repair their flawed design, I highly doubt that their solution is to drop billions of dollars on research and development of a more highly sophisticated and complicated gaming machine when they can't even get their current design right. If you can barely handle a creek don't go fish in the ocean. Sony made the right decision in waiting a year and working out almost all the bugs, microsoft on the other hand is only about money and would have given up 100% defective systems if it meant getting out there first and winning the next-gen console war. They don't care about quality or the happiness of a gamer. they only care about $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. I own both systems. I only own 360 for halo, but other than that I actually think the 360 is actually a pretty crappy piece of hardware. It freezes constantly and overheats quite easily. I feel a lot more confident with my PS3. Long story short, M$ is a very long way away from being ready for another system. They weren't ready when they released the first XBOX and now they've made the same mistake and have already lost their one year lead to nintendo and their lead over sony is slipping away. M$ should really take the next generation of consoles off to refine their techniques and then come back in like 12-15 years with something that will actually last 6 months and be a bit innovative. I love Halo 3, but without it, I'd have absolutely no reason to own a 360. Microsoft has made a lot of mistakes this time around just like they did before, and they're just no ready for another consol. Let alone in 2-4 years.

@lurkingshadow89 You moron, you're the one who doesn't know much about the PS3. The 10 year lifecycle refers to how long the PS3 will be supported by Sony, not how long it will be until the next PS. You know kind of like how right now Sony is supporting the PS2 and PS3. It will be the same thing with PS4 and PS3. The PS2 is also on a 10 year life cycle but alas we already have a PS3. Know what you're talking about before you speak.
On a side note 2012 is my guess and I would be fine with that.

smallvillefreak AGREED,All Microsoft cares about is the damn $$$ MONEY $$$.they dont actually care about us gamers. Their live service is not free and all they want is the money unlike Sony they dont care about us and they just wanna win the war of the next generation gaming console and lose it pathetically to others over time. Sony on the other hand develops high quality (defectless) products which are worth buying and they promote their gaming consoles cuz they actually develop record breaking games like GOW I and II.

I bet money that both Sony and MS are working behind closed doors on their next systems. MS has to do somethign and will probaly have their next system out by 2010 holiday season. Sony probally won't have theirs out for a couple years later, which is fine with me because we've only begun to see what the PS3 is capable of.

I just dont understand some people in here. What makes you think that Sony will wait a full 10 years to release another PS console? The PS2 will be starting its 10th year this november. And yet, the PS3 has been released for two years now. The PS2 came out 5 years after the PS1 did. The PS3 came out 6 years after the PS2 did. So what would be so wrong if the PS4 came out in 2012, which is 6 years after the PS3 was released??? History repeats itself.

This story is thigh slappin' funny to even think that the next gen systems will release in 3 yrs time. I think Sony and/or MS would've been setting up their positions already for a release that close. I believe the PS3 was being whispered about, I don't know, 3 years before it came out. So in order for that prediction to occur we would be hearing them about now. MS is in tough spot cuz if they release early again people will get stung again like they were with Xbox 1 and the RROD issue will be to fresh in their mind and it will be a brand new system which means half done launch titles, you name it.

with big titles going mulitplatform, i think M$ should join sony, sony makes the hardware and some software and M$ concentrates on the software devolopment. why should they join cause it always happens when theres 3 on the market and since nintendo is woopin both our butts,a joint venture would cripple them.

I completely disagree, I know the 'X720' will be out way before then considering sales are decreasing each year and the games will look very poor compared to what the PS3 will have then and Playstation consoles are out 7 years before they release the next one.

One piece of advice to Crytek CEO: "Don't open your mouth until you know what the shot is!"
I personally believe that in two years time we will see the Golden Age of PS3, where developers will unleash the true potential of the Cell. Coupled with minor upgrades and functions, the PS3 will rule the entertainment for years to come.
As for Microsoft's role in this, who cares? (lol) Just joking. Whatever they do with a new console, it will push the industry to new competitive levels, and that is a good thing.
