Curious job listing appears on SCEJ's website

According to website Gamefront.de, Sony Computer Entertainment Japan (SCEJ) has posted a job advertisement on its website requesting the aid of a software engineer to deal with backwards compatibility for PlayStation 3 and "next-generation consoles".
The job posting specifies that the candidate would be tasked with the integration and optimisation of emulation software for Psone, PS2, PS3 and PSP software for both machines.
Internet speculation has already reached fever pitch, with many believing that the unnamed next-gen console(s) is that of a successor to PS3, which Sony is currently planning on making compatible with software from past consoles.
Alternatively, it could mean that the company is looking to improve the backwards compatibility of existing PS3 models, especially given the fact the 40GB system is severly lacking in this area compared to earlier models. The fact that PSP software is listed on the website is quite intriguing, however.
Despite this, we advise our readers to treat this as wishful conjecture for the time being, at least until we hear more on the situation.
Stay tuned for any further developments as we get them.

I doubt very much it has anything to do with a PS4 console.
Maybe a PSP2?
A few months after the playstation 2 came out, there where talks of a PS3 in the works then, but look how long it took them to release it. This is just speculation. I wouldn't read too much into it.

with all the killer games coming to ps3 and all the money sony lost in production of the console (which is going to take some time to get back), sony is gonna wait a while before starting on the next generation, but on the other hand they've donne such a good job on ps3 it's gonna take them alot of work to make the next console better, if it's possible

I wouldn't be surprise because these people will never stop by creating consoles until the end of the world when JESUS comes. Instead of think to create ps4, Sony dam should think how to make ps3 more active with games, providing more services for the network, releasing more games and etc. And if they will create ps4, it has be compeletly something new and have technology a head about 4 years which 2017 not putting the techology of 10 years ago, by calling it MOTION SENSER. But i dont no i just love Sony stuff man even if they are bad loool

Nothing special here.. it is normal that development starts 3-5 years before a product launch. If you take Nokia they start development of a cell phone approx. 4 years before launch. After launch it takes 6-8 month for the phone to go into production. So from the first steps it takes 4-5 years to develop a cell phone. For a console i will guess that from the first steps to the product is ready u have to use a minimum of 5 years.

Yeah, just like MrAce said,"don't look to into it" everyone knows there is going to be a PS4. Everyone knows that it will once again actually be Nex-Gen, but I bet u any money that Sony doesn't even know how long it will take for them to be ready with the PS4. Ideas and thoughts for the PS4,5,6 are one thing. Doesn't mean that they are even near the point to makeing the dream a reality.

Whenever the next-generation PlayStation is ready, I don't think they'll call it "PS4"!!! It just doesn't have a catch to it! Nonetheless, we won't be seeing another generation of PlayStation consoles until 5-7 years time!
Like they say...PS3 is FutureLoveSex proof!!! ;-)

I don't see why this can't be the ps4. Nows as good a time as any. Why design a console in three years and rush it, when you could start now and take your time to make sure everything is right. I mean Sony have a lot of work to do with the ps4, as the ps3 sales haven't exactly gone to plan. As much as I hate to admit it I can't see the ps3 beating the 360. I can see it catching up and trailing closely behind, but not overtaking the 360. I hope it does but I dunno. So why not start early and make sure everything is right, without delays.

Well duh!
How long do people think it takes to design a bleeding edge console.
If it's going to contain next gen components now is the time to start.
File this one under stating the bleeding obvious and go back to sleep.
At least we didn't get one of those lame "Woo first to post things". Teenagers eh!

the ps3 is going down quicker than a 10doller hooker, apart from the silly fanboys who would back the ps3 even if it set fire to there house, the general feeling has been that the ps3 has been disapointing to say the least, by the time sony have got the console up to 360 standard the 720 will not be far away, and then where will sony be? with the ten doller hooker and a ten year plan trying to get sucky sucky on tick.....

I'm surprised nobody has commented on the emulation software. This job listing suggests that Sony is working on bringing full BC to all PS3 models. This is huge for all the 40GB adopters. Maybe they're going to have PS2 games at the PSS sooner than we think?

I'm sure the posting would be to help BC the exsisting PS3 while developing a solution for its successor.
Hope they find somone! BC isn't a HUGE deal to me but if for some reason my PS2 dies, I'm not overley keen on buying a new one.

A job opening? Ever think someone may have quit? Everyone's jumping over the idea of a PS4 like rednecks at a Walmart sale.
"...integration and optimisation of emulation software..."
So they're trying to put emulation software into something. Say, maybe something that doesn't already have it? Cough cough.

No the PS4 is not comming out already it's not schedualed for anytime closer than 2011. They've hardly had a chance to get the PS3 rolling. If anything they may be doing the planning, I mean Kutaragi left detailed plans for future Playstation technology ideas and implementations so I'm sure they have some idea where they're headed but they're not going to be going there anytime soon. Besides they hired people for jobs like this in the past, During the PS2 era they hired a bunch of Emmulator programers to work on PS3's backwards compatibility.
As for the PSP software thing. H3LLO, PSP plays PSone games! You know the ones downloadable from the store? It's not like they're going to start letting us downlaod PSP titles for the PS3. Well okay they might but not this soon when the PSP is starting to really sell.

Yes PS4 .... thinkin' about the next big thing I suppose... I'd like to hear good news about the console Ive got now.
Anyway its nice to hear atleast BC mentioned. Even if it was just in a teeny weeny job advertisement. One engineer for backward compatibility.... Wow wee! I would have thought that BC should be a bit bigger priority for them right now. I'd say a fair amount of former PS2 owners have already moved to Wii but hey Sony take your time.
Next they might get around to actually hiring a guy or two (keep your fingers crossed) to help them get Home off the ground. Imagine that. Actually having Home up and useable by people who own PS3's and have been sitting about with their thumb up their butt for the past year or maybe hire a part time Uni grad to assist with getting a game (god forbid...maybe three half decent ones) out some time before the next generation...
Suppose one engineer is a start...

BC is a big issue and although Sony got flack for it, they surely will not repeat this mistake with the PS4 early plans. I do think they will follow with their 10 year lifecycle so long as they retake the market which is good while from now if at all.

I will be really disappointed if they don't patch up the remaining ps2 bc,after this.Because that would really be awesome, being able to play your entire ps2 bc without any hiccups,or anything of that sort.
