Dan Houser on the impact of GTA IV

Posted on April 21st, 2008 at 06:14 EDT

Dan Houser, the Co-Founder and Creative Vice President of Rockstar Games, has said that he hopes the upcoming Grand Theft Auto IV will have as much of an impact on players as its predecessor, Grand Theft Auto III.

Speaking with variety, Houser commented, "What we wanted was the feeling when you saw GTA III after GTA II.”

"The feeling when [you] see IV compared to III, hopefully it's not difficult to see differences."

He also commented that, while the company is not set against the idea of taking the series into other forms of media, the firm strongly believes that the GTA brand is better in its current videogame incarnation.

“The intellectual property is the main asset in the company,” he said. “That's why 'GTA' is still relevant ten years later. We haven't put one out every year. We haven't fleeced it. And we haven't put it on 50 different formats.”

"We're not per se against moving properties between different media but for GTA it just seems so perfect as a game. You lose a lot of what makes it what it is if you move it into being, say, a movie. It just never seemed interesting creatively."

Grand Theft Auto IV is due out worldwide on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on April 29.

psn id: gingo.... it will be harder to make an impact graphically from the 3d GTA 3 to GTA 4 rather than the massive leap from 2d to 3d but hopefully gameplay wise its a lot different

Seems like the every year and 50 formats comment was aimed at what EAs practices are like. WTG Dan!

The game will no doubt be exciting on some level even for those who have never been a GTA player (whoever those maybe), but for some reason i can't get over the thought that the massive potential that this game undoubtedly had was somehow hindered when it was decided to be a multiplatform venture.. As good as the 360 is I do believe that this game could have been pushed more had it been a PS3 exclusive..but with that said, I think fans will be happy with the game and if those first time players get in on it then I think GTA will earn a few more.
