Electronic Arts has unwrapped details on an all-new downloadable hockey title for PlayStation Network and Xbox LIVE Arcade.

Developed by EA Canada, 3 on 3 NHL Arcade offers fans a more stripped down approach to the popular sport by eliminating the need for rules, affording gamers an instantly accessible, fast-paced experience.

Hockey aficionados can also look forward to some humorous caricatures of your favourite NHL stars, with the game boasting an impressive roster of 40 players to choose from.

Said EA Sports Vice President, Dave McCarthy: "Available through a simple digital download, 3 on 3 NHL Arcade is perfect for sports fans who want to experience the thrill of NHL hockey at a great value without worrying about the rules of the sport.”

The game will also support online multiplayer functionality over a single console, allowing three players to pit their skills against a competing trio from anywhere across the globe.

3 on 3 NHL Arcade is due for release in February 2009.
