Bill Gardner, CEO of Eidos, has said that Sony’s PlayStation 3 offers consumers ideal value for money due to its features as a multimedia entertainment unit, but, even following a recent price cut, feels that the system may not be suitable for mass market consumption just yet.
"Sony is a big company. They know what they are doing”, said Gardner, during an interview with Gamesindustry.biz this week. However, he added: "I don’t think [the price cut] is enough to reach the mass consumer, but I think it is enough to get it moving again, and it will move a little bit further, and they’ll need to do it again and it will move a bit further."
Despite this, Gardner noted that the consoles added functionality as a Blu-ray player offers consumers good value for money, a factor that would likely attract new buyers given the price of standard high-definition movie players. “Go buy an HD or a Blu-ray player. Go ahead. Tell me what it costs you. Then take a look at the PS3," he observed.
"I don’t think [PS3 is too expensive. I do think we’ll start to see additional people pick it up and use it, maybe not necessarily exclusively as a game player but as a Blu-ray player and a game player, and there is an advantage to that."
The 60GB unit currently retails across North America for USD 499, with an 80GB SKU is scheduled to ship in the region from August 1st.

Drop it to $299 man thats just crazy . Thats kind of like saying " Man do I ever like that porshe but $ 100,000 dollars thats just to much but drop it down to 25,000 and it would sell like crazy " Its not gonna happen. You want superior hardware with everything built right in you got to PAY THE MAN. Oh and by the way last time I checked porshe's are still being bought.
Maybe if they dropped down to $299 in a few years, it will be a must buy. Not so much now though. Yes, people will be buying that like crazy on that price tag but Sony won't see a profit for at least 4 years if that happens. PS3 is at a good price right now, I'm personally waiting for that beautiful 80 gig with moterstorm to come out.
great t o see that some people see past the big price.
ps3 at the end will conquor
Tell us something we didn't know. People always want something cheaper, regardless of how much it costs the other guy to make. The PS3 is a great deal for the money. I bought it for the games + blu-ray, my wife wanted the blu-ray. Winner in my book.
Good to hear at least someone in the industry (in a high position) thinks the PS3 is value for money. We've been saying this since day dot but all Capcom, Microsoft or EA seem to have to say about it is "too expensive!"... you look at value for money and with this price drop the PS3 is an absolute must-have for movie/game buffs.. no doubt.
We knew this; that's why I was an adopter from day 1. However, for this holidays I think Sony should have a 2 month special from mid-Nov to mid-Jan at an additional $100 less; that would sure put the PS3 on top of all consoles and more games would start moving thus generating more sales and more developers will see it's worth developing exclusive titels for Sony again. Also, friends without a PS3 will get to see the superb graphics and gameplay and jump into the wagon.
299 is dumb, plain and simple- 450 or 399 is better. i mean dude for you to say it should cost as much as a 360 or lworse less than a 360 is crazy. why would better technology cost less than it inferior counterpart. To be honest though Sony should have kept the 40gig hdd and dropped the price to 450 and it would sell like mad. It would be a better option being that you can buy a better hdd anywhere, i mean really they could have dropped it to a 20 gig hdd and then take the price down to 399. 299 is too low, that is the price of a last gen system. And why can't you compare gaming systems to high end cars. Technology is technology. Many devs and companies have already compared the PS3 to a RR or Lambo.
Now its a good value!!!! It's been a good value even at 599 you tart!
All in good time everyone. We all know that the PS3 is worth every dollar that it costs. Let's just continue to support Sony!
The Nintendo Wii is a good example and the funny thing is, they don't have many games LOL. A low price will sell systems, a high priced system with excellent games may sell systems (not the case for NEO-GEO). The technology is the PS3 is great like I said all along, BUT...it means nothing if there are no GAMES! The numbers, public, and business feedback speak for itself. I'm not a Sony hater or a 360 fanboy, just trying to keep people in touch with reality. There is no loyalty from game developers if a system is not doing well. Its all business!
On a more positive note... at least the PS3 doesn't have a 30% failure rate like the Xbox 360... BUT good games and online service has proven that many gamers will deal with Microsoft's crap. GAMES my friend, is the answer, bottom line, nothing personal. And yes, I support Sony because I highly value my past 10 years of gaming with them.
(this is funny, the $299 price wasn't even my idea LOL, just justifying Morpheus's comment)
Its the best value out there, and it just keeps getting better and much better i love my PS3.
Its a great value, I use my PS3 for everything, pictures, movies, music, games and bragging rights!
someone looking to buy a blu-ray should get a ps3 correct but the problem is alot of people want a console for gaming and like myself im got that interested in movies just the gaming side, for someone like me it is expnsive, but like i said for a multimedia system it is cheap.
psn id: gingo.... very true it isn't just a games console it's a multimedia centre and once HD comes into most peoples homes the ps3 price will be proven
Argh. I'm so sick of hearing companies come out and say what a deal the PS3 is. Anyone with some sort of mental process can see that. Lot of fuking good it really does 9 months into launch. You could care less about the console. You just want an installed fanbase for your games. Maybe Capcom will show you how it's done.
Some of you got to really get a grip and im not posting about anyone in peticular but really new technology takes time to develop and is not cheap, heck i remember when a vcr weighed like 40lbs and costs like $700 dollars or more. I understand why there is so much concern about the price and thats all the fanboys thinking "oh man if they dropped the price lower than the xbox 360 they would sell more and we would win this console war" everybody has to have some patience here and the only war everyone should really concern themselves with is the war over in iraq and afganistan. so stop your blatting and sit tight and let this new generation of ps3 all unfold. I mean really does anyone remember the ps2 how much that cost when it first came out and how the graphics have drastically change from it's debut to present. So unlike some of you I'm pumped to see how the playstation is gonna do even in a year from now. As for the comment about all the games xbox has on there current system they can have them because if your system is overheating or worse (3 rings of death ) those games dont mean crap. so in short stop comparing because it will all work out in the end.and all us ps3 owners will have the last laugh expect of course for all the people on the fence who i like to call hypocrites. Does the # 6 million sold worldwide ring a bell if thats not selling consoles then i dont know what is. All you ps3 doubters and xbots can all do a 360 and go back where you came from up bill gates butt.
They will have to drop the price to $299 if sales dont pickup. Who care about making money - Sony doesnt.
If you purchase a share at the current price of $53 the profit they make averages around $0.11 per share each year. That means that you would make your money back (allowing for 2.2% inflation) in 538 years. I mean had you invested $10,000 in shares in August 2000 those shares would be worth $2,987 today. If Sony has 2 million PS3's in stock and they loose $100 if they sell them at $599, then guess what? They loose $1.2 Billion if they dont sell them and thats how much money they have left now. So yes we can all look forward to cheaper prices sooner than later
Those talking about media centers are talking out their bums as you need a few hard drives of at least 750GB to make it worth while and you need to RAID them - meaning at least 1 disk parity and 1 disk global sparing. IE: a Media server will need around 5 or 6 drive bays. PS3 wont make a dent in the media server market. Its a game console for CS. Sony needs to drop the price and get some damned fgames out before we all die of bordom.
Nuck Yea it is. PS3 is more than worth it's value.
Heck yea it is a great value for your money, u think a 10lb system is waist, lol wait untill this super computer technology is showcased, u will believe
