Enterbrain: FFXIII will help sell half-million PS3s in Japan

Hirokazu Hamamura, president of Famitsu publisher Enterbrain, told reporters earlier today that he expects the PlayStation 3 to sell about 500,000 units by the end of the year, largely because of the popularity of Final Fantasy XIII and the new lower price of the PS3. With the recent price drop, the PS3 has sold more than 150,000 units in Japan during the first week of September.
If Sony is able to push 500,000 units, it would represent 15% of the 3.28 million current PS3 units. The release of FFXIII on December 17 in Japan will be huge for Sony, and the special hardware bundles that combine both the new PS3 and the game will likely have a large impact on sales.
Finally, sales analysts are indicating that the PS3 could reach the 4.5 million mark by the end of the year, and 5 million by the end of the fiscal year.

It was obvious that it would, and only half a million? Pah, it will sell more than that.

It's been the most anticipated game in Japan for over a year now even more so then Dragon Quest IX so there is a big chance the PS3 could pull those kinda numbers in December,
Japanese gamers (and us) have had to wait over 5 years now for the next numbered FF game so I think it's pretty much a given that this game is more anticipated then FFX was on the PS2 since that released a year or so after FFIX.
Software sales wise I think the game COULD reach FF8 numbers in Japan which was 2.5 million in 4 days.

5 million units before end of FY '09? Nice.
Heck, I expect the release of FF XIII will help sell a whole bunch of PS3's in the states too.

Overrated in my opinion.
I am, however, glad to see that there are people out there that appreciate such games, so much in fact that the release of a single game in an entire series is enough to encourage half a million hardware sales. It's great to see that there's a nation that's so supportive of the PS3.
Regardless, I still think this game isn't as good as it's given credit for.
I do, however, hope that those that do intend to buy into it, especially those that are amongst the half a million preople that buy a PS3 just for this game, do have a great time playing it. It's an amazing console, and it's great to see people investing in the best next-gen entertainment system, no matter what the reason.

Exclusive to PS3 in Japan and outside of Japan it should have a much larger impact on the PS3 for several reasons.
Many people purchased a PS3 for the FF series before it went multi
So far sales show JRPG's + 360 = Fail (so far anyway)
FF fans looking to buy a a PS3 or 360 for this game would go with the PS3 hands down (14 timed exclusive and Versus exclusive)
PS3 version superior (1 disc against whats now been hinted at 4 discs for the 360)
PS3 version is the lead build and from what we have seen and been told by journalists the game is running smoothly. 360 version COULD have some problems since it's a port but I guess we will have to wait until they reveal more then 2 mins worth of footage from the 360 version.

Would absolutely LOVE it if the 360 version came out with 4 disk butttt i doubt they'll let that happen. I can't recall who's doing the port for the 360 but they'll probably want to keep the game on 1 disk. We're assuming that won't happen so more likely than not it will be on 2 disks maximum. Anything more than that and the game case will have to be bigger , which is aesthetically a turn off. Not to mention costing more -

How would you know how good the game is, if it isn't out yet?

Sony will make the sales they are expecting in the long run, however I dont think it will happen as quick as they've theorized especially if game as an expensive launch price....This is a game surely heading for platinum status so I will see if I have the willpower to wait out for that red box...

I think Sony set things up nicely for this holiday season. One, they've got the price drop... which is already proving a huge sucess and two with FFXIII in Japan.... I can see 500k being... not much of a stretch at all. Infact I bet you that it'll be over 500k.
Maybe now us RPG starved PS3 owners will start getting some new games... if FFXIII does well on the system.

I would not dismiss Mr. Hamamura's estimates as "a wild guess" but I am inclined to dismiss those who throw around such unsubstantiated remarks as "wild". I hope that makes sense.
If anything, his estimate is conservative. As the article indicates sales analysts predict a much higher number of units sold, 1.22 million to be precise (4.5 - 3.28).
FFXIII is a very important game for the PS3 in Japan and the track record of past releases lends credibility to the aforemention sales forecasts. If there is scepticism, I must ask, what is it based on? Pure cynicism and a disregard for the turth, I gather.
Anyway, the PS3 has turned a corner at last and the best is yet to come.

Don't forget the PS3 will have both the Japanese and English voice cast. The 360 will only have the English voice cast. So that's already one way they reduce the amount of data for the 360.

I was referring to the franchise as a whole. In my opinion, the whole IP is overrated, and not as good as it's given credit for (the same applies to Metal Gear Solid), therefore I can't see how this one will differ. I'm not saying it will be bad, I'm just not interested in it. That's not to say I won't try it; I just don't intend to buy it unless I'm persuaded otherwise that this game's for me. Sorry for any confusion/interpreted arrogance.
