During the DKS3713 event yesterday, Square Enix director Motomu Toriyama revealed that the US and European versions of Final Fantasy XIII will be held back on the PlayStation 3 due to development of the Xbox 360 version.

In a behind the scenes video produced by Square Enix's Tetsuya Nomura, Toriyama reconfirmed the development plans for Final Fantasy XIII.

"We haven't changed the direction of the development," said Toriyama. "We're making the PS3 version first, and then porting to the 360 later."

With the PS3 version complete and hitting Japan in 2009, PS3 gamers in the United States and Europe will have to wait until the Xbox 360 port is done. According to Nomura, his team didn't receive Xbox 360 development kits until a few days ago, so depending on how long it takes the Square Enix team to port the title, the U.S. and Europe may not receive Final Fantasy XIII until 2010.

As his final comment, Noruma stated that the PS3 version will not suffer due to the Xbox 360 development.

"We aren't going to change any specifications because of the multi-platform announcement," he said. "Right now, we're fully concentrating on the PS3 version."

Still no mention on how many DVDs they will need on the 360.  They might as well make it a HDD mandatory game.  It's not the first time they managed to get the agreement from Microsoft to release a HDD mandatory game on the 360 (remember Final Fantasy 11).

I wonder how long the game will be delayed due to technical difficulties on splitting the content among multiple discs.  Either the game is designed around linear events (ala FF7) which makes it easy or they will have to decide to use either a mandatory install for the core files and only stream movies and non-common textures or having the gamer swap a lot between discs.

I hate sell outs! This is really BS, and as others has mentioned, WHY don't Square Enix hold back the 360 version of The Last Remnant while doing this to FF XIII. I WILL NOT buy this game, and i really hope everybody out there who really wants this game will do the same thing. Well, maybe I'll be left out on this one game, but I will NOT give my money to a company with this little loyalty who's taking a dump on their true fans!! SE can go to  h e l l , and take MS with them. and then they can shove all their shi**y games up their moneyhungry buttholes!!! Everything that is happening.. My interest for gaming is really fainting here, and it's all because of that dirty MS money... I'm really angry atm, because i'm watching the industry I love dying and I really can't do anything to stop it... It's just lousy...

and just one last thing. to all of you who do not see the point in not buying the game because of this it's about respect. Respect for those who made SE what SE are today. Those who have shown support and been giving SE their money year after year. Yeah that's right, it's about respect for your fans. And then to treat their fans like this, because of money. That's the whole thing. And if you like people or companies to screw you over time over time like this while taking your money, fine, that's your own thing. But I will not feed moneyhungry companies like this so they can walk over their loyal customers and SONY.. What have MS EVER done for SE compared to SONY? Besides throwing money over them these last two years only to prevent the PS3 from having RPG's (IMO this will also "kill" the RPG genre for a while, because the 360 is not the console most RPG lovers buy/bought. So SE thank you for helping doing this aswell). But that's about the only thing MS can do (throw money around). That and making crappy consoles...

Well fellas, this is the beginning of the end. Prepare yourselves for another industry crash. It happened before with over-saturation and little interest, only this time it will be from moneyhatting. Thanks m$, you pretty much are well on your way to razing yet another market. You've managed to plunder more than you contribute.

The more I think about it, the more this doesn't make sense. I think the writer of this article IS ASSUMING that the PS3 version will be held back. The more read articles about this elsewhere, the more it seems that the PS3 version will come out first. And I mean seriously, as far as a big announcement goes (not big as expected of course), the ps3 version coming out first would be a bigger announcement than a facking demo. Right?

Really, it would make sense if Square released the PS3 version first (if they'll have it finished first), as a timed exclusive, rather than wait for both versions to be finished.

That way, PS3 owners at least get the game first, and it gives people who don't have either console and are on the fence, the incentive to go with the PS3 to get the game, rather than wait 6 months or a year for the 360 version.

From Sony's perspective, this would be a pretty good win for them, and would pretty much keep Sony AND Xbox fans happy. Sony people get it first, but Xbox people still get it as well.
