Final Fantasy VII defined RPG genre, says Molyneux

Lionhead boss Peter Molyneux has described how he considers Square’s 1997 masterpiece Final Fantasy VII as the game that defined the RPG genre, before claiming that the PlayStation 3 lacks any "‘oh my god’ moments."
Speaking with Videogamer.com, Molyneux recalled his time with the PSX classic, commenting, "I always remember back to Final Fantasy VII, when I first played FFVII, that to me defined the genre.”
“Those were the 'oh my god' moments, I don't believe they exist. I haven't seen many of those on the PS3,” he added.
However, Molyneux was quick to remind readers that his opinion comes strictly as a gamer, owning every major console available, despite the fact Lionhead itself is owned by Microsoft.
"This is very much me as a gamer talking, not as an industry spokesman," he said. "I've got a PS3, a Wii and a 360, I've got just about everything.”

yea i think hes being very unfair to the PS3 there are some great moments on PS3, i dont know if id call them "omg moments" but there defently some head-turning moments. like the graphics of motorstorm, MGS4 and the b4 mentioned heavenly sword. ive always wondered what Molyneux thought of some JRPGs tho other then the "choose your path" RPGs...

I understand where he is coming from..sure the PS3 has had some great games already..but I think we are still waiting for our first "OMFG WTF!!?" game, which will eventually come out...
Bare in mind I haven't had one of those "OMFG WTF!!?" moments in a number of years now, but I feel we're due one pretty soon..what it'll be who can tell...but I'm a lot harder too impress these days, but you can just put that down to the "OMFG WTF!!?" games of the past that have raised my very high bar..lol

I think he needs to shutup, especially considering he creates 'Fable' which doesn't define the RPG genre. MGS4 has got to be the best game I have ever played (story) it's magnificent and I have no idea how he could not notice that games existance.

I agree, no real omg moments like FFVII on the PS3 as of yet. Hopefully FFXIII Versus will give us that moment, or perhaps white knight story will be a very good surprise. Some people may have experienced it with MGS4 but as I hate MGS, didn't really happen for me.

Peter made a big business error.
He took relatively little Microsoft money to make Fable 1 an Xbox exclusive. It didnt do the business it could have done if it was also released on the PS2 with its massive install base. Fable 1 didnt recoup its investment. Lionhead were in danger and Microsoft bought them for next to nothing. Now Molyneux is a Microsoft puppet who has spent his interviews criticising the PS3. Like Egyptology said, he knows who signs his paycheck.

This tard again? Is this a pathetic allusion that his Fable rehash will be as great as FFVII? Nah, couldnt be, he's a great gamer who owns a ps3. Or is it that PS3 in general PWNS Him! Late in the game I got an Xbox1 for purely nefarious purposes and I played Fable, its not that it was bad but it didn't define anything except being the only RPG on the console, and that is a judgement call. I think of it as more of an extended Action Adventure with RPG elements. Don't get me wrong, with some great minds at Lionhead (not him) and another bucket of money, F2 has the potential to be something pretty neat, but compared to FFVII it's gonna fail. I expect Xbots to tout it as super original, but it will probably just be really gimmicky. I mean c'mon fighting as a woman who is pregnant cuz u whored her around town sounds kinda funny, but thats about it. Watch out for more of this "I say this as a gamer" nonsense, cuz because he knows these are picked up by PSX sites he will try to distance himself from that M$ paycheck in our eyes.

I think you're all being too defensive. I am a massive fan of Peter, and like alot of people in the south of England have the upmost respect for the man and his opinion. When I was growing up playing the games he made, it changed the way thought about games, that they didn't have to be button mashers, here was a who wanted you to think about what you were doing. I think what he is trying to say is there has not been any gound breaking moments with regards to game play, we are all aware of the graphical capabilities of next gen, I was stunned with the way games like Motorstorm, and Uncharted looked, but when I was playing MGS4, although it was a great game, it just felt like another installment.

@Den, I have a lot of respect for Molyneux as a developer, but if he's highlighting the lack of groundbreaking gameplay, and singles out the PS3 (when the 360 has far more derivative games - it's got great shooters and racers, but while Halo 3 and Gears are fun, it'd be a brave soul that called them innovative!) then it reeks of bias. Particularly as the gameplay in Uncharted for me was a step forward - the pacing of the game, in particular (and pacing is an integral, if subtle, part of gameplay) was a huge step forward. CoD4 was similar (and on the PS3!), and anyone that says CoD4 wasn't an 'oh my god' moment is living in a cave. It may be that Molyneux, as a developer of strategy games and RPGs which don't really have the same pacing consideration, isn't awake to that. While he makes great games, he has said more than his share of clueless things about gaming, and on many occasions has exhibited an alarming lack of knowledge about gaming generally.

I must say I thought the cover system from gears was innovative, but it didn't make me coin omg. I agree we are stepping forward game play wise, but I have to agree (in some respect) with Molyneux, and still feel like there are better things to come, maybe he singles out the PS3 because he knows its potential, instead people are favouring cynicism, when I prefer to be deferential.
