Final Fantasy XIII gameplay footage overload

The chaps at GamePro have posted a substantial chunk of Final Fantasy XIII gameplay clips fresh from yesterday’s Premier Party event in Tokyo for your consumption.

Seen below, the footage contains heaps of battle action depicting familiar characters such as Lightning and Snow unleashing devastating summon attacks and scrapping with armed goons. Bare in mind that the footage was captured off-screen, so the quality is somewhat lacking.

Final Fantasy XIII is due out in Japan on December 17, with a western release scheduled for spring 2010.

    Looks incredible, love the environments shown in vids 1 and 3.

     The summon system is looking alot like XII :(

    But i'm not sure about the battle system.. It looks like X-2 (Good) but if it plays like XII it will be a huge disapointment...

    But can't wait to try it out :D

    Here is another leaked video for you PSU. It shows part of the private trailer and more gameplay.

    @2 trust me its nothing like XII the way it plays and the summons in gestalt form are controlled by you and not AI.=)

    looks good, but it's starting to look like it might just disapoint me a bit. My expectations are very high. but those battles don't look as fast paced as I was expecting, but I guess that's understandable.

  11. darksora | Rav_M

    • 3:56pm BST - September 9th, 2009

    @10: how fast paced do you want this game? lmao.

    Any faster and it'll have to be an action game instead of turn based.

    This game sucks...graphics ok, but fighting system blows...

    If the fighting system was similiar to GoW or DMC, then it might actually be fun to play (No disrespect to any of you RPG fans). Plus its just too much to learn with the whole equipping materia and using items and all that jazz....

    If they would simplify the fighting system to be a little more user-freidndly/button-mashy....I think it would attract a lot more casual/new gamers. These games can be a little complicated to play, and if u can't play...how can you progress in the game? You can't...you get stuck, get frustrated, and give up on it....and a great game with so much potential would just be a waste.

    Just my opinion.

    • 4:20pm BST - September 9th, 2009

    @14: You clearly haven't read much about this game or played many ff's if you're generalising them to mention materia. The battle system focuses on strategy and management instead of a button basher game where the attack button is all thats needed. Theres plenty of games like that, lol.

    • 4:25pm BST - September 9th, 2009

     i have never really been into the ff series, not really a fan of the turn based combat. i had twelve and likes the combat in that one but it was all a but too slow paced for me, dont like walking around for ages trying to level up!

    • 4:30pm BST - September 9th, 2009

    the more hack and slashy one is meant to be versus, as its apparently like kingdom hearts.

    and the Active Battle System (ATB) like in FFVII is good, i like it, but i also really liked FFX system (especially that i could use any character at anytime, and not choose wat 3 i want to split up into a seperate group ><") that was very important to me.

    i think you may have felt it slow pace only because u get kinda tricked with the senseless stepping around wondering if they got more than half a brain lol. But its actually just the character waiting for its turn im pretty sure. Turn Based Game.

    Otherwise wait for Versus :)

    • 4:36pm BST - September 9th, 2009

    No victory music after the battle? =(

  19. KH_Fan01

    • 4:40pm BST - September 9th, 2009

    @14

    Yeh thank god this game isn't an easy mindless button basher. The materia system in FFVII is one of the simplest I have come across in an RPG. I played and completed that game when I was 11 years old so that says it all really.

    @16

    This is a lot faster paced then 12 so you should like this one

  20. Kasor

    • 4:43pm BST - September 9th, 2009

    @14 .

    Dude .

    its strategic command-based battle system . not a fighting game .

  21. Maggot

    • 4:44pm BST - September 9th, 2009

    I bet we will hear the battle victory tune...I hope, all the previous FF have that :) This game looks sweet, can´t wait to get a chance to play it!

  22. KH_Fan01

    • 4:44pm BST - September 9th, 2009

    @18

    In the first video the person who uploaded it just put a ripped version of the battle theme over the video. So that isn't the natural sound your hearing from the game. They did confirm there will be victory music. =)

    • 4:47pm BST - September 9th, 2009

    @14:

    I logged in simply to inform you that, unfortunately, your opinion is retarded. Reason being: This is a Final Fantasy game, not some mindless buttonmasher which you seem to be used to.

    I'm truly sorry that learning how to play a video game is too complicated for you, but at least you know how to whip out those epic 20 hit combos in God of War*.

    *before you die to a Gorgon, of course.

    Good day.

  25. biron_w

    • 4:53pm BST - September 9th, 2009

     The last video is exactly why I won't be buying this.Boringly long boss battles - your attacks do little damage,there's do loads.20 mins later you've got 1/2 of their energy off.Yawn fest.

  26. Kasor

    • 4:53pm BST - September 9th, 2009

    it does look like FF12

  27. 6toes

    • 4:58pm BST - September 9th, 2009

     @14

    Learning the complexities of the fighting systems are half the fun of FF.  Trust me, once you've invested proper time into the games and get a grasp of how everythings works it can be very rewarding.

    @2

    I found the summons in FFXII to be completely useless. I hope this isn't the case here.

  28. Zanark

    • 5:01pm BST - September 9th, 2009

    Don't worry people it doesn't play like 12. It's so much more like the older FF games just more fast paced and you can pull of awesome chain attacks.

    I say this because I have the Japanese PS3 demo!

  29. coverton341 | groovy341

    • 5:05pm BST - September 9th, 2009

    The graphics look like they are going to be pretty sweet. Even from this "recorded from a screen" video capture we have. My one concern is that the summons don't look all that inspired. I mean the entire Shiba video just looked boring and repetitive IMO. And I see people saying that it is nothing like XII but it sure does look like it is going to be.

    All in all the fighting system looks alright I suppose and if you can control the summons then it might be better than how it looks. Maybe the person behind the wheel just really liked that one attack.

    For me the story has always been the compelling part of an RPG though and seeing as how I don't know enough about the story of FFXIII to make an informed decision yet I will hold off passing judgement. FF games have always been my favorite games and I will undoubtedly give this one a shot, I just hope it is as involving and captivating as VII, VIII, and X were.

    @14 I feel ya man.  I have missed materia since FFVII.  Back when magic was simple.  FF has gotten complicated.  I am just sad that it looks like FFXII....I didn't care too much for the battle system or the art direction.  The summons were lackluster as well.  Hopefully I am wrong about this one.

  31. ElPulga | xbacillusx

    • 5:10pm BST - September 9th, 2009

    I feel that the camera angles are a little a bit bad, sometimes they dont show the action as they should that can be a little bit annoying. Other than that the game looks great.

  32. Zanark

    • 5:13pm BST - September 9th, 2009

    You can move the camera around freely using the analog stick. It's mostly because the guy who is playing just sucks.

  33. DarkNemesis

    • 5:14pm BST - September 9th, 2009

    Nothing special,looks just like theprevious FF games.Not a bad thing,but not great either.This is not going to be the second coming of FFVII and it won't have the universal appeal outside it's genre like FFVII either.Regardless of what the fanboys say this is average.Nothing that I have not seen int he FF series for the past decade.Next!

  34. Morganator | Hero_Nakamoura

    • 5:18pm BST - September 9th, 2009

    So wait!  This game is turn based?  If so, my interest just renewed itself... a little bit!  I still think the graphics are crap though!  I wish they had kept it exclusive too. :(

    In any case, the game seems rather average to me especially considering all the time spent on it!

  35. Kazuya10

    • 5:27pm BST - September 9th, 2009

    @33

    Considering all numbered FF games from 7 onwards have outsold the game in your avatar by far that says it all really.

    @34

    Graphics look stunning. When you see the trailer at TGS you wont be saying this game looks average then.

  36. DarkNemesis

    • 5:33pm BST - September 9th, 2009

    @35 - Yes it says that people bought average games instead of a great game and that you have nothing to say to effectively rebute me.I owned the previous 2 FF games on the PS2 and both GOW games and I can say that GOW has delivered where it matters,a great gaming experience.Unlike FFX2 and FF12,which both were mediocre.

  37. *Chris*

    Looks amazing! Can't wait...shame I have to for anothe 6 to 8 months from the Japanese launch :(

  38. DarkNemesis

    • 5:40pm BST - September 9th, 2009

    Oh and GOW3 looks much better than FF13 ...as a game -won't even touch on graphics.Not saying that FF13 looks like crap,but some of you people need to come back to reality and realize that this game is not going to be what you had hoped it would be.Just like RE5.

  39. Kazuya10

    • 5:45pm BST - September 9th, 2009

    X-2 spin-off, XII loved by many just not to everyones taste.

    X is regarded as one of the best games on the PS2 and seeming as XIII has the same team behind the game it will deliver.

    God of War is a great series but nothing more then just cheap hack n slash. You play it once put it back in the case and maybe trade it in towards another game.

    @23:

    I logged in just to inform you that, unfortunately, your opinion about #14's opinion is retarded. Reason being: It is true that Final Fantasy is a different genre than a fighting game like, GOW.  And if casual gamers as well as #14 doesn't like this type of game, they can easily skip it and just go buy a fighting game instead.  But he/she was just stating what they would have liked the game to be more like and why they dont like rpg's.  There's nothing "retarded" about that.

    Learning to play some games are complicated, but some people might not have the time or patience or brain (i dont mean you #14, but idk) to fully understand it all, and we can't blame them for that.  And all my God of War combos ARE epic :) *.

    *I never get killled by a Gorgon, of course.

    @38: Both GOW3 and FF13 will be amazing, although i disagree with you on the grpahical department (I know you said you weren't touching on the graphics but it cam across like you were implying that GOW3's visuals blow away ff13). To me, FF13 looks better than GOW3 O.o

    Although, of course on a technical level GOW3 is indeed impressive with how a whole freaking titan can be traversed :o

    ^^ it literally is the person in the first vid is good at playing and and person in the 2nd sucks and is just spamming. When he summons Shiva he doesnt even attack with his character and after Shiva goes away he doesnt even set Sahz to attack.......
