Final Fantasy XIII supports 1080p

Square Enix's Final Fantasy XIII is stunning. There's no denying that. Most assumed that due to the game's graphical prowess that it would stick to a less taxing 720p resolution. We have more good news for the certainly not final Final Fantasy: most were wrong.

FF-XIII.net reports that the Final Fantasy XIII demo runs runs in 1080p. That, however, is only half the story. While some of the demos lengthy cut-scenes do appear to be 1080p native, other elements, like shorter in-game cut-scenes and gameplay, are projected in 720p and possibly upscaled to a 1080p resolution.

Still, we're flabbergasted that Square Enix would even attempt to support 1080p in Final Fantasy XIII. Meanwhile, thanks to Blu-ray, PS3 owners shouldn't be stuck with a six-disc edition.

We'll have more on Final Fantasy XIII as it comes in.

how is 360 going to handle this. how big the game is and running at 1080p this is to much for it can we all say 10 disc. unless square got some kind of magic up there sleeves.

Hopefully not the same way GT `supported' 1080p.  Lots of tearing and choppy frame-rates; no thanks.

Cutscenes native + scaled engine display sounds good though,

That's what I heard TsengVII, next year usually means late next year. I'm looking foward to it but I can't be bothered driving myself mad over something that isn't even close.

finally a good game that actually supports 1080p it annoys me that great games like resistance 2 motorstorm 2 or even GTA 4 don't have support for 1080p and games like sonic do. it would be interesting to see SE use a 3rd or 4th layer (ie second disc or have one specially built with more layers)

You know, as long as the PS3 does the system justice I can probably forgive SE.  They do need to show the love, though.  The last time an FF was on the most powerful system of its generation was the Super Nintendo days.

    Here's hoping for the best.

Hmm, theres'  something that's been swirling around in my head since the day SE announced FFXIII for the 360. That being a sort of "Guess we didn't think it through entirely" of sorts for when the game does hit that system. I'm really just waiting to see if Square will actually come out and present a huge multi-disc system, mega manditory install and even then compressed assets for teh 360 version.

I'm really not tryign to appear "fanboyish" I just wonder. We all know the limitations of a dvd disc and that some RPGs out now are already multi-disced on the 360. Just what taxing will the 1080p video, and 720p/1080p gameplay assets do to the 360 stoage handeling.

make it so that blu-ray can handle just enough for full 1080p support which will force xbox 360 to have highest resolution at 720p.

What I would love to hear is that the game has multiple controller support for the battles (like FF6 and Eternal Sonata)... 1080p is still cool I guess, specially if you have one of those 30" Dell or Apple monitor - It doesnt change anything for TV since 1080p to are bigger and you have to be further away.

Any good antialias will do anyway. It's better 720p smooth than 1080p jagged.

Say the Xbox360 version of this game was out of the picture.

Would Final Fantasy XIII be released on the Playstation 3 in Japan and NA simutaniously?

No, we have to wait in NA for the X360 release. Thats cool with me though, my ps3 gave me the yellow light off death last week and I don't have $149 to have it repaired.

Multi-disc sucks ... I never finished FF8 coz teh second or third disc was scratched.  I played through teh first half of the game only to be left with a coffe coaster.  Shame really as it put me off going out to source another copy and playing through.  Long live blu-ray :D

LOL@ comments 25 and 26. MAH FEELINGS ARE HURTING.

Most likely the CGI and Cutscenes can support full 1080p, the gameplay runs 720p native and a solid fixed 30fps. There was minimal framerates in the demo and they said since the demo is such an old build the final version any frame problems will be ironed out.

The demo looked amazing and easily one of the best looking PS3 games and after seeing some newer images and the improvements from the demo build.

    Just WOW.

didnt' square confirm that it was going to be 720p? Even if the demo is 1080p they might drop it to make it equal to the 360 version, but hopefully not because I don't see the 360 getting 1080p. That would take way to much space.

PS4 will be the system to bring true native 1080p resolution video games.  This Final Fantasy game will only support native 720p resolution and possibly upscale the image to 1080p.

It supports 1080p but it built for 720p.

I think the devs released a statement about it was built for 720p about 2 weeks ago.

Cool that it's in 1080p but it's only upscaling. Most of the time your TV will do the upscaling itself, the resoluton your tv shows is just the source. Games rendered at 1080p are still a generation away.

LoL @ 6 discs, it's probably true. I'm playing Lost Odyssey at the moment and that's 4 discs for a game that's about 40 hours long. Six sounds like a reasonable estimate.

Didn't square say that they finish ps3 version first and then make the xbox360 version as good as they can. So if they can't make some random cutscenes run at native 1080p, then they'll be 720p.
