Final Fantasy XIII won't feature a main character

Famitsu recently published an interview with Final Fantasy XIII Director Motomu Toriyama, in which he divulged several new tidbits of information regarding the hotly anticipated RPG title.

Toriyama revealed that the forthcoming demo bundled with Final Fantasy: Advent Children Complete will allow gamers to play from the opening to the end of the prologue. Throughout the demo, gamers will be able to play not only as Lightning, but also an as yet to be named blonde male that we've included a picture of below.

As for which character will lead the title? Neither. According to Toriyama, Final Fantasy XIII will take on a new style of play with their characters in which no single personality will dominate the game.

Instead, players can expect to experience the game through a variety of characters. This change of style will also allow you to switch players during combat much like you could in FFXII.

Well i know that will make up my mind not to buy this game, want at least a main character in this game.

Really? I think focusing on several different characters will keep things fresh...

C'mon no main character? Is SE trying to make this gameplay focused rather than story focused? In that case bring on Versus.@Eric

Yeah,it'll probably keep things "fresh",but,if they focus on just one character, then it increases, imo, immersion.

Sounds pretty interesting! One of the biggest problems with the FF series traditionally has been that you tend to stick with your main party characters and not rotate other characters into the mix, so this should help solve that problem.

Well this sounds like they're trying to take a FF6 approach and i don't mind cause that game was gold, you actually felt for the characters and you were able to use every character, plus Shadow so it was pure Win

I don't like the idea.... :( the story is the biggest part of final fantasy, and if there is no main character, how are we, as gamer, suppost to connect to the characters if they keep switching characters...

I'm not sure about this move. A good story usually accounts some transition or experience for a main character. Having 'no main character', the player might not get the same experience or the level of evoked emotion that FF games have been famous for.

I don't know if it's worse to have a female main char, or no main char, but either way this game was dead to me the minute I thought there was a female main character, now that there isn't one and it's not a PS3 exclusive it's as dead as ever.

@ 11 I agree with most of what you say. I know I've said it before but it's becoming more and more true now. This is not the same company we once loved and adored. From here on out, expect FF games to change as we once new them. I will still probally get it, but I don't know if I will enjoy it.

it could work, but has to be done real well, otherwise the story might feel wrong or incomplete.  but let's hope they don't mess it up.

Doesn't vsXIII have the Prince as the main character? I guess you guys can go with that one if you don't like not having a single character to focus on. I don't mind. If they do it at least as good as XII did, which I actually thought was good narative wise, then I'm all for it.

I don't like this idea, It works great for some games but they're really starting to mess with a formula that has worked perfectly for years now.

FF6 did it, and it is probably my second favorite FF... Have a little faith people, don't slam SE before they even show you what they have done with this idea :P

I agree with everyone else - not a good move.

At least they're not doing this for Versus XIII! Let this game be perfect, please. (Or at least as perfect as is possible.)

This is nothing new to me since it's like watching an anime full of in-depth development from each character. However, for this FFXIII game to take into this direction will be interesting.

Lightning has to be the dumbest name ever but the game still looks promising. What do they mean about not focusing on one character though? I like the idea of giving every character a purpose but is it going to be like 12 where the story was flat out boring for the most part? I liked 10's story because everyone had a reason to be there. 12 the main character felt like he didn't belong and Penello was just a waste of space.

everyone else DOES NOT think this is a bad idea.

The point her is to make a game that gives you MORE personality rather than put one person up front as a star because chances are not everyone is going to like a single character. Not everyone like Tidus, but went ape for Wakka or Auron, If you dont like Van, too bad he was the lead, not Penelo. Maybe you like vincent more than Cloud? Here all the character get equal time it makes it a lot easier later if they decide to spin one of these characters off into their own game.

I guess we'll have to wait and see how things turn out... But so far versus is starting to look way better that FFXIII in anyway. But i will gt both when they get released. But not having a main caracter could be kinda strange unless they interleave the caracters story so it comes to one final ending. Sort of what the movie Vantage Point did... you know different caracters with different views, so that at the end you see the complete story unfold.... something like that.

My favorite FF game is the 6 and you have multiples story background and (in that game) connect with every siongle character. I love the idea to take this approach once again and don't let them any character out of importance in the main story.

having no main character would definetly make gameplay better, but story wise idk, i guess we'll have to wait and see cuz it has worked before but who knows, the story could still turn out great. They better not do this to versus though cuz thats gonna piss me off
