(continued from previous page) ...Folklore is very simple. When you begin a game, you can choose Ellen to the left or Keats to the right and play through that chapter from the respective choice. The chapter for both of them starts off with talking to the unique residents---reminiscent of a Hiyao Miyazaki film---and explore Doolin’s past slowly. Afterwards, a door opens to the Netherworld and the player battles through each one until it faces a Folklore---a huge creature at the end of every level.

Folklore uses such an interface that provides players a break from all the beautiful insanity the world has to offer. The pacing in particular to the interface is unbelievably remarkable and balances narratives with the gameplay stupendously. Even though alternating the characters is great, it presents its problems. In Folklore, each of the character perspectives visits the same realm in the same order, which shows the unique regions quite a lot for a game in which you have to battle through each one on an alternate character to progress through the story. Even though the game changes Folks around to make up for this, it can get annoying at the end of a boss fight to realize you have to beat the same boss again. How annoying this becomes is in essence up to the player with the game’s controller.
Interface-wise, the battles are remarkable and take place only in the Netherworld when the player is in each realm. During battle, the left stick is used to move the character and the right functions the camera. Lock on is a special system that is enabled by L1. In this mode, the player can easily target an enemy and strafe as he uses his personal Folks to attack it. R2 is primarily used to dodge/roll in battle to any pointed direction.

The face buttons can be used to map out specific folks, which primarily gives players the option to customize for the Folks in their arsenal. With such an option given to natural creativity, the player can choose specific Folks to map out and even base their entire strategy on them. Changing the face buttons can be accomplished through L2, where a menu pops up with the Folks collected and much more information on each Folk. Each Folk can be categorized via elemental alignment or what realm captured them in. The categorization definitely aids in making the search for Folks easier.
The only downfall to this face button mechanic is the fact that there is a pause present when the ability menu is closed. You choose your Folks, and then close it to face a 2-3 second pause—which is terrible but not reflective of the overall experience. Even though the pause is short, it can seem very long in the heat of battle.

The primary fun in the battles comes through not only the pacing but also acquiring the Folks. Ellen and Keats primarily attack not by fists, but with fallen Ids at the beginning of the game. Folk are creatures that travel the Netherworld, and are unique to each realm. Attacking a Folk has many different effects: the attack was useless, it did some damage, or it releases the Folk's Id from its body.
When the Id’s turn pink, the effective use of the Sixaxis is implemented via a yank system. The player jerks their controllers up while holding R1 and the Id comes flashing out of the Folk. These controls become more complicated with bigger creatures and especially Folklore’s. There are a variety of ways to remove the Id from their bodies, another amazing feature that helps to truly expand the breadth of the battle’s ending. One primary example is where the controller is only jerked up when the Id is red. A bar indicates the soul-stealing process and if yanked too early, the magical liquid lowers---indicating a release from the player’s hold and slight recuperation of the Id. Such a varied, game style mechanic implements the Sixaxis accurately and effectively with the combat system.

Fortunately, the battles are not repetitive. Combat is always alive by placing different powers of the Folks via different perspectives of Ellen and Keats. When Ellen summons a Folk when fighting, it appears as the ... (continued on next page)

I'm still unsure if I should get this game, I do like RPG's and Its also based In my country of Ireland...but still not sure..?
Man i hate to say,but again another review is strongly biased. I wish they would switch they gaming scales to .1 intervals, and start giving more accurate rating, sorry PSU, you're the best gaming website for playstation, but its really annoying me. I think it should have been an 7.5 to an 8.5.
I highly recommend this game! It truely is a hidden treasure (overlooked by some of the more hyped releases this month) and I think everyone should pick this one up. In fact I pray for a sequel (now that'd rock). The only thing IMO that lets this game down is some of the voice acting. The main characters are exceptional in this regard, but when it comes to some of the 'additional characters' (like the sea captain at the beginning) it blows big time. But overall I'd give this game a 9.5/10 - so i'm happy to see PSU give it the credit it deserves :) Cheers
I also highly recommend this game. I sat down to play it the first day I got it and HOURS went by in no time. It's so fun. I'm sure my next day off the game will be completed. Good thing too, because I just bought Guitar Hero3
I tryed out the game WAy WAy to much dialog and searching around- thefighting is cool but the BS gets in the way- I returned it after 3 days. A 7.5 for me. Sorry guys not my taste! A 9 is to high lets be realistic now!

the story of the game the artistic way of the game the gameplay it self is all new and amazing for what reason would you give it 7.5-8.5?
you know i think no fps deservs 9 just b/c of the online, gaming isnt all about killing its about story but yet u see bad campaign and good online and getting from 5 to 9, any game that is able to create something 100% new and new gameplay and land and story deservs more then 8.5 the only way it could get that is if was buggs and so on, have u even played the game? baised is when people give it something it didnt deserv but your saying it based on the face that they didnt give it 90,01?
when i first tryed fps i hated it simply hated it felt like arcade move the gun and shoot game that was it for me years later i started liking spy games and hitman and it kicked me back to fps, anyone cant be rpg fan, if your not exited about the story return it and just jump over it, the only reason i bought ps3 is b/c i get to play rpg, fps isnt really console thing but spy games are and driving etc, for me rpg is the nr 1 and if its not for you then you shouldnt be the one criticizing it.
anyway great game.
you guys are like those 360s that say mgs had too many scenes and you jut dont realize it.
psn id: gingo... one of the best storys in any game ever i love this game and the gameplay is solid aswell one of the best games i've ever bought
I havent played the game and would quite like to pick it up but...
Does every ps3 game have to get an 8.5 to 9 on here? ive never seen a critical review yet and it kind of erodes the credibility of a 9.0 score. Not that Im saying this game shouldnt get a 9, just that it seems a lot of games get fantastic reviews on what's, lets face it, is a ps3 fansite.
well at least he didn't try and tell us its the best RPG to date on any console!!!! ha ha!!
Its not exactly an RPG.. its more action/adventure with RPG elements. And here's the catch with this game: you either like it or you dont. Its one of those. For those of us into gothic sort of horror environments with a solid story and fantasy elements then this game is a blessing. If your not into that then you may find the game a little TOO outthere, and boring for your taste. But its easily one of my all time favourite games.. absolutely beautiful graphics and as I said before - if they make a sequel I'd be all over it like white on rice.
9/10 for me too, hot game one ofthe best RPGs this year.
I COULD NOT stop playing this game YOU HAVE TO READ THE SUBTITLES AND WATCH THE CUTSCENES the story is what this game is all about its like watching a movie you dont turn it off half way though watch it later fortunalty i manged to or i woudl have finshed this game with out stopping. Not only did i love the story so much but the creatures especialy the bargest and the mini bargest thigns and also the clock creature i feel are my favorite style of monster in any game. The "Halflives" in the pub and the feeling of it remind me of kingdom hearts. 1 thing that stood out to me to is that i wanted to keep goging back to the nether world BECUASE IT IS SO MUCH MORE BRIGHT AND LOVING THEN THE REAL WORLD THIS IS EASPELCILY APPARENT IN THE PUB. you can relly see why the young girl the duaghter of the pub land lord ( who i am sad to say i belive has the same same charecter modle as cecial which kind of killed the realisum a lil) vist the netherworld eveyr night somethign i found out when tlaking to a two headed tin man in the warmth of the pub at night time. THIS GAME IS SO BRILLIAN small but brilliant. it woudl proably have been hard to keep such depth to the story if they had enlarged it any more and i think that they did this perfectly. i almost never bought this gaem i had played the dmeo a few times but that dosent give it justice i am SO GLAD I BOUGHT IT
this games indeed looks fantastic!
a 8.5-9 is perfect score!! i love the creature in that game!! it takes u to another world!!similar to final fantasy that the feelings u get but not the same!
i think this is one of those games u have to love or hate
ive seen a lot of positive and negative reviews
people will harp on some of the strangest things thou >.>
psu dosent rate crappy games thats y
this game is very artistic and you all are like lil kids "get to the super powerranger action waahh waaah!" wow have you all forgoting games as an art form made to take you to different places?
w.e i love this game we finally get an original game on ps3 like every ones been asking for.. so then they all start bi*ching about it.....? mmkay wow
folklore is an amazing escape people =]
(btw i really have no clue ow u guys play "final fantasy" if u dont like story and dialoge..)
It 'delves' players? How about speaking English? Last time I checked the infinitive to delve wasn't transitive. Nor did it come close to the meaning the reviewer assumes it to have... This is pathetic.
i only played the demo for about 5 minutes at the local gamestop but from what i saw it looks like a solid game with nice graphics and interactive gameplay.
