The launch of Rockstar’s critically acclaimed Grand Theft Auto IV has been a key driver in the number of PlayStation 3’s sold this week, according to reports from US retailer, Gamestop.
The company’s Senior Vice President of Merchandising, Bob McKenzie, commented, “From our position, the launch of Grand Theft Auto IV has been tremendous in driving traffic to our stores, as well as providing a vigorous lift in PS3 console sales over this time last week.”
“We attribute the growth to a huge fan base of PS2 owners who see this title as the trigger for the PS3 upgrade they’ve been planning.”
Renowned industry analyst Michael Pachter also backed up these comments, noting that users are likely to flock to GTA IV as a reason to upgrade to the next-generation of consoles.
“I think brand loyalty is going to kick in for Sony, starting today,” said Pachter.
“There is a huge installed base of loyal PlayStation 2 owners who have been looking for a reason to upgrade, and they have strong previous ties to the Grand Theft Auto franchise on PlayStation platforms.”
“Add to that a number of other big exclusive games for PS3, including Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, Metal Gear Solid 4, LittleBigPlanet, and SOCOM: Confrontation, to name a few, and it seems like Sony’s in a great position right now.”
“Grand Theft Auto fans who love the game grew up on PlayStation and we believe that rich heritage will be a deciding factor for many gamers at retail,” added Peter Dille, Senior Vice President of Marketing and PlayStation Network, SCEA.
“This enthusiasm for Grand Theft Auto IV, combined with the excitement behind Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, Metal Gear Solid 4, LittleBigPlanet, and Resistance 2 will further drive PS3 hardware sales.”

@Aphexman - Yes, sales wise there are more copies of GTAIV going to the 360, but the attach rate of the PS3 version is higher. Meaning. THere are more 360s out there but more PS3 owners are buying GTAIV for their systems than 360 owners. So while it ads up to more on the 360, it may be like %50 of 360 owners are getting GTAIV while 75% of PS3 owners are snagging up GTAIV which again just goes back to what the article says about brand loyality.

I try to not be a fanboy but after having 2 30's crapping out on me during oblivion last year it became plain to see why spend hundreds of dollars on somthing that isnt a good investment. Ive never had problems with any sony products even those late night controller throwings from dieing to the last boss on ff7. I try to be a fanboy of games not consoles. But its plain to see ps3 is the future of gaming.

This really isn't surprising, I mean, the PS1 sold over 100 million consoles worldwide, The PS2 sold over 120 million consoles worldwide and STILL selling, and a LOT of PS2 owners will be getting PS3's.
The Xbox 360 user base may be higher than the PS3's "at the moment", but the PS3's actual potential user base is several times higher than the Xbox 360's. Once Sony's big guns like Metal Gear Solid 4 , Final Fantasy XIII, God of War 3, and Killzone 2 start rolling out, it's going to be nothing but PS3 power.
