Grand Theft Auto IV to last roughly 100 hours

Posted on February 28th, 2008 at 13:47 EDT

On top of having a massive open-ended world to be your new playground, Rockstar has given its gamers a huge amount of pure story to play with as well. According to Rockstar, if you take your time and answer your phone regularly, Grand Theft Auto IV could potentially last roughly 100 hours worth of actual story gameplay.

"If you're not in a rush and you answer the phone when it rings it'll take about 100 hours to complete", a Rockstar representative said. "It's harder to distinguish between main and side missions - there are loads of both. But there are more main missions than side missions. It's not as clear cut as it used to be because of the phone."

It has been known for awhile that GTA IV will heavily focus around Niko's phone, so it's no surprise that the game has the potential to be lengthy, but 100 hours was rather unexpected. Niko's phone is not only a way to gain new missions or story pieces, but also your gateway into the multiplayer functionality of Grand Theft Auto IV. We'll keep you up to date if anything else happens.

I wonder if taking or ignoring some of these missions effect the story at all.  I would love to see something like that.

Wow.  I probably played San Andreas over 100 hours just roaming and having little massacres.  Sounds good to me.

FINALLY!  a developer has given me $60 worth of single-player, good ol' story-driven gameplay, and not forced me to spend $60 for six hours of single-player gameplay and thrown in eight hours of online play for good measure.

@ atrimus:  Glad to see a fellow single-player gamer.  I could get online anytime but I always prefer single-player.

I'm not surprised to hear that GTA4 will be a 100 hour game. I probably spent over 200 hours playing San Andreas by just roaming around and causing chaos.

If the story mode in GTA4 will last around 100 hours, then I'm sure that I'll spend over 300 hours just playing GTA4 in total. I'm very disappointed that you can't fly planes in GTA4 because I would spend a lot of time flying planes in San Andreas, however, I know that I will spend a lot of time playing GTA4

I'm never the type of person that starts playing a game and just plays for hours and hours straight just to beat the game as fast as possible. I always take my time when playing through a game so that it lasts longer. GTA4 will surely last me until Resistance 2 and Killzone 2 later on this year... I just hope to God that those 2 games don't get pushed into 2009 because I'm looking forward to them the most after I get MGS4. and GTA4.

I can't wait for this game. I hope it's a better 100 hours spent than San Andreas. I probably spent that much time in GTASA, but I lost interest way before that point. I have no idea why I continued that game. Vice City was the best IMO of the "next gen" GTAs.

wow. 100 hours? i'd have to see it to believe it. but he did say that the main storyline and the side missions are hard to keep apart. so i wonder if you dont do a side mission when the phone rings, will it effect the main storyline?

Good stuff rockstar and A.dont sell out to EA and B. stop taking back handers from slime ball bill gates (360 version having way more content and better online) IS THIS TRUE????

@richkaos - "better online + more content" Both the XBox 360 and Playstation 3 versions of GTA IV are identicle regarding online features. One is not "better" than the other in this respect. The XBox 360 will however have "missions" available for download. Of course, this is better if you're not satisfied with a measly 100 hours worth of gameplay. [/sarcasm]
