HD DVD expert: Gamers aren't using consoles for movies

According to the Blu-ray Disc Association, millions are watching movies on their PS3s, but an HD DVD expert claims that this is untrue and that many gamers aren't even aware that their console can play HD movies.

Olivier Van Wynendaele, spokesman for the HD DVD Promotion Group, made the claims during an exclusive interview with Tech.co.uk.

He says, according to indepedent research figures, that 60 per cent of game consoles owners don't know they can play movies - either DVD or Blu-ray - on their PS3.

Furthermore, of the remaining 40 per cent, Van Wynendaele says that just 13 per cent are actually using their games console as a player.

With the quality of games recently released on PS3, can you really blame gamers for wanting to play GAMES on their GAMES consoles though?

Add to that the relatively high price of Blu-Ray/HD DVDs and it's no wonder that many are not that bothered about watching movies through their PS3.

Van Wynendaele also added that the same applies to owners of Microsoft's Xbox 360.

Olivier Van Wynendaele can kiss my a**.  I'm tired of these so called "experts" claiming the SAME piece of information.  When ever they talk about this, its the same statistic... nothing else to back it up, or other studies to conferm it.  Burn in he** HD-DVD!

screw those so call experts, they couldn't tell the differents from their own a?? and a hole in the ground. beside when you hear them speak, you can tell that most of them don't game. the only gaming they see are from behind their children backs when they do bother to make home, once in a blue that is!

I'm pretty sure anyone who drops 400 dollars on a machine knows what it can do. If they don't then they're just plain stupid. Obviously the PS3 must be doing something to affect Blu-ray sales.

According to this tool new PS3 owners are asking themselves, hmm, why does sony put a blu-ray logo on the FRONT of the box and why did they include this Spider-Man 3 blu-ray disc in the box? HDDEAD group has their heads stuck in the ground and they are spreading misinformation to consumers hoping that they too have their heads similiarly stuck underground. I don't know any PS3 owners who don't know that the machine can play blu-ray discs, and I myself have about 8 blu-ray discs and watch them on my ps3 all the time, and when I have friends and family over to watch a movie, we watch it in hi-def natively or upscaled on my PS3. HD-DUD, it is now time to give up hope, stop wasting our time already.

He does have a point I am slowly realizing. THe majority of PS3 users aren't but enough are to make a dent and HD-DVD camp is looking for any reason to combat  the combined threat of blu ray stand alones and  the smal fraction of PS3 users that ourchase blu ray. What I see with HD-DVD is that they are having a firesale with thier hardware just to show to studio big wigs that they will sell more after getting a larger base of people with their low prices and their free movie offers. It smells like fear.

That being said, their strategy might work...... and I put a heave emphasis on  might. When their base start to question why the disney, fox ,sony, MGM and lionsgate movies arent in the HD DVD aisle then the wave might change. If warner does go exclusive to BR( or HD-DVD) this format war will get really heated. I will continue to purchase Blu rays because of the built in feature of my PS3 but I am starting to wonder if I might have to buy an HD-DVD player later on down the road.

EDIT: I see all these combative comments but you do realize that if the majority of PS3 owners in the US were buying blu rays then BR should be way over 2:1 ratio with HD-DVD. I am not sure how it is happening in the rest of the world ( I hear blu ray is killing) but the landscape changing in america does affect me because blu rays are still regional.

Hmmm....if 13% are using their ps3 as a blu-ray player...and 4 million new ps3's are sold between now & the new year--That means 520,000 new blu-ray users will be on the market.  Not a bad figure--in addition, the awareness level of blu-ray & # of HD TV owners will increase over the holdiays pushing that figure to 16-17% (@ a minimum)--making new blu-ray users around 640,000-680,000!  Not too shabby for ps3 owners not using blu-ray.  Then plan on adding another 450,000 stand alone blu-ray player sales over the holiday--that leaves a total of 1,090,000 to 1,140,000 NEW blu-ray users.  HD-DVD plans on adding around 1 million new users this holdiay--looks like blu-ray plans for even more.  The sales figures will change little.  HD-DVD Retards.

    @Staticneuron....

Blu-ray is outselling HD-DVD around 4.0-4.5:1 in Europe and Australia

Blu-ray is outselling HD-DVD around 9:1 in Japan.

So worldwide blu-ray is TRULY knocking out...US it's a bit closer.

    • 7:00pm GMT - November 3rd, 2007

13% of people watching Blu-Ray movies on their PS3 is still better then that 0% of Crashbox180 owners that watches HD-DVD on their system. Why? Because that thing uses an old last-gen DVD player and can't even play HD movies. EDIT: Ow wait, I forget that crappy HD-DVD addon drive which uses USB2.0 first and than output the signal via an analog cable. WOW, that will be high quality. /sarcasm.

  23. chimmy

    • 7:07pm GMT - November 3rd, 2007

I think the issue is most people owning a PS3, don't also own a HD-TV.  Hence, yes, most PS3 owners don't play BRs... of course they know the machine can!  Fact is ppl buy PS3 as a gaming console, not as a BR player- the PS3 is a cheap, poor BR player, in the same way PS2 was a cheap/poor DVD player... neither could outclass simularly priced stand alone players, and neither would be considered by movie buffs as their source player.

    • 7:18pm GMT - November 3rd, 2007

I've met quite a few PS3 owners, and never one that didn't know it can play BD and DVD. Heck, I don't even know an Xbox360 owner who doesn't know the PS3 can do that.

The HD-DVD camp is desperate. If you compare their propaganda, it's clear that they're lying. On one hand, even though they don't dispute that Blu-Ray is outselling them left and right, they claim that what's more important is the number of discs bought by owners of stand-alone players, whining that BD purchases by PS3 owners skew the stats unfairly; now, on the other hand, they claim that PS3 owners don't buy BDs. Bah!

    • 7:27pm GMT - November 3rd, 2007

For me, movie playing ability has been a big factor in my console buying choices for quite a while. Back when I bought my PS2 on release day, I knew it could play DVDs, and it was my first and only DVD player for quite a while. The same thing is true now for the PS3, its my first and only Blu-Ray player, and part of my reasoning for plunking down the cash for the machine was the Blu-Ray playability.

  26. Clover09 | whiteboykyle

    • 7:31pm GMT - November 3rd, 2007

Thats why he is called a HD-DVD expert, because he doesn't now anything about Bluray, and I wonder when he speaks does he realize he is making himself sound like an idiot. If he wants to be a HD-DVD expert he needs to have more publicity talking about HD-DVD not another way to try and make a stab at Bluray because right now he sounds more like a moron than a expert.

Wow this guy is a moron, and does not show his proof of this. Everyone I know that has a PS3 over the age of 14 know its a Blu Ray HD player. I have 2 Blu Ray Movies and am buying Planet Earth this week.

Even my 10 year old cousin is getting a PS3 this Xmas and he said to me "I can't wait to play Spider-man 3 High Def on my dad's plasma tv". To my surprise, i just said you think your smart or something huh

LOL!!!! What are these cats smoking....I been watching movies on my PS brand products since the PS2 and  Im sooo loving the blu-ray and dvd playback on my PS3. Im pretty sure my PS3 have seen more T&A in the year its been out than he has seen in his lifetime...lol...

but  if 13% use their consoles to watch movies and blu-ray is trouncing HD DVD, then imagine when the rest, Im not gonna say 87%, but 27%(40%-13% for the slow) start watching movies then its not gonna look good for his camp. And lets not even start talking about stand alone players, computers, car players and camcorders....wow..these guys might be in a pickle...

Actually instead of researching how many people use their ps3 for movies they should research how many people believe their xbox can play HD DVD out the box, you will be suprised, alot of people think so for some reason, i correct people frequently

  30. smatt584

    • 7:50pm GMT - November 3rd, 2007

This guy is a jackass. Everybody i know who would buy a PS3 cites Blu-Ray as one of the reasons. What i do see, however, is a ton of people who thought they could watch HD-DVDs on their Xbox 360's straight out of the box and were extremely pissed when they bought it and found out they needed a completely seperate machine. Microsoft, i'm sorry that you were so freaking greedy and stupid to choose the strategy that you did, but give it a rest. Nobody likes a sore loser.

I noticed the lady from the corner of my eye watching and listening, than as i finished and started to push the cart, i seen the lady quickly run to her husband and start pointing at me, the blu ray player, and most likely told him about the PS3" hahaha thats good stuff

Now thats just idiotic, that like saying no one knew the PS2 can play DVD movies when it came out too. :E Of course you can play it, read the damn manuel or look at the supported formats sheesh. Also with the amount of deals sony has with bundling Blu-ray movies on the PS3's 80gig, I think other major movie companies will make sure they take advantage of the holiday season to make specials deals as well.

I mean just for the statement not that many people even know it can play dvds is totally an ignorant statement.  120millions+ ps2 sold and every1 knew it could play dvds... why cant ps3?? AND IT F8KN SAYS IT CAN PLAY BLUE RAY ON THE DAM BOX...  Who would by something that doesnt know what they are buying.  Also blue ray is not just for the gamers specifically but for the game devs.  All games are created on blue ray discs so how could you not know.  I would smack the shyt out of this person if i ever seen him in real life.  Also maybe this guy is just mad he cant find good movies on HD-DVD and wants to spread bad propaganda but ohwell.  His words will affect no1 and blue-ray will live on.
