Haze Hands-On

(continued from previous page) ...some areas that are quite dark, it can be hard to pick up where you’re being shot from. Injecting some Nectar and surveying your surroundings will help you quickly locate any guerrillas baying for your jacked-up blood.
The nectar also has the effect of ‘highlighting’ your shots in a way, whether its because of the small spurt of blood from the impact on the backdrop of the luminous yellow or just making the spurt more bold we didn’t quite ascertain. Either way it makes shooting ranged opponents much easier, as you can tell whether or not you’re actually hitting them, and where.
To balance out the benefits you get from the nectar, you only get so many doses of it at the start of the level, and each dose runs out after so long. However, killing enemies gives you a ‘boost’ in your nectar, so chaining kills makes your dose last a whole lot longer. This helps drastically when you’re trying to defend a position from waves of guerrillas, as you can last with a minimal amount of Nectar use.
To add to the balancing, you can overdose on the stuff if you try to inject yourself with too much at one time. This causes the player to initially start swaying wildly, and if any friends are in sight, your gun will start shooting on its own to replicate loss of control. At times like this, you cannot tell friend from foe, as everyone is just a black silhouette. Eventually you will recover, and the nectar meter will go down to show how much time you have left until you do. Overdosing is fairly annoying when it happens, so you soon learn the limits of using your nectar in the best way.
There was a brief driving section where you manned a jeep not unlike the Hellbender of Unreal Tournament fame. Two of your teammates could sit on either side of the jeep and fire out, while a third can operate the mounted turret on the rear. The section was a bit like one of the many driving bits in Halo, although dismounting during fights was far easier than trying to run your foe over. This, in some ways, is better as it keeps the action a little fresher.
Graphically, the game looked fairly good, although character eyes would stay firmly in place, giving them a creepy, glazed expression most of the time. Still, it ran smoothly without any noticeable slow down, even with grenades and guns going off around the place. The cutscenes were well animated even with the unmoving eyes of evil, although some of the character dialogue felt like they were trying to copy some of the machoism from Gears of War. However, this seems like it's probably part of the plot and part of the effect the Nectar has on the soldiers.
Overall, for an unfinished product, Haze was an enjoyable experience. Going around blasting luminous people with the magnum was a great joy, although on the flipside, the rest of the experience felt like most other shooters out there. As it’s not finished, some of these niggles may be ironed out, but either way, it’ll be interesting to see how all this carries over into the multiplayer, especially as multiplayer tends to make or break a lot of FPS games.

Halo Killer. Or I don't know, I have Halo 3 and have played it for 200hrs+ online and the singleplayer 2 times through. Halo is a great game, but I believe Haze could be better.
And I can't wait to test the nectar system. It just seems to be a great strategic factor in an FPS. This is not your normal everyday FPS, this is Haze, and Haze offers versatile gameplay and everchanging situations brought to you by nectar. Can't wait, really. Preordered this last september.

Good preview. I don't think this game can match up to R2 or KZ2. I'll probably just rent this to hold me over.

wow, did this guy give a preview and not mention 1 thing about the frame rate, lag, or graphics? What a bad review, he just said everything we knew allready, and nothing about what we really wanted to know.....

To all you Haze haters why dont you STFU and wait for the game to ship. I get so sick and tired of people spewing their hate when a game hasn't even been realesed yet. If your not interested then just say so. At least rent it for your self before you make a judgement.

looking forward to haze. play on two different sides with a lot of features besides heavy gunfire to spice up the gameplay (nectar, weapon steal, playing dead, etc.) 4 player co-op should also be good and tbh i think the visuals look lovely on the newest screens. can't wait, always been looking forward to this title!

I have to agree with a few other people and I don't see why people are hating on this game either when it hasn't even come out yet. Of course Haze doesn't sound as impressive as Killzone 2 or Resistance 2, but it's a PS3 exclusive and every PS3 owner that likes FPS should be all over this game and give it a chance.
I'm still looking forward to Haze and the Campaign in Haze is what I'm most excited about and the Nectar abilities. The whole Nectar concept is something new in FPS games and it's good to see some innovation in a FPS because so many FPS games seem to feel and look very generic.

idk if i want this game anymore. i'm not being a hater, i'm just not interested anymore.
i WANTED this game so badly, but now i'm not that interested anymoer. i'm just starting to get tired of all these delays, and of all the same features. Hopefully they've come out with new features that they just haven't spilled the beans on... I'm mean, look how long they have had to work on this game with all the delays and everythng.
I think i'm probably just going to wait till R2 & KZ2!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Can't wait for this game, I'll be all over it like a fat kid on a cup cake, when its released. i have a feeling that this game is going to be great. Why are people saying that HAZE can't compete with R2 or KZ2, they don't need to compete, there all ps3 exclusives, just buy all three.

I played Killzone and thought it fun, but too much of the same. THAT is the average one. "This guy is strong with big guns and this person is fast and stealthy with little guns, etc." That screams average. Haze, on the other hand, has all kinds of thing NEVER featured before like stealing guns, using nectar, and having 2 different sides that are balanced but COMPLETELY different.
As for Battlefield Bad Company, I can't say the same. It looks special.
Resistance 2: Good story and awesome weapons. Add in ADS and I'll be happy. -
