Hirai: 1.2 million PS3’s sold in Europe over Xmas

Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. President and CEO Kazuo Hirai announced today that the company has sold 1.2 million PlayStation 3 consoles throughout European during the 2007 Christmas period.

Speaking to Bloomberg, Hirai, who replaced former SCEI President Ken Kutaragi in November 2006, hinted that it is still possible for the firm to sell its predicted 11 million units worldwide by March 31, 2008.

"We haven’t made any conclusion whether we have to give it up. It depends on how aggressively dealers buy our PS3 inventory”, said Hirai.

"We want to promote games only available for PlayStation 3 – the introduction of the 40 gigabyte model is in line with that strategy", he continued.

According to the Bloomberg report, however, Analysts expect Sony to sell approximately 8 million PS3 consoles for the year ending March 31, with Microsoft forecast to sell 9.1 million Xbox 360’s, and Nintendo 19 million Wii’s.
