The NPD data (console sales data in the US) for the month of January has just been released with surprising results. Without further adieu:
Total Hardware Units: 1,227,000
Nintendo Wii: 274,000
Nintendo DS: 251,000
PLAYSTATION 3: 269,000
Xbox 360: 230,000
PlayStation Portable: 230,000
As you can see, the Wii unsurprisingly took the top honor of best-selling console once again, while the PlayStation 3 managed to surpass the Xbox 360 by a decent margin of 39,000 units. Additionally, the gap between the Wii and the PS3 was a measly 5,000 units; a far cry from the hundreds of thousands gaps seen during several months last year.
The PlayStation 3 was the only console to outperform its expected sales numbers, as it was predicted to sell 209,300 units, but actually sold 28.52% more than that amount. All other hardware sales were under their respective predicted amount of units.
"Coming off a great holiday sales season we see strong momentum behind PS3 in 2008, and feel confident about the year ahead," commented Jack Tretton, CEO, Sony Computer Entertainment America. "We have an exceptionally diverse lineup of exclusive games, from Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, Metal Gear Solid 4 and Resistance 2 to more mainstream games such as LittleBigPlanet and SingStar. Beyond that, we have Blu-ray emerging as the de facto high def standard, the developer community is hitting their stride, consumers are recognizing the tremendous value and innovative services such as PlayStation Home are all in the works, so this is definitely shaping up to be a breakthrough year for us."

While it is suprising that the PS3 outsold the 360, it has been predicted by many gamers for a year now.
Nintendo's issue is that they can't get that system on the shelf fast enough. It is a shame that after a year, people still have to wait over a month to strike lucky in finding a Wii. If they were able to get more on the shelf, they could certainly increase the sale of a system already selling great. It worries me though. With them targeting many who could be categorized as non-gamers or casual gamers, I do not see how you can expect them to wait much longer for the system. After a while, it would not suprise me if many say "forget it". Once more, Brawl seems to be the last of the heavyweights for Nintendo on this new system. Now, they will be getting Monster Hunter III and yes other games will come along, but if you don't put out the games for your "hardcore gamers" and you don't put out the system fast enough for the "casual gamers" and usually "non gamers", sales will fall eventually.
My only concern with the 360 is whether or not this rumor is true about the 360 with the HD DVD player built in. They already have the extension and I cannot see them going through putting out a system like that without the developers utilizing the memory from the HD DVD. I just hope that those who purchased the system are not completely left out to dry with having to buy yet another extension or a whole new system. I admit that I prefer Sony's systems, but I would not want something like that to happen to me, so I will not wish it on anyone else.
This is good news for Sony, because the only true complaint about the system was price and lack of games. The 360 went through a similar problem with the library in its first year. Then, it hit stride. We have yet to see Kindgom Hearts III, Metal Gear Solid 4, God of War 3 Gran Tarismo 5, Tekken 6, Jak and Daxter, Final Fantasy and Killzone 2(Which looks to be much better than the first). There is a world wide appeal, I think, for atleast 5 of those titles and two of them have the potential to match Halo 3 type sales. I have spoken to some people who are literally waiting until Metal Gear Solid comes out to get their PS3. Once some of these titles come out, we will see where everyone stands.

Uhm... why didn't he mention killzone 2 x_x?? Seems like everyone has given up hope on it. It's become the MGS of release dates. bein pushed farther and farther back. Watch. Fall, it won't show. Even if it does, it may tank because resistance promises so much more... I really wanted killzone 2 to be a hit, but if everyone else is giving up hope....
Killzone 2 had the perfect chance to launch around april and march. NOTHING EXCLUSIVE is out for those months. But come the summer, everyone's going to play MGS. Come fall, everyone's going to play Resistance and little big planet. Come winter? Its best chance is winter. If they push it to next year around this time, it'll be all but forgotten.

The article is very misleading: "Additionally, the gap between the Wii and the PS3 was a measly 5,000 units; a far cry from the hundreds of thousands gaps seen during several months last year." With Sony and MS consoles there are an equal number left on the shelves, whereas the Wii is sold out, and DS is scarce too. If Nintendo could make em' fast enough the Wii figure would more than triple. PS3 is no competition for Wii, but it's good to see the US finally buying more PS3 than 360s... How much of this is because of 360 market saturation (it's been on sale a year longer) or switching due to the "red ring" is unknown I guess.

Why do people say the numbers would be that much higher for wii if they made more. i guess in some areas they are sold out, but other than december, they didn't sell out here for wiis, i bought mine a few months back, i called one EB, they didnt have any, i called a second one and they had 7 of them, said they had some available for a few months... wii's are not hard to find here, i guess they are elsewhere?

look's like sale's figures in the us are pretty tight, but i see that there are still alot of yankees buying crapbox just because it's an americain made machine, if europe or france made a §hitty console like the 360 i still wouldn't buy it, i prefere to have the console which has the best games to other and that's the PS3, yaeh baby yeah!!!!

The PS3 has finially found it's fuel tank :P They're coming out with better and better features, updating the PS3 quite a bit with each firmware update, offering much more DLC and have the biggest library of massive games coming this year than any competition. Not to mention, Sony is finially taking a stab and saying "we're here to stay, we're gonna rawk your world" where as this time last year they were in the position of "Ahh it's not that... much... is it?... we've got motorstrom...!"

@dassureth
Same her in the UK where I live. And there were plenty of Wii's after the restock a week before christmas. Many stores were sold out weeks leading up to christmas mainly because ebay sellers had bought the shelves. So as the stores had none, ebay had thousands for sale. So this increased demand as parents everywhere couldn't find one so they were panick bidding on ebay.
