ChartGet has come up with some rather disappointing sales data for Japanese giant Square Enix, confirming that the publisher is down 74 per cent on its total units sold through 2008 in comparison to last year.
While some may attribute these results to a lack of overall releases in comparison to 2007, it is interesting to note that the publisher did not release a single title in Japan for the PlayStation 2 or PlayStation 3 throughout the entire year thus far, while the Wii managed one.
This begs the question: "Can Square Enix collect on the goods without the Sony and Nintendo brand loyalty?"
Some may argue the statistics and applaud SE for moving towards a multiplatform objective, but at what cost does this come? You can also argue install base and potential buyers within a multiplatform world, but when push comes to shove, the numbers seem to indicate that without the Sony and Ninty faithful, Square Enix sales seem to dwindle.
This will all be put to the test once the company releases one of 2009’s killer games, namely RPG Final Fantasy XIII. Exclusive to PS3 in Japan, the game has the potential to sway a lot of opinions if the sales are successful enough to prove this perspective.
Let us know what you think below.

MY MY MY WHAT A TANGLED WEBVY WEAVE. my have the tables turned. they betray us we dont support their games. Until they stop making these garbage games and keep their rpgs on the ps3 this will continue. xbots dont care about rpgs because what makes xbobts care about shooters. they could care less about final fantasy being on the 360. All they care about is that its not our exclusive. Soon square will learn that them 400 million dollar checks wont matter because they are not making any profits from multi plats. The 4 billion dollar profits they are getting from being a ps3 exclusive will make those little checks be minor and insignifigant

You guys are so biased and stupid you look like retards to anyone who isn't a fanboy. Their sales are down in Japan for 2 reasons:
1) They haven't released anything on the large consoles for a while. It's been discussed before, so I shouldn't need to go into detail.
2)The 360 isn't as popular in Japan as the rest of the world. So they'll lose sales in Japan, but at the same time get more money worldwide, seeing as how 360 sales are higher than PS3 sales nearly everywhere else.
Even you guys aren't retarded enough to believe that Japanese sales>Everywhere else's sales... Right?
As for those saying that noone with a 360 cares about RPGs, shut up with your stupid stereotypes. I could say everyone with a PS3 is a wapanese Narutard who only has it for JRPGs and so they can be like the Japanese with their sales. That's your stereotype, and by the way your obsessing over Japanese sales I'd say it's pretty accurate.
And if you looked at numbers you'd notice there are more RPGs on the 360 then the PS3.
Get your heads out of your crappers, the noose won't get around your lard if we try if from the feet so we need to use your heads to help you kill yourselves. God knows you can't do it yourself.
