The latest Media Create data has revealed that Sony’s PlayStation 3 console has managed outsell the Wii and Xbox 360 for its third consecutive week in Japan.

Sony’s black behemoth shifted just north of 50,000 units for the period September 15-21, surpassing sales of both Nintendo and Microsoft’s latest home consoles, which sold 16,698 and 4,965 units each, respectively.

As with previous weeks, the only system to eclipse PS3’s efforts was the DSi, which sold just over 66,000 units during the same period. PSP also turned in another solid performance, with sales rising by over 2,500 compared to the previous week. See below for the full hardware sales chart.

01 Nintendo DSi - 66,073
02 PlayStation 3 - 51,055
03 PlayStation Portable - 21,073
04 Nintendo Wii - 16,698
05 Nintendo DS Lite - 13,555
06 Xbox 360 - 4965

Don't worry, look at the August NPD numbers.  The PS3 slim had only 1-2 weeks of being out there and the increase in sales was very noticeable.  September will be very good for the PS3.  Not a single 360 nor Wii game can hold a candle to the upcoming PS3 exclusives, led by Uncharted 2 and GoW 3.  I am also very excited for Demon's Soul and whenever White Knight Chronicles comes out in the US.  I just love RPGs.

    • 11:31am EDT - September 26th, 2009

@14: The Slim wasn't out in August (although some stores sold it early).  The August NPD numbers were increased because of the price cut in the final week or two of the PS3 Fat models (80GB and 160GB).  The September numbers should blow away the August numbers as it includes a full month of the new Slim.

The Wii lost steam in Japan months ago. Even Nintendo commented on it. Fads die quicker over there.

    • 6:06pm EDT - September 26th, 2009

This late in the console wars, these numbers aren't exactly wow... but the ratios are more expected. If the other consoles had higher sales earlier it means they have a large install base. These new larger sales for the PS3 are most likely people purchasing their third console, not their first. I mean it IS great, but not remarkable.

    • 6:23pm EDT - September 26th, 2009

Sony once said they weren't going to be successful overnite with the PS3 and that they had a ten year plan, from their perspective it isn't all that late in the console war. Look at the PS2, it still successful and it came out when, late 2001, 2002? When the time comes for MS and Nintendo (if they choose to) to release a more powerful system, Sony won't have to.

And if there was any question about who won the last console war?  PS2!!!

    • 11:13pm EDT - September 26th, 2009

I wonder if these sales for Japan are counting sales on military bases too?  Ever since the price drop of the PS3, M$ has been slashing Elite prices by 50 bucks, and the pro model as well.  Of course its just temporary, but the 360 stack has not budged in nearly 3 weeks.

Good to see the ps3 taking off, and good on sony for sticking to their guns with a 10 year plan.  The Wii seems to be stalling already after what 3 years?

This site contiues to make me laugh.  No great articles, decent reviews, and every other post is how Sony is ousting the competition.  As Seinfeld would say, "We get it, ok?  Your doing very well."  Stop posting about the numbers...and start writing and producing better articles.

who cares about japan, what about here in the US? Thats what counts. Japan is about the size of a state (in fact some states are bigger).

    Japanese developers do.

@14 You're correct, my bad.  It was just the reduced "fat" PS3s.

@35 Wow, US ignorance showing up again.  Japan is the world's 2nd largest economy and Tokyo is the world's largest metropolitan area so yes, Japan matters and a lot.

Damnn, beaten to the top by the crappy DSi >:(

Obviously japan is a very vital spot for sony, as they can get a vague Idea of what is selling over there, and hopefully reflect it over here in europe (and americas)
