Sony announced through a press release today that the Sony Computer Entertainment and Sony Online Entertainment departments will finally be merging. The two companies will still remain largely independent from one another, but Kaz Hirai will now be heading up both departments. President John Smedley will now be reporting to Hirai directly. These changes are expected to take place on April 1, no joke though.
The opportunity presented to both companies seems to be nothing but positive as both Hirai and Smedley agree. Hirai was quoted as saying, "...excited to be able to work with SOE even more closely, as online games and services become a more integral part of the PS3 entertainment experience. This new structure will allow us to take full advantage of the extensive breadth of expertise of the two companies and increase our range of exciting entertainment offerings to our consumers."
Smedley seemed to be on the same page as expected, "...thrilled to become a part of the incredible team that has made PlayStation 3 the premier platform for next generation online gaming."
With the upcoming title, The Agency, it seems like this is going to be a great partnership not only in the near future but in the long-term future as well.

Is it me or is Kaz slowly taking over the Sony empire? username is my psn id
Okay now bring the games out on time and also need more exclusives only to PS3.
@BlueRevolvuR
Thanks for pointing that out, luckily Kaz seems alright
psn id: gingo... this is a good merging as SOE have a lot of good titles that could work very well on psn
i just hope that Kaz wont bail out the boat in the middle of the trip like Bald Phill did...Go Go Go to the top Kaz
So was this part of Phil's responsibilities or what? If that was the case Sony is making this move only to save money. Sony needs to work on GETTING HOME OUT and adding more digital content to PSN. Sony still needs to catch-up with XBL if they want to sell more consoles!
Other than Everquest I dont think SOE has ever created ANYTHING of merit. that fact that The Agency looks even remotely interesting is unheard of with their track record. Hopefully they move further in the direction SCEI rather than SOE.
sony just taping into online as sone as home kicks in sparks will be flying cause you gona get great service not like xbox360 charging $49.99 not that im saying ther live sucks but freaking advertismen im sick of it where in advertismen is what pays for the service
Hopefully this will reduce SOE's suckishness.
As long as Kaz doesn't go the way of Harrison, Jaffe, and Barlog, I'll be happy.
who cares. just get the job done
why would there be a joke on april 1st? (sarcasm of course)
I'd prefer Phil stayed on and Kaz left. Anyway I agree with a few of the earlier posts and hope that SOE can start making games that dont suck so much. Maybe buying a good game company with a good track record would be a smart start. Why not take GTA franchise and create something on that. If they have the Rockstar team in place it could be great.
@BlueRevolvuR
No kidding,First he took Phil's position,and now he's the head of both SCEI AND SOE,but it's not exactly a bad thing,he has had a VERY positive impact on the ps3,ever since he took Kutaragi's position.
Merging means something guys, right?
