(continued from previous page) ...clan as yet, we have got our first look at some of the community-based and clan options that will be available on its February release. You can create a clan and invite people to join and there’s also a clan leaderboard showing the top ten teams. Additionally, you can also create tournaments, from a 1 vs. 1 fight to the death, right up to a 16 vs 16 clan match. The tournament and clan system is sure to create some fierce competition and we understand that in the final version they'll also be multiple leaderboards so we'll be able to see who are best individual players and the top guns in each of the specific game modes.
As far as gameplay goes, Killzone 2 plays very much like any traditional multiplayer shooter, with its pace laying somewhere between Rainbow 6 and Call of Duty. The lack of a cover system certainly helps to keep the action flowing and you can run, duck, lie down, lob grenades, re-load and switch weapons intuitively.
The user interface is pretty much what you'd expect, but does its job effectively, with a map that sits in the top left corner showing ‘friendlies’ as green and enemies as red. When you die you can choose multiple spawn areas that are indicated on your screen by real-time camera feeds. It comes in handy for double-checking that enemies aren't lurking around ready to spawn kill you - this happens a lot!

The weapons feel meaty, the controls feel tight and the maps are designed in a way to encourage tactical play, with numerous buildings to dash in and out of, narrow alleyways for ambushing, open areas for, er, getting shot, stairwells to throw grenades down to unsuspecting attackers, rooftops and balconies to snipe from and plenty of places to hide, which are ideal for spawn camping (uh,oh). Of course, aside from some excellent level design, what makes Killzone 2 all the more interesting and sets it apart from similar shooters is that all of this traditional multiplayer stuff that we've become accustomed to in other shooters is complemented by the deep class-based system and some of the unique features in the game, such as being able to place sentry bots around the maps or donning a cloak to make you invisible.
There are also a few more unique features worthy of a mention. During the game, you can jump into the menu and invite players to join you in a four-man squad. If you're the person who sets up the squad your teammates can re-spawn in your position every time they get killed. Its' just another of the many clever additions that go towards making Killzone 2 the tactically compelling shooter that we’d hoped for.
Furthermore, Killzone 2 will be the first game in which the host can switch game modes instantly, in-game without a re-set. We started off a standard 32 player team deathmatch on the larger Market map, but as the numbers dwindled and the players dropped out and we found ourselves just wandering around in that hope that we'd bump into one of the 6 players left in this huge area. The host asked if we wanted to switch modes and immediately, whilst we were actually walking up a stairwell, without even a hint of any loading time, we were straight into a game of 'Search and Hold', a variant of siege. Although it’s a feature that you'd think wouldn't have much impact on the multiplayer experience, it's actually turned out to be a welcome addition that has made our experience more enjoyable and varied.
Whilst the options, features and deep class-based system are highlights of Killzone 2's multiplayer, the gameplay hasn't been compromised one bit. Killzone 2 is shaping up to be much more than another run-of-the-mill shooter. It not only looks better than any multiplayer game we've played, but it already bears all the hallmarks of a game that will keep us hooked right throughout 2009.

Thanks for this PSU. The game is sounding absolutely BOSS and is the fast tactical shooter I have been waiting for after CoD4 got stale. Hopefully if they keep all of the great things from the first game and implement all of this then we'll have practically the best FPS of all time on our hands. Time to get excited guys.
A couple questions.
1. You say the pace lies somewhere between CoD and Rainbow 6. As I believe it is the pace that makes or breaks an FPS, and personally much prefer faster pace like CoD4 than slow, like Resistance or Halo, do you feel it is optimized for the gameplay?
2. Can you tell us of the controlls. Are they fully customisable, and what is set as default? If aim isn't L1 I might cry.
Thanks. -

its a pity they felt the need to take out the lean/peek feature. That could only have added to this game, and it doesn't slow up game play....camping does...lol.
Im glad to see you can prone at least....I actually never expected that.
And to their benefit, they allow user created rooms.....thats always a positive in my book. I just hope they added other options such as muting people etc.

This game is a chance for the psn community to shine, in terms of the multiplayer it is great, probably better than COD4, This is a top quality fps, which we have all been waiting for. I have been playing the beta and i would expect all fps fans to consider pre-ordering the game, it is sick. I can say no more, don't be aprehensive, get it at launch and prepare for one hel of a ride.

this game is going to awesome. It has everything. The game looks really chunky(feels nice and right) and am so deligthed to hear that there's a class system with exp and everythin g. I think adding small rpg elemnts make shooters way more fun and playable. Awesome, definetly getting this one!

L1 is the aim button and it is toggled on and off, there is like no lag though i spot some slowdown and i am disconnected at least once a day but they seem like nothing more thatn beta bugs
The automated turrets that are set up by engineers are destructible but the ones in your base are not(Good thing because it seems to prevent spawn camping 90% of the time)

@TestosteRohne
Almost any online shooter would beat COD4 online if you ask me. That game was so flaming limited that it was extremely user unfriendly to play.
KZ2 will have much the same gameplay which isn't so bad, but it will have the ability to make user created rooms etc. So it doesn't have to have that useless random game crap that was the crux of COD4. Friends invites will work, private games will work and it should be much more fun to play.
Now all we have to see is what other player options it has, like muting players, voting, etc etc.
Not hard at all to beat COD4 online IMO.

Playing the beta and the visuals are outstanding....the way the light streams through a room at time...little stuff that just make you say damn. the game has 6 different loadouts for controls. one exactly like cod4. the game takes a little getting used too...the way the guns shoot...much more realistic than cod4...where no aiming is involved. you definately have to aim and control your aim. my only gripes is the lack of ammo. i have had many many times where i run out of my primary ammo after one good fire fight....and some idiot swoopes in and picks up the dead guys bullets....now i am running around with the magnum. very very frustrating. i don't expect infinate ammo but only two clips of 20 bullets is pretty limited at times. everything else is great.....oh except the rockets...people spamming rockets is what killed the first game...i love running around a corner to get rocketed by a guy at point blank range and he doesn't die. it is a horrible noob weapon that it seems almost everyone picks up. it really ruins a fun battle when you got this one guy spamming rockets everywhere. at least we can turn that off. this is by far the best looking and playing game i have ever tried though.
