Killzone 2 delay "a pure management decision"

Posted on May 20th, 2008 at 18:03 EDT

Back in early January, Killzone 2 was in the top five of our most anticipated PS3 exclusives of 2008 list. That no longer makes sense. As you surely know, Killzone 2 has been delayed to 2009. What you don't know is why -- until now of course.

Ron Eagle, Sr. Manager of PR at SCEA, revealed that the decision to delay the game until February 2009 was purely a managerial one.

"To be clear, there is nothing wrong or causing a delay to the development of [Killzone 2]," said Eagle. "We had to look at the fall calendar with SOCOM, LittleBigPlanet, MotorStorm: Pacific Rift, Resistance 2, plus some PSN titles and make a decision where each game should come out. Killzone 2 was moved to Feb 2009 to make sure we didn’t have three shooters in the marketplace competing for retail dollars during the same holiday season.

"Hope this helps - a lot of times we gamers read delay and think something is wrong, in this case, it was a pure management decision."

It's satisfying to know that Killzone 2 will surely ship next February; far too many games have seen multiple delays as of late. A little extra development time can never hurt either, especially for a title that's already running beautifully. Keep watching PSU for all things Killzone 2.

push back Socom first because killzone 2 is going to be a better game!!

SOCOM has a fan base almost as big as Gran Turismo!  Killzone is the sequel to a weak 7.5 (at best) shooter.  I'll take SOCOM, thank you.  This was a good choice.  You could argue that Killzone 2 was chosen to be delayed because it's the strongest game, though.  So be happy

psn id:gingo.... this was a smart decision because i think resistance and socom would have outsold killzone by a large margin

A PURELY MANAGEMENT DECISION - hmm, let's see ... in the past these have included blatant lies and a severely ticked off fan base.

How can delaying such a hyped game really help.  Surely the market for this game is peaking with so many videos / articles flying around the web.  Making us wait for it is going to kill sales early next year.  SOCOM should be delayed and QA'd to ensure that it lives up to its pedigree & ensure that it's not going to go the same disappointing way as HAZE.

Come on SONY, I get an ulcer every time I hear you pat yourselves on the back for s**tting on your customers over and over again.  Surely one company can't be that blinded by it's own arrogance.

At least your hardware works ... but really SORT the f'n software side of things out.

If it wasn't for WarHawk I would've binned my PS3 ages ago.

Wot ! i take Killzone over Socom.. well havent played Killzone 1 or any Socom buut.. Socom looks pretty generic (no offence i dont wanna start a flamewar XD)

Probably a good choise to spread out the shooters though. We don't wanna cluster too many fps'es up right in a row. Besides, something needs to come out at that time. I'm not sure if it was smart though concidering killzone (With the hype) probably would move more consoles than resistance (since the first was a ps3 game) or socom (being that i hadn't heard of it before entering this site)

i dont really care about delays. i dont really understand why people are crying about it either...

why has everything got to be so rushed nowadays ? why does everyone have to have it early. patience is a virtue. for christ sake its only a game and im sure you have far better things to with your time.

Anyone with a working brain knows that that was the reason, i means look at the line up of shooters coming.  But ofcourse there are those so called bloggers making up and speculating other wise, they never think about the fact that they might end up being the ones that are holding our industry behind

@Jiggiepsu

You are so wrong, I can't think of anything witty to say.  Haze is nothing like Socom.  If ANYTHING is going to be a Haze-like disappointment, it Killzone.  THE GAME WASN'T EVEN THAT GOOD TO BEGIN WITH.  SOCOM actually has something to live up to.

i am going to be buying all the shooters mentioned here. so that kinda makes me happy that it is being spread out because when ever i get a game there seems to be another i want at the same time and attention is taken away from both. but for me i want resistance most then socom then killzone

I think both games look good, and this is a smart choice, I mean look at MS they put all their big hitters out in the first year. Sony is taking their massive games and spreading them out, oh and i have been a socom fan since the first, so for all you people who say its generic or it should be pushed cuz killzone is "better", try and argue with the 25,000 ppl online everynight lol, socom never had less then 10,000 on a night when i played

people make mistakes. Killzone made a mistake with the first one, call of duty made a mistake with the 3rd one, and socom made a mistake with the 3rd one also. the point is that poeple learn from their mistakes, in this case it's developers. i hate when people say that the previous game sucked what will make this better especially xbots. the thing that will make the game better is the more work you put into it and judging by the videos killzone gave us, it looks like they put effort into this game. So STOP HATING

pretty good choice by sony. i know ill be hooked on socom (if the reviews dont suck) and definitly be playing resistance 2 till death. plus extra time for the killzone ppl to work on any faults left in the game

SIgh... I really don't understand people. Tons of ppl here shooting their mouths off as to how good (or horrible) these up coming games are when they havn't even had the chance to even sniff the hands of someone who's played them. You should all just quite your b!tchin and sitback and wait for these games - you paragraphs of words really doesn't phase Sony or involved parties at all.

Good decision and I agree, even though I won't be buying R2 until I pick up RFOM when it drops in price and I won't be getting SOCOM at all.  Too bad for me but it's stupid to think that Guerilla would sacrifice sales for the smaller legion of Killzone followers.  MPR and LBP will hold me over until then.

To anyone still using IE6:  Is PSU or PS3Forums crashing your browser?  Everytime I visit here or the forums using IE6, it drops a Trojan in my computer, then takes up all of my memory (keeping me from using Task Manager), forcing me to restart my computer.  Firefox seems to work fine on PSU and the forums, so I have yet to see if it's my IE6 or if it's server-side, which I assume because I'm not dropping Trojans on myself.

Yeah, I figured as much.  Too much competition and they don't want any of these games to steal from the others.  SOCOM has a bigger fanbase already, Resistance looks like a possible Titan.  Killzone looks wicked, but if you have to make a business decision....you go with the known quantities first, at least as the safe bet.

Killzone 2 will wipe it's butt with socom. Socom is cool and everything, but as far as I have been reading, Killzone 2 is way more annitispate than Socom. I hardly hear anything about Socom. I knew they pushed KZ2 back for this marketing reason anyways. Jus look at all the releases that are coming out this holidays, put 2-2 together, not hard to figure out. They chose to kick back KZ2, because, Sony funded Gurilla $60M to develope KZ2, they need to make most of that profit back. PEACE! PSN I.D- Demented007.

Hmm, Sony's lineup for this year is shrinking as predicted. Oh well, Socom will be a better game anyways. I played the first killzone, and I wouldn't have cared less if they made a sequel or not. The only reason people are hyped about this game in the first place is it's graphics, not because the first one was good. I'm glad I have a good PC to keep me busy while EVERY SINGLE DECENT PS3 game is delayed.

I'm not complaining about the odd delay here or there. I'm complaining about the CONSTANT DELAY OF EVERY GAME because they can't sort their strategy out and failed to provide developers with the support they needed from day one.  Everything they seem to do reveals that they don't have a plan and that everything is reactionary, making decisions like this based on seemingly flimsy pretences.

Oh and for the record ... give me SOCOM over RFOM2 any day.  RFOM was (in my opinion - so you don't have to agree) a load of smelly old cheese, I will give RFOM2 the benefit of the doubt, since they've had time (and indeed extra titles in the interim) to get cosier with the Cell and it's 1000 page tech manual (yes, I have read it - great book, didn't end quite how I'd expected though).
