Kitase: Xbox 360 FFXIII will not compromise PS3 version

Square Enix’s Yoshinori Kitase has reiterated that the developer is committed to offering gamers an ‘equal experience’ for both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of Final Fantasy XIII.
Kitase’s comments come following news that the 360 version of the eagerly anticipated RPG hadn’t entered development until after the PS3 FFXIII demo hit Japanese stores in April.
“The team is targeting to create an equal experience on both the 360 and the PS3, so there are no limitations. For example, right now we’re working on the PS3 version first, and once we’ve completed that we’ll really know how much game there will be to fit onto the Xbox 360 discs,” he told VideoGamer.com.
“So we don’t know how many discs it’ll be housed on for 360, but there won’t be a chance that we’ll compromise anything because, oh it didn’t fit in the 360 discs so we’ll have to take it out of the PS3 version, or vice versa.”
Final Fantasy XIII is due out in Japan later this year, with a North American release arriving in 2010.

@6 No. Learn to understand what you're reading.
@5 No. It seems the PS3 version was long into development when the 360 version was announced. By the look of it, it doesn't appear that the PS3 version is gimped much, if at all, because of 360's hardware. No need for mindless spreading of hatred. Are we in the middle ages, and 360 is the "witch"? Relax and enjoy the games guys.

I'm sorry, but with all due respect to Kitase, by just using simple logic there are only a few possibilities:
1) Both versions are created at the same time, with completely separate compiled code for differing architectures and storage formats. This is the most costly and inefficient way to do it, so it's highly unlikely they are doing it this way from a business standpoint and it's not logistically a probability because they're creating the Japanese PS3 version first. Result of this method would be that the PS3 version would not be gimped, assuming the PS3 development team did not consult with the 360 development team at all. Highly unlikely
2) The Japanese PS3 version is created first and then it's localized for the US PS3 version. It's developed 100% for the PS3 architecture and storage capacity. Chance: Likely. Result: Gimped 360 port (unless they rebuild the code to maximize the 360 architecture, which is more costly but still leaves them with a lesser quality product).
3) The PS3 version is created first, with the 360 limitations in mind and then the game is ported to both platforms after the U.S. localization. Chance: Probable. Result: Both versions are about equal which means the PS3 version is not as good as it could have been.
As you can see, either way, it's not possible for both versions to be equal AND for the PS3 version to be as good as it possibly could have been. They are mutually exclusive results. If the goal is to utilize the PS3 architecture and storage to it's maximum, then the 360 port would have to be the lesser of the two. If the goal is to create equal versions, then one or both versions will have to be sacrificed.

I'm sorry to say that, but FFXIII didn't impress me at all so far. And also you would be a fool to believe what they say.
But there are games on the horizont that look much more promising. One of them rhymes with "DEPARTED".

The xbox 360 version won't affect the playstation 3 version, but the game will offer an equal experience for both versions? A bit of a contradiction there. Maybe he's saying this in terms of graphics?
I definately hope kitase will make a remake of final fantasy VII playstation 3 exclusive so that we won't have to hear square enix's rubbish again.

I'll get the game, but I honestly dont believe him 100%, as long as VERSUS XIII stays exclusive and also pushes the PS3's power then I dont mind.

What the heck, SE has LIED yet again. They just said a few months ago they were working on the 360 version. Now they say they didn't start the 360 version until the PS3 demo hit. Whatever, SE has turned into this lying bogus company and frankly when they say they are offering gamers and equal experience, they just compromised what they said they weren't doing.
SE, you guys are starting to stick out as a bunch of [you know whats].

Simultaneous release for N/A E.U equals compromise.
“So we don’t know how many discs it’ll be housed on for 360, but there won’t be a chance that we’ll compromise anything because, oh it didn’t fit in the 360 discs so we’ll have to take it out of the PS3 version, or vice versa.”
This says it all. They are going to make sure that they don't have to cut anything by ensuring that the game will run on the 360. If they really were "maxing out" the PS3, it would not run on the 360. It is that simple.

is it just me that reads this announcement to mean that the PS3 game will be awesome on a single BD, THEN they have to work out how to make it good on 360 across however many DVD's that will take to fit it all in? i don't see it as a PS3 downgrade, more of a struggle to equal it on 360 when the time comes to port it ! that's how it sounds to me, so stop the hate and look forward to what will be an awesome game, and on PS3 first !

At 20,
some people are angry at the xbox 360 port because 1. the game could've sold more playstation 3s if it stayed exclusive, 2. playstation 3 owners would have to wait longer for the game's release, and 3. people are concerned with the overall quality of the game because of the xbox 360 version.

Bigdoggy a few months ago is when the demo hit.......
If some of you guys actually looked at the screens of the game instead of complaining about shiz 24/7 you would appreciate it alot more, one of the best looking games so far.
It's the exact same situation with MGS Rising which is kinda understandable since it's an action game and MUST be on 1 disc. With this however 3-4 discs is standard and i wouldn't rule out 5 or 6 either tbh.
Kinda funny how know one complains about MGS peace walker just because it's on a Sony machine, cos being on a PSP and the 900mb/1.8gb UMD limitation won't compromise how that game will turn out.......
I'm sure it would have turned out the exact same if it was on the PS3 :D

I think most of you need to read this again, they are talking about disc space and game content, they are saying that both PS3 and XBOX 360 users will have the same FULL experience by having the exact same amount of content on each system even if it means having 10 discs on the 360 even if it's something like a box with a potion that wouldn't quite fit on a DVD but would fit on a Blu-Ray (bit of an exaggeration) they wouldn't leave it out of the 360 version and they wouldn't remove it from thee PS3 version. Unlike with GTA4 where you only get FULL content on XBOX 360. At no point did they mention graphics or processing power

@21, yeah i get those points, but NONE of those have been proven have they??, the game still looks awesome and PS3 WILL get it 1st, at least in Japan, where the 360 won't get it at all ! so we are still better off being PS3 owners (1 disc and released 1st) than being 360 owners (multiple discs and ported after) as far as getting FFXIII is concerned IMHO, i will get it day one without a single thought for the 360 version thanks.

Equal games = compromising the PS3 version. The PS3's capable of rendering more and storing more on the Blu-ray Disc. Look at Uncharted and Uncharted 2, nothing comes close on Xbox 360, that's CELL+RSX rendering and 360 can't match it, still hasn't matched Drake's Fortune.
That 1080p, very high quality FMV in the FFXIII Japanese demo? Now we know publishers target 2-3 DVD's MAX otherwise it's very costly, there's no way they're cramming video that high a quality, for a whole game on 3 DVD's.

At 25,
Atleast my first point about the game selling more playstation 3s is factual. Look at the sales from april when the demo was released. That could've been us sales, but that will never happen thanks to square enix making the decision of bringing the game to the xbox 360. The problem I see them is that they're not thinking outside the box. Instead of looking at sales alone and compare it to xbox 360 sales and predict that the game won't sell as much as it should of, they should think that big exclusives will move more consoles.
What's more concerning is whether the inevitable final fantasy VII remake be exclusive to playstation 3 or not. Not that I don't want xbox 360 owners play the game, but it would be nice to see playstation 3 sales rise. I know this has nothing to do of what I said, but just like to get that off my chest.

@9 i think you're the one who needs to understand something. in the past, square said that FFXIII will use 100% of the PS3's power, but yet say that the PS3 and 360 version will opperate the same. so basicly, they are saying that the PS3 will use 100%, and the 360 will use, what, 150% of it's power? it makes no sense, simular to your comment

IMHO, the US release is already compromised considering we have to wait for the xbox version to be done it will ship here.

The compromise is that they'll have a PS3 version done long before a 360 version, but they'll still have to wait to release the PS3 version in regions that aren't Japan. That is a fsking compromise.
I'm still buying it, of course.

Thats all i wanted to hear,so long as its 3 or 4 dvds on the 360 it might be ok but still,ps3 is capble of better grahics and better A.I.
Also again they just confirmed there ripping ps3 and ff fans off by delying the release till 360 version is complete, thats disgusting and its being evil to fans for no reason, square should of been mature enuff not to agree to that childish contract clause from MS.its clear this game was never meant for the 360.why dont MS pi$$ off and find there own talent instead of waiting for others to do the work for them, company must be in a terrible state..no talent at all.

If the graphics were dumbed down for the 360 version I don't see much of an issue about that b/c they still wow me. This looks like it will be a great game and I will get it for my PS3.

I am w/ #12 on this because as a programmer and trying to work on my own stuff, I know that SE are lying but not bout the disc situation cause yeah I am sure they will get everything on the BD and DVDs but the quality and other stuff in the game isnt gonna be TOP and BEST of PS3 cause if your making it for one system first then you have to go back and port then thats 2x as muxh work so they aren't gonna fully make it for the PS3 even if it has been worked on for so long as a PS3 exclusive at first but just cause that announcement was made while back doesn't mean that wasn't in work even further back and just wasn't official. So I am sure that the game is comprised quality wise cause they don't wanna have to do A LOT of reworking on the port to get it to work on the 360 and if they did, it wouldn't be ready spring 2010 like their saying itd be more like winter 2010. Regardless I still plan to buy it cause I care bout games being bought for the PS3. Juts hope Sony is smart enough to deal w/ a potential FF7 remake and ensure its exclusivity to Sony and if not might as well say good bye to top console this gen.

all you ppl are pissed off at square enix, b/c they werent being loyal to playstation and went multiplatform? u all should be mad at sony for not offering this company money to be exclusive. Thats what it takes these days. And thats what micogay did. They threw out a bone to let the dog's catch it. Game company's are out to not be FANBOYS but MAKE MONEY. THINK ABOUT IT.

I don't believe a word he says regarding this multiplatform title.
How can they say they will not compromise anything but they may have to take something out of the PS3 version if they can't fit it onto 360 discs?
Also if this game is only 3 discs on the 360 version then I will be disapointed. Lost Odyssey was 4 discs and it is only around 40 or 50 hours long.
