Lombardi: Valve is still 'up on the idea' of PS3 development

Valve Corporation’s Doug Lombardi has stated that the company is still very much "up on the idea" of developing for Sony’s PlayStation 3 console, though noted the firm must first rack up a dedicated team of coders to work on the system.
Speaking to Joystiq in London this week, Lombardi commented, "If you look at The Orange Box -- PC: 96 on Metacritic, 360: 96 on Metacritic, PS3 like... 84 or something. That's not even close to where we are right now with the 360 and PC and the reason is people."
He added that "we have to get people under our roof who are dedicated, talented PS3 guys and then all bets are off. We can take the same sort of strides and get the quality out of the box and offer the same support post-launch on that platform, as well."
Quizzed on whether Valve was in the process of scouting out new talent, Lombardi concluded: "Valve is always looking to hire people. So yeah, definitely."
Let us know your thoughts on Valve in the comments section below.

Considering the Orange Box was handled by EA should they honestly be surprised by how sloppy it was on the PS3?
Valve needs to get their heads outta their rear & start getting some work done

Too bad their developers aren't good enough to develope for PS3. Either way I don't like any of their games.

Pfft...they make a lot of noise to promote an "easier to develope for (for them)" console like the 360, but when it proves that their promotional stunts do not have the effect they want, they make U-turn.
They left it a bit late to start moaning about lack of staff = lack of quality.
If they were not so busy BSing people with their 360 (PC architecture) promotional garbage, then they would have been better prepared and producing top quality titles and making money from them today.
As I said when all this negativity from people like them was 1st being spewed, "If they invest in the console now ( then, at that time) then they would reap the rewards later".
Their loss & no excuses will cover for that fact.

Doesn't matter. I'm still not going to buy their games, not after that crap that was the Orange Box, I take into consideration that EA developed it, but man was that game fill with glitches and lags. No way. Unless is Left 4 Dead...na not even...they will never see a single dime from me...especially that dochebag Greg Newell or watever his first name is. That pompous a55 bag went on to say a year ago that sony was better of eliminating the PS3 because it was not going to go anywhere and he would never develop on such a terrible machine. What an idiot.

Lombardi, Lambardi.....(trying to think). Hay. Isn't that the same guy that said they might release Left for Dead on the PS3, then said its not going to happen? I don't think LFD2 is going to come to the PS3 anytime soon. Maybe HL2 ep.3, but I wouldn't be suprised if that didn't happen either.

Yeah, first they say that PS3 is a piece of crap.
And now they realized that they are missing 20 millions potential costummers and sudenly they say, yeah. We are in search for a team that can developp on PS3.
You know lombardi, it's okay if valve can't developp on PS3. We know it's a console that is hard to developp on. It's complicated, only talented teams can get a working game from it.
But there are a lot of people who can handle it and make us great games. So we don't really need your games. You don't have to rush on the ps3 for us poor ps3 players who can't play Lol4.
No seriously we don't want it anymore. So even if you make it, we have plenty of other games to wait for.

@17 - Valve.
Grow up people. It's their company and they can do what they want with it. This is no different than Naughty Dog only developing for ps3. I'm sure none of you complain about that. And in essence, what they've said is they don't want to produce some sub-par game. They only want to release something that they know will be top quality.
Everyone moans when EA do a bad port (which tbh, is sloppy but not terrible), then they moan when Valve say they want to relase something which will be of a very high standard.
Stop being so petty. Hopefully if they do release something made with a dedicated team the people who are saying "Won't buy that crap anyways" stay true to that and don't buy it, missing out on a great expericence in doing so. So stick to your guns people.

Have to agree with 20. Valve can do whatever they feel like. So they've left the PS3 out of their development for titles like Left 4 Dead? It really is no skin off my nose. There are many companies who'll stay with certain formats and Sony have their own. Valve can do as they please. I appreciate their honesty because they're not the first company to exclaim the PS3 as being difficult to develop for and it's always been an issue hence why they've stuck with what they've known. There are many examples in life where taking a risk isn't worth the trouble and you're better off with what you're actually good at.
I'd rather take a console exclusive than a badly ported title anywho (says he who bought Lost Planet on the PS3 and actually enjoyed it anyway, minus the slowdown sometimes)

@20
You have to realise that if Valve just said it was not within their capability at that time to develop for the PS3 then no one would have had an issue. What you see here are consequences to Valve issuing thoughtless & idiotic statements. And don't claim that because one person from the company was a muppet that it doesn't reflect on the entire company. People pull SONY for stupid statements all the time even if its from one person.
To claim now that they don't want to release a sub-par game and are looking for developers completely contradicts their previous stance on PS3 develpoment. If they kept their mouths shut & worked on getting the developers instead of ignoring the PS3, they would be raking in the cash from quality game sales at this time.
To claim gamers are being petty while backing a company that was beyond petty is silly. Think about what you are saying. While I agree that there is far too much emotion over a console, I can also understand it.
The negativity from day1 surrounding the PS3 initiated by the media, naysayers & companies like this seriously annoyed me...regardless of the consoles capabilities.

Yes, and they basically took a wii over all of us for two years.
So we can do what we want too.
More than likely, they'll want to give us a stupid Luls4Dumb game. I got talked into buying that stupid POS for PC, and I haven't played it but once. Gah, what a waste of code and MY money.
When they get their act and their attitude together and finally produce a good game, I might give them the time of day again. Maybe. It depends on my attitude.

looks to me like they realize the PS3 is getting popular and will be VERY popular by years end. They want a piece of the pie. I think they should be denied the piece. Their games have been garbage since the Half Life 2 series. UPDATE YOUR ENGINE. Left 4 Dead looks like butt crack and plays like it, and we don't want it. I seriously hoep nobody buys anything they release on the PS3.

PS3 is getting the crap end of the stick, as always, once PS3 loses whatever remaining third party exclusive to 360, it will continue too, soon third party developers will stop making PS3 games, like Valve and Activision.

Well you need to developed PS3 games at the same time as the X-poop games or you won't be backed by the PS3 players. We hate when we don't get the same material as the X-poox and they get it a year earlier. It's like spitting in our face and trying to still our milk money latter. Also the PS3 is a better system; so you can make better games for it.

They need to get rid of that fat piece of garbarge Newell, his mouth is what is shutting PS3 players off of wanting their games on the PS3. When they get someone shoving jelly donuts down their gullet talking about how horrible one console is, it tends to make people bitter. Bad PR if you ask me, but it seems that Lombardi has the right idea.

@24 - I see your point. I guess i'm being bias myself actually, as i have great respect for valve.
@28 - Not trying to start an arguement, but just because you didn't enjoy L4D doesn't mean it's not a good game, and to say they haven't produced anything good... half life games are amoung the best ever. But again you're right in saying you guys can do what you want too and i understand people may feel hurt by the lack of support they are giving the ps3 and therefore react negatively to valve. But don't shun them, if they make Half Life 3 for both ps3 and 360, it will be worth playing.
Like i said, i ended up reacting a bit emotionally myself, lets all cuddle?

@32 Valve has never supported the PS3 period. So they can't stop making games for a console if they never made a game for the console in the first place. Activision will probably not stop supporting the PS3 because of a silly price cut. That's throwing away a severe portion of their profits.

They are still rehashing there damn CS, DoD, and TFC style games. Where is the new stuff, where are the games that actually look different. Talk about milking a certain style of game, Valve is just as bad as EA.
I've played Valve games, they were awesome at the time, but they have yet to bring anything new to the table. lots of people liked that stupid puzzle game but for me it was nothing more then a revamped Half-life game with no guns or enemies really. bleh. they can keep it on the 360, Even if it does come here, it wont justify a $60 purchase.
Nice try Valve but shove your repeated bs games up your [you know what].
