Nearly a year ago it was confirmed that Sony Pictures Entertainment was interested in the idea of creating a motion picture based off of the Metal Gear Solid series. Since then, the proposition has gone cold and pretty much fell behind that desk in the corner office. Now it appears to be surfacing back up as news breaks on whom the potential director for the movie might be.
This comes from ComingSoon.net which reports that during an interview at the Sony Pictures premier of 21, they uncover the notion that Sony is seeking out Kurt Wimmer, the director of Equilibrium to possibly write and direct the MGS film. With Metal Gear Solid 4 coming out this June, the MGS movie is surely expected to flesh out.
For years now many have dished out their opinions about the possibility of a MGS movie and how it could translate over to the big screen.
Sony Pictures Vice Chairman, Yair Laundau, expresses his belief by saying:
"It's a very cinematic game, it really lends itself to movie-telling. But the question is, 'How do you translate Snake's experience into a full arc that conforms to what audiences expect on the large screen?"
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is expected to release worldwide this year June 12. We will keep you updated on the latest surrounding the game or the film.

With a game as big as Metal Gear Solid 4 and just the legendary status of the Metal Gear Solid franchise, this Metal Gear Solid movie needs to be directed by someone like Steven Speilberg, Michael Bay, Peter Jackson or some other well known movie directors that have completed big budget films. And this Metal Gear Solid movie needs actors with some star status.... I'm thinking that this MGS movie might turn out something like the Hitman movie and be just an average movie with medicore actors, but I guess we'll have to wait and see.

ok.. all i'm saying.... is who the F is gonna play Snake... i don't think there is an actor out in the world that can sound like David Hayter... and i can't possibly imagine Snake not sounding like himself... Snake's character is probably one of the hardest characters to act out... or any of the characters at that.... the game is just that god@mn deep... and if SPE really knows how huge the MG franchise is... i suggest putting some serious freaking money into that sh1t and blow out the freakin water... cuz i will be paying to see that sh1t several times god@mnit... and i want perfection... at least in 1 thing damnit... just 1...

Greyfox, I don't follow your link between a story's depth and acting.
This movie has obvious potential, but it's easier to see that potential being filly harnessed with the use of the right tools. These tools, as others have said, would be well-known, successful directors, appropriate actors, and just a good crew in general. This, of course, goes without saying. I'm more interested in the unkown background of this movie's possible future success than the players on the forefront.I don't think that I'll be as interested as most will be in this movie's release, though. I'm one of the failures who's always owned a Sony console that has never picked up a copy of Metal Gear Solid. I think I was too young when the first one came out, anyway.

i think the metal gear story is great but way too screwy to make into a 2 hour movie, even if it only covers one game.

As a big MGS fan. i kinda DON'T want an MGS movie. Well. that is if it just stays pretty underground like say, Advent Children, then that would be nice.
^@ CB4. yeah. He would be perfect for the role. i couldn't imagine them not picking anyone else. because if you aren't going to get the voice down perfect then at least get the guy who is was based off of.

I feel that, while the games are awesome, it's not a good idea to make a Metal Gear Solid film. Very, VERY few games manage to really capture the games they were based on. Only Silent Hill, Advent Children and (to a degree) Tomb Raider succeeded in doing so. I say rather just leave the franchise to the gaming world where its been consistently awesome than to release a big budget, yet lackluster film.

I have 4 actors in mind that could play Snake. Hugh Jackman, Jason Statham, Vin Diesel or Daniel Craig. Also 5 Directors in mind. Ridely Scott (Gladiator & Black Hawk Down), Martin Campbell (Casino Royale), Michael Bay ( The Island & Bad Boys), Sam Raimi (Spider-Man) & John Woo (Face Off & MI 2)

Kurt Wimmer... Never heard of him.
I really want David Hayter to play as Snake. Who the f$ck should else? David hayter sounds like Snake and looks like Snake. David Hayter IS Snake!!!
Put David on the role and keep Uwe Boll the hel' out of this! And put Kojima on this! If he says he's only 5% games and much more movie, then the movie would kick Ar$$!
@ Alti
The movie will be shot at Alaska I think it was. And Metal Gear Solid 1 occured in Alaska. So.. ;)
The best choice for making a Metal Gear movie, Shadow Moses. :D

why not team up john woo and ridely scott, but i deffinatly think that kojima should play a part in supervising this production and why not participate in the script and directing, mgs is HIS creation after all. Frankly i don't see which actor could play snake, for the physique and age comparison why not liam neeson, but i'm not quit sure the voice would fit!

If the MGS movie is more like Equlibrium and less like Ultra Violet than it's be kick a$s. The problem with UV was that it was poorly paced and tried to put in too much action at the expense of a coherant storyline. Equlibrilum was successful because it DID have a deep story with room for characters to show growth towards the conclusion.
For MGS the idea has to be from the start to make a trilolgy, start with the general concept of a walking nuclear equiped battle tank. the setting dosent have to be Shadow Mosses but it should incluse many of the enemies encountered there. The next two movies can be conclomerations of all the other elements involved as long as the focus is on Snake and his attempts to stop the Metal Gears and the conspiracies surrounding their proliferation and a long the way combating the various rogues gallery that has come into existance because of them.
With Wimmer in the director's seat I could see them getting Christian Bale for Snake but he's Batman so he might not beable to take on a second "geek role" as a video game character while being a Comic character too.

All i know,is that Kojima needs to be writing the story for the movie, otherwise it'll be crap.
