With all the maturity growth in the videogames business, developers are climbing the hills to ensure that mature audiences receive an experience that matches their age. However, recent statistics shows that the number of M rated games from 2005 to 2007 has halved.
Patricia Vance, President of the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) explains:
"The ESRB also had the biggest year ever in 2007, having assigned 1,563 ratings, a 22% increase over the prior year. And, as you'll see below, 94% of the ratings we assigned were for games appropriate for ages 13 or younger. It's never been easier to find family-friendly games that everyone can play together.
While a handful of M-rated titles tend to garner a majority of media attention, the E (Everyone 6+) rating category continues to dominate. The E category saw the largest increase over last year, accounting for nearly 60% of ratings assigned overall.”
"The M (Mature 17+) category represented 6% of the overall ratings assigned, down from 8% in 2006 and 12% in 2005”, added Vance.
"The E10+ (Everyone 10 and older) and T (Teen 13+) categories accounted for 15% and 20% respectively."
Some of the biggest games of 2008 will be M-rated, such as Resistance 2, Killzone 2, Metal Gear Solid 4, and Grand Theft Auto IV. So we will see how long this trend continues.

i dont care the age ratings aslong as the games R S*** HOT!!!
I think we can thank the Wii for this...
Bring on the hardcore s*** if you ask me.. the Wii is a major player and thats why like 98% of all games to the system are family-friendly. At least the 360 and PS3 add a balance.. at the moment it looks to be about 60%.. thank god for the violent 40.
Took the words right out of my mouth Triple Dk. Nintendo we still love you, but you have forgot about us core fans... Maybe someday well be friends again and you will give me something more then seaseme street...
Actually this is irrelevant, Saw would have gotten an X rating being released in the 80's, maybe the 90's in their current form. this is just showing that ratings are being more laxxed maybe. There are tons of PG-13 movies today that would have recieved an R rating in the 90s or 80's.
no give me AO games or M games please dont get rid of them
the obvious reason is the wii
Wii brought in the E-for everyone crowd so its understandable. Its long been vied that M-games have had prevelance over any rating until this gen. TBH this gen has the most diversity in gaming demographics, innovative gameplay, , new IP's, and so forth and it really is a amazing now that you look at how all three console makers entered this fray.
Console makers are promoting more T games than M seeing as they just released their consoles. It makes sense. They want to get their software sales up as high as possible this early in the game before M rated games come and see theoretically lower sales. Publishers could also be putting the pressure on too, because they want to sell as many copies to an install base as possible.
I think that the T rating has alowed more stuff in, just as D3v1I said, with movie ratings, it is always in motion, always alowing just a little more. Personly I don't like a lot off stuff in the video games I play, so I almost never play M rated games. Yeah maybe the Wii has somthing with this, but I think T games sell the best, just as PG-13 movies sell the best and are so the bigest target.
Most of the best games are M-rated anyway. Thanks anyway Wii.

And what's the deal with AO rating? Why even have that? It's an effective ban, so why not just ban it? There needs to be some kind of system you can go through to get some AO games like the original Manhunt 2.
Someone else already said it, this is basically because people are stupid enough to buy Wiis in massive numbers, and also because Wii is so easy to develop for devs do it for a little easy cash. It's honestly fine with me, ratings don't matter to me, unless they start making only little kid games the whole time. But that's okay as long as we have Epic
No offense, but I'm glad there are E games. Cause too many M games would get old fast, and really fast at that. It's like that saying goes I think it's "too much of a good thing can be bad."
Yep the Wii did it :P
psn id: gingo... i dont really care about ratings of games, it doesn't affect how good or bad the game is
Well I think that it is good that there are more family friendly choices out there, it would be very difficult to have a game like RE5 where all you do is shoot rainbows and hug the "zombies." I think that mature games definitely have their place as long as it is not just extra gore and violence to get some group somewhere angry and get free publicity.
I also agree with D3v1l that the standards have changed siginficantly as to what's deserving of an "R" or "M" rating. Even look at what is allowed on regular TV these days. Conan O'Brien wasn't even allowed to say the word "crap" when he started (and he is on late-night!)
Thanks Anth67 for your genius calculations. Really. Way to go. I know you must be above calculus with those mathmatical skills behind your brain.
but everyone buys rated M games *___*
Let's just hope this all changes, before we're all wearing bow ties, and buying perfumes that smell like lavender.
