McDonalds blames videogames for obesity

Posted on January 8th, 2008 at 11:49 EDT

The obesity epidemic in America seems to always be one of the hot button issues; however, never would we have imagined that this would occur. Fast food legends, McDonald’s, has just pointed the finger at gaming for being a major contributor to childhood obesity.

Steve Easterbrook, CEO of McDonald’s UK, believes that the restaurant business has a role in the problem, but points the finger mainly at gaming.

“The issue of obesity is complex and is absolutely one our society is facing, there’s no denial about that,” said Easterbrook. “But if you break it down I think there’s an education piece: how can we better communicate to individuals the importance of a balanced diet and taking care of themselves?” – Did you try to stop and think about not serving 1,300 calorie value meals to kids?

He then followed that up with, “Then there’s a lifestyle element: there’s fewer green spaces and kids are sat home playing computer games on the TV when in the past they’d have been burning off energy outside.”

PSU is now highly anticipating the partnership between Jack Thompson and McDonald’s to bring justice and gym memberships to all in the video gaming world.

DaveW , there are very very few cases in which metabloism is different between people. The thing is how are those people were nurished when they were kids , and what did their parents do to avoid having a kid with a slow metabolism. My mother (!!) always taught me this simple thing : eat 4 times a day , small , good healthy meals.Dont overdo it.But eat 4 times a day at least.Do some work out ,do sports , go to gym 1 hour a day. That way your metabolism is always fast. And you are burning calories like mad.

People who think that "im going to go on a diet and i will eat 1 meal a day" will never EVER get any thinner.Eat many small and healthy meals is the best way to have a good died , get thin and stay fit.People think the less i eat the less i get fat.Right and wrong at the same time.Your body needs to eat several meals daily , just not ridiculous amounts of crap food.

LOL! I play much, and I would rather eat their receipts than their "food"!

If you go buy a cheeseburger you eat 330 calories. By ordinary walking you loose 0,475 calories times your weight per kilometer. That will mean if a 70 kilo man walked 1 kilometer he would loose 33,25 calories. Which will take approx. 10 kilometers to loose a cheeseburger from McDonalds.

Now, the body is always burning calories. Even when you sleep - not many, but it do. Using a controller burn more calories than sitting down normally. And you don't take in calories by touching the controller either, so it's impossible to blame computer gaming.

PS. And McDonalds IS NOT A RESTAURENT! It's an eating place! It's a disgrace to call McDonalds a restaurent.

Never have I seen more comments on a topic than this one. We should all exchange diet tips on other posts too.

As far as I'm concerned its all about balance. Eating sensibly and in moderation. I don't see how blaming McDonalds or video games has anything to do with how we look. Nobody puts a gun to our heads, we choose to eat these types of food we choose to play on video games we make it our lifestyle. Makes me laugh when a fat b@5t@rd tries to sue McD just because he chose to eat their meals five times a day.

FYI I go to the gym four times a week eat whatever I want and spend at least an hour a day on my PS3 and computer.

p.s.- i could eat a whole bag of doritos playing cod4 all day and sitll be fit at 143 with abs. All it is, is excersize its parents faults for not getting their kids into sports at an early age. Don't blame video games, because people like me still play sports like crazy and then play video games alot, its just a balance that retards don't understand.

Why don't we stop pointing fingers at the easy targets and start pointing fingers at our fat kids and their fat parents.  It's not McDonald's fault, but if lazy parents didn't feed their kid's that gross, nutrition lacking, processed crap 8 to 10 times a week, and made it a "treat" less than once a week, then we wouldn't have a problem.  I've known lots of hard-core gamers that are not obese because they eat right.

wow how ridiculous a statment is that, You know if they didnt make triple cheese burgers and crap people wouldnt have anything to make them fat, they'd just sit around playing video games and eating carrot sticks. Well maybe not something that healthy but  seriously its not like the game is telling a kid to eat fice slices of chocolate cake a day.

Sure, sure....

You need to run flat out for 50km, do 243 pushups, and swim 27 laps at an Olympic swimming pool just to burn off the fat contained in one cheese burger.

Even so the steroids, antibiotics, and chemical additives will still shrink your nuts to the size of a pea and give you big girly breasts. No amount of excercise can totaly save you from Fatdonalds.

McDonalds is a HUGE...no pun intended...reason for Obesity, high blood pressure and heart disease. There is 1600 mg of sodium in 1 quarter pounder with cheese. Something to the effect of 35g of fat and 800 calories. Thats just the burger. A single at that. Add in a large fry at a whopping 2000mg of sodium and you have more than your entire days intake of sodium in that one meal. You have your daily amouont of fat as well. Try not making your burgers taste like salt lick, and use a higher grade of meat in your products. That way these kids dont need to run an Ironman every day to keep up with the amount of calories and fat are in your horrid food.

Read the article before you post people.  I actually applaud mr. Easterbrook for what he said.  He basically said that it is the parents' fault for not taking responsibility and actually watching what you're kids eat.  He in no way blamed the videogame industry for obesity.  He simply said the truth; that kids no longer get out as much and that videogames play a part in that.  It's not a pretty picture, but it's at least true.

Oh this is rich, so god damn rich. I started laughing uncontrollably when I saw the title.

Yeah kids, get out and burn some calories so when you do get hungry, you can stop by your local McDonalds and pack some more pounds on. I'm pretty sure I game or sit at a computer anytime I'm not in college, and I'm not obese.  You burn more fat gaming than you do at McDonalds. At least you have games like DDR to burn some sort of calories rather than shoving overpriced, grease-pit food down your throat.

I guess they weren't making enough off the medium fries being $1 so now we get small fries instead.

---

I love the irony though, of most McDonalds having video games inside their building.  I see a lot of controllers, but I sure don't see DDR.
