Media Molecule talks LBP delay, reveals new release dates

Media Molecule has commented on the recall of the highly anticipated title LittleBigPlanet. As many of you are already aware, Sony has begun a global recall due to offensive material found within the soundtrack of the game. We've included an excerpt from the developers below; they're just as disappointed as we are.

"We learnt yesterday that there is a lyric in one of the licensed tracks which some people may find offensive, and which slipped through the usual screening processes. Obviously MM and Sony together took this very seriously. LBP should be enjoyable by all. So within 12 hours of hearing about this issue involving a lyric (in Somalian, I believe!), we prepared an automatic day 0 patch and had a new disk image ready; however a decision was made within Sony that the right thing to do for quality and support of people with no online was to replace existing disks. They assure us that they are doing everything in their power to get things straightened out as fast as possible, and will announce dates soon."

LittleBigPlanet will be released on October 27 in the United States and October 31 in Europe. Coincidentally, this was the original release date for Europe before the game was moved up a week.

Stay tuned for our review of LittleBigPlanet this weekend.

while i'm still shocked this got through, i have to give sony kudos for biting the bullet and replacing the discs.  patching the game would allow the offensive content to be accessible to those without internet access.

Ok, this is ridiculous.  This game is about being creative. If I complain that I am offended by something will you delay it for everyone else and fix what i don't like. Ok,  I am offended by fire and and i think you should remove it from the game!!!  seriously this is crazy, eveyone is worried about making others angry instead of releasing things the way they created it.  If they don't like the lyric or whatever then don't buy the game.  I am sure this is going to sell well.  Thanks a bunch for delaying a the game!  why allow it to be sold to those that don't care about the lyric or what it means etc......

This really pisses me off! Now I have Motorstorm 2 and LBP arriving the same day (sort of) and R2 arriving a week later, this blows. I pre ordered all but none of them are paid off and I have a certain budget to adhere to (a wife and 2 kids barely allows that). I feel like kicking someones @*ss right now. Sony should know by now that controversy follows them even while sleeping. They should've known and not included this song, period.

If they replace the discs for offensive content they should replace my Burnout Paradise copy too for it being in miles and yards and not being able to set it in French whilst this was all possible in the DEMO. I bought it in the netherlands, should have bought it in Belgium...

That's.  I can wait 6 extra days.  Even though I wouldn't be offended the right thing to do is remove the content.  Good job on Sony's part and MM for manning up to the mistake and for taking swift action to fix it.

This is crazy because the stores already have the discs.  I was at gamestop wensday picking up Dead space and he asked if I wanted to pick up my copy.  The manager heard him and stepped in to say that they had the disc but they were street dated.  Now I wish she was not near to hear it so I would have my copy.

markwesker,, i dont think that somalia has a big ps3 install base, but guess what it was offending to all muslim, and guess what how many muslim countries are out there, and how many muslims players have a ps3, i do think it would hurt the sales.

@ 8, i really do feel bad for u, so u think that a terrorist would be sitting on his couch and playing a ps3 eh? grow up

LittleBigPlanet is the PS3's flagship title - for this reason Sony can't afford to take any risk in alienating people.

maybe it's offensive because the game is rated E? it's still stupid to delay a highly anticipated game of a so-called "offensive lyric" i could care less, let me be offended (i might not of been at all!)

If it removes things that offend, in any religion, then thats fine. That is not the intent of the creators of the game. I have played many games which can be considered offensive.... but that was the goal that they were aiming for. Let MM and Sony keep it as clean as possible. What happens afterwards is no fault of theirs.

people here don't seem to understand that if someone had been affended then they could sue sony and Mm for millions and if that was to happen in like a week of the release, we could see a company with great potenial(Mm) file for bankruptcy(bad spelling, I'm sorry if I affended anyone lol)  It is like an extra few days, So I say man up and look foward to Littlebigplanet 2 because they haven't been sued.

@ anyone throwing a fit and blaming Muslims: how can you possibly generalize that all Muslims are to blame for this. Its hilarious that its so easy for you to hold millions of people responsible for the delay of a video game just like that.  I won't bs anyone im not happy that its delayed but i have respect for sony because that took a lot of class to do. But here, lets make you kids happy say that it is offending Muslims, has anyone ever heard of a something called ethical responsibility? In making LBP,  I seriously doubt that MM were trying to offend anyone but in case they do, how likely is it that that group of people will want to buy a MM game again? Or if sony just let it go how likely is it for those people to buy Sony? Plus the more people they offend the bigger the consequences. I know its tough but you guys have to look way beyond yourselves. Sony and MM have so much to lose in terms of law suits and the potential of losing thousands of customers over this. They’re pretty smart guys its obviously not worth it.
