Back in the early stages of this 2008, the gaming media were unanimous in their belief that the next twelve months would ultimately prove to the year of the PlayStation 3. However, with delays affecting numerous releases including PlayStation Home, the in-game XMB and Killzone 2, many observers found themselves quietly doubting as to whether or not those expectations would be met.
Fast-forward a couple of months to the release of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, however, and things are looking decidedly more positive for the Sony console – and SCEA’s Vice President of Product Marketing, Scott Steinberg, is confident this is only just the start of what promises to be an auspicious year for the platform holder.
"This is only the beginning of an ongoing software avalanche for PS3 that includes titles such as LittleBigPlanet, SOCOM: Confrontation, MotorStorm Pacific Rift and Resistance 2 that only PS3 owners will be able to exclusively enjoy,” he stated.
On top of this incredible list of exclusive games, Steinberg is also hopeful that MGS4 will facilitate wavering PS2 loyalists into making the next generation transition with the PS3.
With the fact that 75,000 MGS4 PS3 80GB bundles went flying off the shelves on release, Steinberg may not be too far off the mark, as the game – as we found out over the weekend – ultimately proved to be everything one would expect of it.
