Metal Gear Solid 4 to feature limited sixaxis ability

Metal Gear Solid 4 is set to release on June 12 and so far has carried with it not only a ton of hype but more recently, a ton of news.  It seems like the entire gaming media is rotating around MGS4 this week and everything that it has to offer.  This is just one more bit of news to chalk-up to that slate.

Appearing in the new Electronic Gaming Monthly, Ryan Payton, Assistant Producer of MGS4, discussed how they were going to implement the tilt-functionality of the sixaxis controller.

"I think the problem with this feature is it was severly overhyped," says Payton. "It was talked up as Sony's answer to the Wii Remote. The trick is to use Sixaxis sparingly and have fun with it. I don't think anybody wants to play a long game while consistently having to tilt the controller around. Rather, it's fun for the player when they're given a chance to use it in short bursts-- that's how we're approaching Sixaxis in MGS4."

We here at PSU believe that this is probably the most appropriate approach that developers should be taking with the motion sensing capabilities the controller offers.  It shouldn't ever be used as the answer for the Wiimote, but just as another element to enjoy gaming through.  We'll keep you notified if anything else is released in regards to Metal Gear Solid 4.

Well from what i remember, Kojima really wanted more that the controller would have rumble by the time the game came around. He stated that from the beginning. I guess he and a majority of us all got our wish. Also, he stated that sixaxis will be implemented in unique ways but also didnt give any sense that it would play any major role in the game. This pretty much confirms things he stated before. Can't wait for the game though.

I'm glad the developer understands this. I also don't like over-use of the sixaxis controller. An example is Warhawk where you have the ability to control the jets with your sixaxis controller. It is an option, however using the sixaxis is much more difficult than using the buttons, and people are more likely to kill you because it takes more time to move the jet around. I like how resistance used it to get enemies off you that get too close and grab you...things like that are how the sixaxis should be properly implemented into a game. MGS4 should be great!

thats exactly how i feel i don't wanna have to move around with the controller in my hand moving it left and right lookin like an idiot the whole time im playing cause sometimes i like to lay down when i play and relax.

I almost forgot about the possible Sixaxis controls in a game.

I think that the Sixaxis controls could be used for throwing grenades. For those of you that have played Uncharted know what I'm talking about and how it will be. When I first started using the Sixaxis to throw the grenades, it took me a few tries and it felt unnatural, but when I got the hang of it, there wasn't a problem and it's easy.

I think that it's a good idea for Konami to use the Sixaxis controls sparingly because they know that the Sixaxis controls haven't really been popular in some games with reviewers and if they decide to use Sixaxis, they should probably make it optional and can be toggled ON or OFF.

I can't wait to pick up the Special Edition.

I agree.  Don't make it a main focus to use it as a main attraction for the game.  Use it for certain abilities or functions and you'll be good to go.

"limited" ability is not the best phrase to describe Konami's implementation of the Sixaxis.  That suggest that there is not enough.

Now days if a title has 100% Sixaxis controls, then it is too much.  If they have now tilt support, then fanboys get turned off.  I think Konami made the perfect decision by providing the tilt support but now over-doing it.

Limited control suits me fine, been playing the first MGS recently for nostalgic purposes and other than the psycho mantis bit there was no gimmicks with the controller and I like that. If in doubt leave it out do not try and fix something that is not broken just for the sake of adding the functionality. I am sure kojima knows what he is doing and will use it in a way that no other dev's have. Can't wait for the release.

They have a point in it will be hard to use the SIXAXIS in the whole game, but use it in situation that fits to the use of it... maybe in the part where you are useing the Metal Gear mk II, or driving a tank if you can lol

Mgs has always been good, even when it had not sixaxis.
Adding this will certainly be much better.

You can also use the sixaxis to change the octocamo just by shaking the controller.

psn id: gingo.... this is a good approach to using sixaxis and is correct even though folklores use of it was excellent for a game like MGS using it sparingly is he correct way

They should make it appliable to certain game scenes/scenario's where you can perform a move not normally done on the controller.

    • 1:44pm GMT - March 2nd, 2008

I agree 100% of course it should be an option and not all sixaxis gameplay. If Lair would of done the same thing it probably would of gotten better review scores and sold more.  Motion control is fun and sometimes interesting to use, but do not make it mandatory at all.

The way Uncharted used the sixaxis, and RFOM for getting fire off of you I think are the best ways to use the controls. I would have thought it was never meant to replace the Wiimote. If I wanted to play the Wii,I would have bought one.

I like the idea with the "short bursts" instead when it' needed. Sounds good to me.

Dave...with all the MGS4 news coming out lately, they really have you working overtime now eh?! LOL... thats good for us.
