Microsoft to use PlayStation Home as business tool?

A number of major corporations, including Microsoft, will be taking part in a PlayStation Home project to try and cut costs in the workplace, claim the Advanced Workplace Associates.

The UK based initiative is the brainchild of Dr Nipan Maniar and Manish Malik from Portsmouth University who, in conjunction with Advanced Workplace Associates, will be piloting a scheme that will see a number of companies using the virtual world to hold management meetings. Other companies tied to the project include the financial services company, Ernst & Young, and the financial management company, Merryl Lynch.

The official press release states that:

"The firm’s clients include Microsoft, Merrill Lynch, Ernst and Young and numerous companies in the Financial Services sector with large white collar worker populations - executives from which will take part in the research project starting late February, 2009."

Someone's surely made a mistake here. Microsoft wouldn't use PlayStation Home for its meetings, would it? Maybe a Sony vs Microsoft employee virtual fight/text slanging match in the central plaza during their lunch breaks would inject a bit of excitement into Home. Lord knows, it needs it.

Wasn't Home 2005 tech demo in 2008?Then why oh why do white collar employees need to use such outdated tech?Might it be becuz of the fact, that as usual M$ was talking out of it's a*s,yep that must be it.

first of all,  all those people would have to buy a PS3.  then they would have to pay Sony money to buy the clothes.  ha!!  M$ giving Sony money?! that would be awesome.  but oh, i agree.  didn't they say that home was old tech or something.  Bite my a#s M$!!  stay out of home!!

I don't think that's a bad idea,  a lot of companies have conference calls but all they can do is hear each other's opinion/concerns, now with Home they can actually show videos, charts, slide shows etc to everyone no matter how far away they are.

I know it's funny thinking that Microsoft would be doing that but if other companies can take advantage of the FREE Home service (companies don't want to spend an extra penny on anything) and help it to grow then they should be welcomed.

Erm you guys do realise that Microsoft doesnt just make game consoles, right? Both Sony and Microsoft are huge businesses that cover many markets hence the fact that they may well be rivals in one market and very good partners in another. Businesses are out there to make as much money as possible in any way possible and Sony and Microsoft as whole arent run by a bunch of console fanboys so they're not gonna say "Sorry but f*** off I dont like the Xbox" or vice versa. If by cooperating, they can mutually expand and bring benefits, then why shouldn't they?

^^ are you feeding your console fantasy?  Sony and Microsoft have done business with eachother before and it didn't turn out good at all, but of course that was a long long time ago.  I highly doubt Microsoft changed their ways since 10 or so years ago.   Unless your a game company/developer, you wont make money partnering up with Microsoft.  Please go read article's that say how Microsoft partners up with other big companies and then turns around and pulls a cut-throat move on them, bringing them to court, etcetc so they can have the rest of the profit.  Microsoft has done that so many times that there are so many companies that wont even partner with them again, that includes Sony.

Do you really think Microsoft made $100,000,000,000+ for being good and honest partners with other companies? LOL

I hate Microsoft! All they do is shove money down video game companies. All they care about is money not originality.

The question is why. Why not just use something like GoToMeeting that runs on computers they already have, instead of having to buy all new hardware. It doesn't seem that cost effective to me.

This could be funny.  They will have to buy PlayStation 3s to use Home, although they probably have them already to spy on the PS3 and trying to make the 360 better by copying stuff as usual.  However, the funny part will be when Sony monitors their meetings (they are already monitoring casual talks between players) and Sony could either sabotage their meetings or use the information they found out from Microsoft's meetings to improve the PS3.

Really? It would be just as effective (possibly more) and cheaper to just use webcams or something like that. You would have to get a ps3 for every person who was going to be at the meeting to use home.

But funny if it's true, haha.

That proves that Playstation Home was something very much worth inventive and some of the Microsoft employees were forced to use it because it's that kool.

@25, millions of people use home and love it, it's actually a really good social networking service, most people that say it's a steaming pile of crap thought it was going to be a game or something when in actuality it's a tool thats good for communicating with your friends and play a little pool or finding some new friends without being in a hostile enviroment like resistance 2 where your not really focused on finding new buds to play games with, it's also very very good for finding new members for your clan or getting some people to jump into an online match when the in home game launching feature takes off it will be even better.

Well, with Sony pulling in some decent scratch with the virtual items, naturally m$ interest is going to get piqued. This announcement probably has nothing to do with the Home we dwell in, but a more streamlined version geared more towards net meetings and the like. I highly doubt we'll see Kaz and Bach having a dance-off in the central plaza. Well, maybe Kaz...
