The entertainment industry as a whole, ranging from music, movies and videogames, in one full of misunderstood concepts and business politics. Sometimes to ensure success, a corporation would do under the table deals in hopes that the public doesn’t learn about the activity, all legal of course.
One company that has been under the speculation of this sort of transaction is Microsoft. From many people’s analyses, Microsoft is favoring HD DVD for the sole reason because they want both formats including Blu-ray to fail. By doing this, it would allow them to bring in digital downloads as the newer video media form.
Michael Bay, an outspoken Hollywood individual had this to say:
“What you don't understand is corporate politics. Microsoft wants both formats to fail so they can be heroes and make the world move to digital downloads. That is the dirty secret no one is talking about. That is why Microsoft is handing out USD 100 million dollar checks to studios just embrace the HD DVD and not the leading, and superior Blu Ray. They want confusion in the market until they perfect the digital downloads. Time will tell and you will see the truth.”
So could this also be the reason why Microsoft created the HD DVD add-on for the Xbox 360? It’s a possibility, but with Blu-ray currently in the lead, we could be seeing a definite winner in Sony’s high definition format, thus thwarting Microsoft’s plans if they are indeed true.
Source: Blu-ray

Those dirty bastards. I would not put it past them to do something like that. Its not even a good idea. When it comes to movies, I would much rather have a hard copy than some download than can be erased or get corrupted.
Not in this world of time. If MS wants a digital download, the world would seriously need to have a download rate that is unbelievably super ultra-fast! It would required a download rate in the same time as physically going out to the video store, choose a movie (in the highest definition of course) and rent it! You'd have to have a very massive storage system to keep these downloaded movies or whatever. MS, not in this decade, not in this time of world.
The stupid company microsoft they have no feelinga and trying to destroy the blue ray. Its not enough for them yet, that they are killing people by sending viruses through the internet explorer and trying now, to let blue ray fail.
i agree with matrix, the world seriously isnt ready yet for digital downloads. But in a way that mp3 downloads are killing the CD mayb this will happen with blu-ray. No1 wants to buy a CD player anymore do they? well i dont. So this could b the trend for HD movie formats too. At the moment tho theres no way i could download a file that big ina resonable amount of time.
Digital downloads wont happen ....I belive in my life time i think my genration (22yrs) would not trust it like having the cd in your had..if you download music you can pt it on a cd if you download a movie thye probably dotn want you putting it on dvd
been a Bay fan of recent. go dude
Simply put it wont work. The ones who know about hd and blu ray and digital downloads are tech savey kids. like me. If you give the option as to hd or regular digital hd types or hardware will always win such as blu ray. in order to make succesful hd downloads possible most computers would need to have atleast a terabite if storage and that isn't going to happen any time soon. nice try microsoft. U use to be a decent one of a kind company but all your doing is getting soft as time goes buy.
hmmmm , i wonder what sony gotta say about this ? .....
M$ has been aiming for Digital downloads for LOOOOOOOOOOOONG time, but the fact is that there will always be the lower, middle and upper class internet speeds, and that is why ppl prefer the much simpler put it in and play optical disc.
Those Microsombies and his xbots. They are infected with d T virus and want to rule the world. Linux, PS3 and open source thats where everyone should go for.
Those Microsombies and his xbots. They are infected with d T virus and want to rule the world. Linux, PS3 and open source thats where everyone should go for.
i speculated this a while back, when that whole 360 with the HD-DVD built- in drive surfaced.MS went on record andsaid they wasn't making an x-box 360 with an built-in HD- DVD drive because HD-DVD wasn't the proven format. then 2 day later they started talking about iptv for the 360. u can see the writng on the walls, ms ins't even pushing the fact that they have the hd-dvd external drive to the public, o-well you'll have to pay for the live service then for the download= more money for ms. DAMMM ms you're some good criminals.
Not going to happen, broadband needs to become far quicker before this happens, not to mention that the internet is already bursting at the seems. Gates Nil - Sony one
MS has been spreading this gospel for a while now. It isn't a question. I dread to think what happens when tangible media dissapears. This rights and properties issues will hit an all new high. Backups? Backups on tangible media?
stupid microsoft
When you can download a movie for free on bittorrent or other method why would you want to pay for it? HD? who wants to waste the time downloading a 9gb or more high def movie file? M$ is stupid but I didn't realize they were THAT stupid.
I wouldnt put it past them at all.
They probably want to make their own format. And put tons of security and hidden code so only microsoft can do things with the new disk. Like they are getting sued because they are doing things in windows that only allows media player to view video files, and not third party programmers. Basicly they want to create a monopoly, then once they have it, really squeeze any ability for competitors to capitalize on the product. You heard it here first.
if blu ray want to win the war then they have got tot make the latest releases more avalable, the last few big movies to come out have said its going to be on blu ray but when you get to the shops thay have only got dvd............sort it out in the uk jap tossers
I hate Microsoft!
psn id: gingo... microsoft really suck if this is true we dont want just digital downloads at the present time and i would still like to buy games and films on disk
Mass exceptance of Digital downlaods is still 7-10 years away =BLURAY will win. And Im sceptical of this assumption, I think they want / wanted HDDVD to succeed.
Go Sony! Thwart the evil Microsoft! Thwart them good!
you're all crazy. digital download will happen. its not even a question. WIthing3-4 years you will be able to download an HD movie on a broadband line, available for view starting immediately. Cable TV will also come through the internet. photo prints are gone. VCR tapes are gone. tapes are gone. vinyl is gone. CDs are almost gone. what in the world makes you think DVDs and BR discs will stick around. sooner or later ID cards will be gone, banks will be gone, credit cards and their paper statements will be gone, all bills in the mail will be gone, MAIL will be gone, later on paper will be gone. come on now. welcome to the 90s. Its the world wide WOW!
I never really thought about it, but it's obvious when I think about it. I hate Microsoft. Them and their download things.
I'm going to install Ubuntu next time I format my computer, if I don't buy an extra harddisk before then. It's much much better.
@cashville
I'm more interested in what Microsoft is going to say about this.
MS should fail...theyre like nazis!!!
Try downloading movies on 56k modem. Where I'm from, broadband doesn't exist to the masses...just the rich & lucky--Amishville, USA. It will be a LONG time before digital downloads are accepted in my area.
Also, I can't understand how somebody would want to pay for something, but not have the actual physical disc to put in their collection? I collect blu-rays...have over 50, and enjoy having them stacked on my shelf with all my games & other dvd's. People WOW over my collection--that is gone with a digital library.
i´m really getting sick of microsoft and all it´s B.S.
microsoft always have stupid ideas about games :)))))))))))))
PeeS3rulz you got a crzy imagination u say almost evrything we got right now will be gone what the fu@# makes u think that... u say banks will be gone probably not even in 20 years imagine having all your money n other stuff in a digital downlaod it would probably be easy to curropt and like 10 times easier to hack... i rather have mails box, CDs, paper and ect..... than having a digital downlaod it wouldn be safe
Okay mirosoft is being ridiculous right now, but i guess their thinking in the long run about 5-10 years or so. All of North America dont even have broadband and HDTV's let alone the world. Old school people perfer the old school method of putting a tape or disc in and let it play. Half this world isn't even computer literate so how would they think they'll make money by years time doing this. I'm a computer geek myself but im not sitting around waiting for hours on end for one HD movie to be saved. Plus this will give hackers another reason to hack and recieve movies an profit from it. (Can we say bootleg) It's already happening now so how is the movie industry going to make money with stuff like this occuring. Peoples are fools thinking this wll happen in a short term I.M.H.O.
its all about tha money. at the end, us the consumers will detirmin wich is the best.
i'm not saying people will like it. im just saying its going to happen and you better deal wit dat.
as far as the cost of broadband, i think anyone that can afford an HDTV, a blu-ray player, and $40 BR disc can afford broadband.
I already understod this;) Microsoft will get back their money many times over if they succeed with this! They get a monopol-like situation on the market just like with Windows.
Most people like to hold what they had bought in their hands. Digital Videos common ms, your idiots if you think this will take over. That means bigger hard drives, harder to take to a friends house or on vacation. Its dumb. Blue ray will win :D if not in america, then world wide :D
Well it's good that blu-ray discs exist so people can back up their terabyte harddrive full of downloaded movies on a few blu-ray discs, for safety and security, and portability. Oh, I wonder if d/l movies will have special features, commentaries, picture in picture, upcoming blu-ray 3D abilities, and of course full 1080p picture and uncompressed hd audio. If not, I'll just keep adding to my blu-ray collection. M$ are greedy idiots. They are holding back consumer ability to get the movies they want by bribing other studios, they bribe for game reviews for high scores. They are officially the worst.
Michael Bay is fun when it comes to the format war. He is quite outspoken about being for the big Blu.
This was said by Michael Bay. NOT someone to have a credible background on this subject. Previously on this subject, He stated that he wasnt going to do Transformers 2 because 1 was going to HD dvd. After he saw 300 on HD he retracted his comment.
If Mr. Bay was anymore of a flip-flopper he should run for office. Dont take this too seriously.
M$ d/l service is only 720p, not full 1080p, no uncompressed hd audio. Also, their service automatically deletes the movie a day or two after you begin watching it. No thanks, that's why I don't do on demand cabnle, cause I don't feel like paying a fee every time I have the desire to watch my favorite movies. Plus, with a physical disc, I can take it to a friends house. Blu-ray movies are the total package with full video and audio specs, special features, and blu-ray discs are the ultimate data storage/backup medium. Stop fooling yourselves, blu-ray aint going nowhere. I didn't pay for a 1080p tv and a nice surround sound system to download a gimped version of a movie.
Thats pretty under handed if that is to pass. Still I want to see others come out and fill in the details and of course see the retort of MS on the subject.
Those dirty bastards
Gates said this before the HD-DVD add on was even announced. Backing HD-DVD to confuse things is just devious...lol ! Of course digital downloads WILL happen. All this crap about "oh our networks can't cope" etc... wtf?! 10 years ago who even heard of broadband, 20 years ago who heard of the internet? Technology is accelerating expotentially-deal with it ...even now we can get 6Mbps out of a 4Mb exchange due to algorithm tweaks. HD-video/game download will happen. You'll be able to thumb through your collection like the nano's coverflow system, without cluttering the house, I reckon next gen systems won't even have a drive- but setting the 360 up for such capability may have been a bit premature.
Just try to understand that physicl discs will NEVER be replaced by downloads, as people WILL be using blu-ray discs to back up whatever data/ media they have/will download. Also, the movie on blu-ray disc offers much more special features and interactive content which you just can't get off of a simple download. Couple that with the fact that the blu-ray version of a movie will be full 1080p and lossless hd audio. I say again, downloads will never replace discs because they have LESS to offer the consumer. At best, they will co-exist with disc based media, as on demand cable co-exists with blockbuster and retail stores now. Once again, blu-ray is the total package and definitive compilation of a movie. I know for sure when Star Wars is released on blu-ray, I will want the blu-ray disc with all of the hi-def special features, not a measly 720p downloaded version.
the day digital downloads become a GOOD idea, is when 75% of the WORLD population knows how to operate 85% of a computer, plain and simple. the fact is not a lot of people are tech savy, and know one wants to be forced to use things they don't really understand, ****...I"ve had a computer for more then decade and I don't know **** it's already frustrating enough as it is with all the spyware, and viruses. the day I truely know enough about computers is the day I will except digital download over anything else, and I can assure that won't be anytime soon, possibly not even in my life time. I will stick with buying 'physical' things with my money for as long as I live. (also, don't forget that the reason the PS2 is still kicking the 360's *** is because a lot of people are just now switching from what ever console they had previously to the PS2, because they can finally afford it, believe it or not but a lof of people are still a generation behind, and you should always look at the CURRENT generation owners as the 'early adopters' and when PS4 comes out then the PS3 will be the defualt standard much like the PS2 is now.) I added my two cents, yay! lol
Those stupid --------! M$ is seting up for the biggest Mistake of the centery!! There plan is going to fail and there going to lose Billions of $$$$$!!!! Man, but there tricky. That don't surprize me at all! thoses cheap --------!!!!! >:-{]
They already have digital download for gaming. Unfortunately the market will embrace both for several decades before transitioning completely. If I spend $60 on a game... I want to be able to sell it at one point to get some of my money back, and not have to delete it off my hard drive to make room for another game. They better be GIVING AWAY 10 TeraByte hard drives if they want this to succeed.
@just8
are you and idiot?? Michael Bay doesn't have the luxury of picking the format, Paramount does... and it will come to Blu Ray. Toshiba paid Paramount to sign an 18 month contract to stay exclusive to HD DVD. When that contract is up... bye bye HD DVD... the only studio they will have support from is Universal.
just buy more blu-ray to shove it in microsoft's face
Michael Bay just doesn't care anymore. I love it. Damn Transformers should have been on Blu-Ray. And if this is true Microsoft should be smacked. IN THE FACE!!!
Xbox 360 is a Crummy DVD Player. LOL.
@peeS3rulz:
I don't know where you get your information on digital downloads being the only available format in the next 3-4 years. "sooner or later ID cards will be gone, banks will be gone, credit cards and their paper statements will be gone, all bills in the mail will be gone, MAIL will be gone, later on paper will be gone. come on now." You probably won't live long enough to see half of what you're saying happen. And as for physical formats disappearing when it all comes down to it a physical archive of important information will always exist. Whether it's CD, Blu-Ray, DVD etc. For a civilization to depend on "virtual ware" is suicide and people understand this. You have very high hopes for things that will not happen in this lifetime for most of us. And even if the formats change holding a physical hard copy of important information or merchandise will never go away no matter what you or anyone else thinks otherwise.
Good luck Microsoft.
