Mirror's Edge dev praises PS3's cell processor

Posted on May 10th, 2008 at 06:38 EDT

The developer behind the upcoming First Person Shooter (FPS) Mirror’s Edge has said that the power of PlayStation 3’s Cell processor allows the team to “push the resolution of our textures much higher."

Speaking at a presentation this week, DICE General Manager Sean Decker said, "thanks to the incredible processing power of the PS3", the company is able to producer its "vision of what the game really is".

In a later interview with Videogamer.com, Decker commented, “The great thing about it is that there's a lot of little things like, Faith there when she's walking like this (points to Mirror's Edge trailer showing Faith tightrope-walking across a beam), Sixaxis controls, super easy to implement and say, OK well just balance it and then you've got it there, as opposed to teaching a player to say, oh let's push this button or that button."

“The other thing is the Cell really allows us to push the resolution of our textures much higher and we've taken full advantage of that as well. So there's a lot of little quirks to it that we really like and our engineers love as well as our designers,” added Decker.

Despite this, he was keen to point out that neither the PS3 nor Xbox 360 version is superior to the other, suggesting "each one is different".

"The controls are different," he explained. “The other thing is the way the architecture in each one of the machines is different. It allows you to do different things with them and emphasise things, like let's try a higher texture resolution on this one, and if you want to push the GPU or the CPU, and how the engineers want to balance out what's most important in this game and how you want to bring that out in each one of them.”

"At DICE we have lead engineers on all of our major platforms and they're the ones who really architect it and say, you know what this is, what this platform is great for and this is how we're going to bring it out on it. I wouldn't say one's better than the other. Again they have different quirks. It's kind of like driving several different SUVs and saying one's better than the other."

Stay tuned for more on Mirror’s Edge in the near future.

I wish D.I.C.E were never bought up by EA. They're still great developers nonetheless which is why I'll keep an eye on this game for sure.

I agree with Wrath. I think EA in ways will hold them back. I'm very very excited for Mirrors Edge, its totally new and the graphics are amazing! But i hope we [PS3 owners] arn't getting some Xbox 360 port.

psn id: gingo..... this game looks really interesting but i cant seem to get hyped about it when i know EA is somewhere working behind the scenes on it, its a disappointment that EA try and take over and ruin every good game company but thats business i suppose

Uuuummmm.....

Not sure about this game. I´ve seen some gameplay footage and parkour FPS?!
I dont know if it will work. I hope so, good games are hard to come by. If they thought parkour FPS is an interesting concept, they might have something in their sleeves to keep us hooked to the game. I just hope its not going from A to B in the less time possible.

I read about this game quite a few months ago in Edge magazine here in the UK and it  really looked interesting then. Having now seen the ingame PS3 footage from the gamers day event in London I have to say I'm really looking forward to this game now. It looks new and fresh and interesting and its graphical style looks unique and stylish. I'll be keeping a close eye on how this game develops I just hope DICE can realise their vision and ambition for this game.

It's a port. They can be as nice as they want. Don't trust 'em.

I'm in talks with another EA developer who is making a game using all the cores in the cell, and is a dark platformer. It sounds really cool. I can't wait til the mainstream hears about it. This is surely good news as well. It means EA is finally tapping the ps3 and saying, "hey.. wake up!"

I will be keeping an eye on this game in particular ( as well as LBP).

Its possibly offering something that has been missing from gaming in many genre's....freedom of movement. I don't know about anyone else, but I am getting sick and tired of the usual cramped game designs, or the movement of characters that feel as if they are wearing straigh-jackets.

Granted, it can't be an easy task to achieve for developers considering what also needs to be written into games....but this just may be a 1st. If it succeeds in the feel I think it aims to achieve , then it just may brighten up the future of later games.

Imagine an FPS with this freedom of movement.

I just sincerely hope that it isn't all hype, leaving you only with limited & specific routes from A-B. That would be as bad as making a racing game where the cars are put on rails ( Scalextric..lol).

Some SUVs have larger wheels for traversing terrain better, others get better gas millage and are cheaper to operate over time... see you CAN say one SUV is better than another, it wasn't so hard.

Just out of interest does anyone know if the fabulous music that accompanies the recent trailer to Mirrors Edge available as a separate music track? Or was just a small musical piece created only for the trailer?

Well,i don't about SUVs but i do know that an Evo is better than a Subaru.

Im thinking the same thing.
I absolutely loved the atmosphere the trailer left off with & that the music helped create. It would be nice to know if there is somewhere we could get a hold of it.

They have to be politically correct with their comments. EA wants as large of a profit as possible, so it's best not to say one system is better. Not that it really matters any more... all this lame consloe war crap is played-out. Bring the blockbuster titles and quality content. This game looks promising though.
