Moore likens videogaming to a "red-headed stepchild"

EA sports supremo Peter Moore has led an impassioned defence of videogaming in an interview over on gama this morning, expecting sales of Madden '09 to trump efforts of big-budget Hollywood blockbusters this month.
"Madden continues to be one of those one or two titles that can deliver $100 million-plus months, and we've done that again," said Moore. "I'm very happy for the team, and very happy to be able to drive such growth for the marketplace."
"When consumers look at entertainment value per dollar spent, movies cannot hold a candle to an online game," he continued. "I've been in the industry long enough to be here before online games even existed... here we are now, and 100 million games will be played online for the lifecycle of Madden 09."
Moore was a little more cautious concerning the overall picture however, stating, "we're still the red-headed stepchild; and we're still not mainstream entertainment."
$100 million initial sales on the basis of one of the best-reviewed sports games to date can't be too far off the mainstream.
Can it?

Yes. It can be far off the mainstream. That's what dorks don't get right there. Everyone keeps asking "Why does the Wii sell like it does?" That's why. Appeal towards casual players. You guys that have devoted hours and days to gaming for so long, hanging out with people who do as well, that you think the whole world is like you (or worse, should be like you). The fact of the matter is that they are a hair away from proving how addicted we all are to this hobby, as you guys probably realized about yourselves by now.

I'm sick of hearing about people defend Video Games as a enterain medium. They are and they will be the biggest.

Yeah, I think games are the best value for money but alot of other people don't like games, generally because they aren't into the controller because it's too complex... Nintendo will shut them up ;). Anyway £12 on a film that lasts about 2hrs or a videogame for £45 that can have 10-12hrs gameplay (excluding online) is a much better deal apart from the price of the console :o ... unless you buy alot of good games... LBP for the WIN!!!!

@7, you gan count me out too for this game, never got got excited about sports game, I prefer tha real thing! In the 90's it was mostly kids that play video games but with sony more adyults are playing, I guess mainly because since the 90's weve all grown into adults but which still love video games. never the less hardcore gamers are the best consumers software wise, we just can't get enough of gaming!

@7, believe it or not, I still play Madden 05. I will wait another year or so before buying another Madden game.
I actually liked GameDay a lot better then Madden but oh well. Usually to see the huge difference you should purchase a Madden game every 5 years or so. I am surprised they just don't update the rosters through a patch which can easily be done. When EA makes a football game, expect to be ripped off, that is if you are going to buy a Madden game every single year.
Electronic Arts = Mass gaming development. Mass gaming developement = low quality games. I just don't like EA
