Motion-sensing is 'essential' to PS3 lifecycle, says SCEE

Sony Europe boss Andrew House has labelled the PlayStation 3’s upcoming motion-sensing controller as an ‘essential’ component in the platform’s ten-year lifecycle plan.

Speaking to Gamesindustry.biz, House said of motion technology, “That’s one of the essential,” though went on to extol the machine’s capabilities as a Blu-ray player, a feature that the executive feels has got ‘lost in the mix.’

“But the PlayStation 3 is also one of the best Blu-ray players around for high-definition movies and that almost gets lost in the mix,” said House.

“That gives it an enormous sense of longevity, people want the best if they are buying into high-definition entertainment from a television standpoint or from a movie standpoint. That’s an inherently long lifecycle and it helps bolster the traditional gaming lifecycle as well.”

The motion control will give the PS3 a new lease of life!  It will almost be like having a new console.

I look forward to flicking through the XMB with motion control, selecting music and video tracks with it, firing bows and arrows, hacking people down with swords, hitting 350 yard drives, all with 1:1 3D detection that is only available through motion control

Good ,I hope they have all the bases covered and dont screw up releasing the wands without buttons or ,more importantly ,without an analogue stick.Thats absolutely vital for the tech to workd with serious games. The absence of that will doom Natal to gimmicks and minigames and MS will put all their weight behind it ....a wrong decision ,now its the moment for Sony to come back with the right tech and the right software for it .

And bundling the PS Eye and the wands would be essential.

How is something like this going to prolong the life of the PS3? Just because it worked for the Wii don't mean it will work for the PS3, we will have to wait and see I guess.

This and the xbox equivalent will be a close one, they both are great ideas and im looking forward to trying them both.  But I have a feeling that the Sony product will be much more reliable, tougher and better than its competition, however, I feel it may be pricier.  Lets hope not.

@1 Whilst you're hitting 350 yard drives, I'll be hitting 360 Hard Drives. See what I did there...

Stay away from casual gamers Sony, Nintendo has a Stranglehold on them - let Microsoft bring about their own inevitable downfall by entering the market of gimmicks so you can reclaim your throne as the rightful King of gaming. If you stick to hardcore, high deifnition experiences and stop attempting to try out all these new innovations, you're almost guaranteed to be in the same position you was with the PS2 by the time the PlayStation 4 is released, with one in virtually every household. I have complete faith that PlayStation will be able to reclaim its position as the most popular console of all time. Bring us Real-Life-Graphics, that's all your market needs!

Seriously though, I don't understand why I addressed Sony as if I was directly speaking to them, I doubt there's any chance of any of their employees reading this...

@5 - what are you talking about?  They already provided a real time demo of 1:1 tracking, putting many different devices, virtually, into the hands of the demonstrator.

Unless you are a serious conspiracy nut who thinks that the motion control demo was an extremely perfect coreographed, fake display...  including "fake" adlibs like "tickletickletickle!!"

I am really excited about the motion sensing, it seems like it works really well from what I saw on E3

Those motion controllers looks like female sex toys. Sony should've never show those things until they were ready. Bad move!

Motion control is only essential so much as everyone is freaking doing it. But then again now we can get all those wii games but with better gameplay thanks to a more sensitive controller and much better graphics... but if it comes down to the wii version of a game versus a true PS3 version that uses a  controller I truely hope deveopers continue to give us the PS3 version with maybe the wii version as a add in bonus.

Maybe they'll include an option of having a "laser pointer" on the screen to show where you are aiming. I'd prefer that to a Wii-style reticle.

I actually thought the motion controller demo from E3 was really impressive. If they can deliver as promised, I think it will be a great thing for Sony.

The motion controller can be fun and useful. There are definitely some aspects of gaming which are easier to control with a motion sensor, just as there are some things best done with a joystick and some things best done with a mouse.

Motion sensing is absolutely not "essential" in any way. It will be useful, but there are stlil plenty of good games that can be made without it, and many that will be better without it.
