The NPD Group has revealed the latest US hardware figures for the month of September, showcasing a 47,000 increase in the number of PlayStation 3’s sold compared to the previous month. Overall, however, Sony’s machine was largely dominated by the competition.

Before taking a look at the results, keep in mind that the Xbox 360 did see a price drop in September, lowering the Arcade system from USD 279 to USD 199, the 60GB model from USD 349 to USD 299, and the Elite model (120GB) from USD 449 to USD 399.

Wii - 687.0K
Nintendo DS - 536.8K
Xbox 360 - 347.2K
PSP - 238.1K
PlayStation 3 - 232.4K
PlayStation 2 - 173.5K

In wake of these numbers, Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) CEO and President, Jack Tretton, said that the platform holder is confident it should experience a large increase in hardware and software sales as we enter the holiday season.

“We remain confident that our footing is solid as we enter the holiday season this year,” said Tretton.

“Our new 80GB PS3 model has made its way to retail shelves and into consumers’ living rooms as the best value for both their gaming and entertainment needs.

“If the impressive pre-sale numbers and ratings for LittleBigPlanet, SOCOM: Confrontation, and Resistance 2 are any indication, we anticipate hardware and software sales to continue to lift in October as we officially kick off the broadest and deepest software line-up this holiday, including LittleBigPlanet, SOCOM: Confrontation, MotorStorm: Pacific Rift and NBA ’09: The Inside.”

With the whole credit crunch (greedy banks!) and with America (the worst place hit by the crunch) being place with more prospect because of the sheer number of gamers there, then in order to get ahead a price drop on the ps3 is really needed. The same goes for us europeans. With the state of the economy going the way it is no ones going to able to afford expensive christmas presents this year. Wake up SONY.

I think a Price drop would help out for this holiday season. Many families dont have the expendable income they did a year or so ago. Buying that $400 Christmas present becomes less and less likely. While I think the price of the PS3 is good considering what you get w/ it I also think Sony needs to understand that the economy is not as strong as it once was so a price drop may be warranted

What can I say?  I am happy that I have the PS3, which I'm sure is the best console out there.  If other irresponsible people can't aford to upgrade to it, that's not my problem.  I managed my money well (great job, homeowner), and now I reap the rewards.

PS3 doesnt need a price drop it needs people to realise its the better machine, ive said it before and ill say it again..............you get what you pay for! If you want cheap components get a 360, if you want short lived novellty gaming then get a Wii, its a true dust collector

If Sony really thinks it has any chance of outselling the 360 this Christmas, then they better announce a price cut.

Yep..#1 but with a combined sales of more that 640K units or almost twice that of MS leaving MS as a distant third and Nintendo as a solid number one.

I dont think just dropping the price will save PS3 now.

The reality is, PS2 sales are in decline but it's not translating into more PS3 sales - I'm sure a large proportion of the remaining PS2 volume are for replacements and not new users. This is a large group of people with lots of PS2 titles that want to continue to play their games. That PS2 base is not making a logical jump to PS3 because there is no backward compatibility on offer.

Slowly but surely, those users that need to upgrade are moving to Wii as it offers significantly better graphics & audio compared to PS2 and it's also cheap. My biggest fear is that RPG & Adventure titles from Nippon Ichy, Atlus, Square, Capcom, Techmo, Bandai, Koei etc... all start appearing on the Wii. This would be a disaster for Sony. I'd have to say that if I heard franchises like Phantom Brave, Kessen, Dynasty Warriors, Shin Megami Tensei, Shadow Hearts, Ring of Red, Fatal Frame, Clock Tower ... any such strategy, RPG or survival horror franchises where going on to Wii - I'd go buy a Wii the next day. It would start an even bigger stampede than there already is!

Others are also moving to Xbox 360 as that user base is growing over the original Xbox user base. Those that want more graphics over gameplay will happily join the ranks of Xbots as its cheaper than PS3, has great online fun, the graphics look great and there are heaps of titles. Plus the bargain basement selection of titles is starting to resemble what PS2 had going for it. I currently pay a premium for the same title on PS3 and I resent that.

To fix sales Sony needs to drop the price yes - but they also need to restore Backward Compatibility and start working with valuable franchises in promoting an upgrade to PS3 and the continuation of Sony's platform of choice and home for RPG, and action Adventure...

Sony is going to be trounced this holiday without a price cut. PS3 is way better, but people will still buy loads of 360's because they're half the price. Kinda like how the public buys a ton of Honda's and very few Ferrari's.

20GB, 40GB, 60GB, 80GB - common Sony leave us alone with this kind of variety, everyone can replace his HDD without any problems, why are you bothering us with this sh**t. You made many fans mad with this oh and you better take a look at your price politics, low prices mean high sales, you can't count on all Fanboys to boost your sales into the sky, y'know the games getting more and more expensives you gotta at least buy the console for a low price...

im so sick of people saying the ps3 needs a price cut. you pay for what you get. simple as that. wii's are cheap x box's are cheap. but then again, you pay for what you get. how much would the price drop you so badly need be?? $50? $100?. how hard is it to save up an additional 50-100 dollars? could i interest the people who want a cheaper ps3 in a sub prime loan?. lmao

People who don't work or earn much money would be the ones running around wanting a price cut.

I think Sony are wanting for next year the PS2 probably won't be sold anymore and the PSP-3000 pushed majorly and major new games and MMOs for the PS3 will be out next year along with a price cut or cuts.

There's some top notch looking games coming only for the PS3 next year light on the edge is looking tops it's a steampunk fantasy game only for the PS3 from Australia.

I havn't seen anyone talk about this game yet, and there will be others I noticed Sony at E3 were always saying when FF7 came out it was a major first for jap RPGs or rpgs in general, then another first or some major game like GT.

These things havn't quite happened yet and those 2 games didn't happen on the PS2 until 2-3 years in.

So I'm thinking Sony are going to do the same with the PS3, work slow then bang out some major new stuff next year.

Well in my opinion it doesnt really matter if it outsells the 360, the PS3 is the better quality console and thats why it will always be more expensive than the 360. Thats life, thats just the way it is. You get what you pay for. No way can Sony afford to produce a 199.99 PS3 console. I mean what will that kinda sku have? one usb port, no controller, and no hdd at all?? But what they should have done was keep the 40gb sku and mark it down to 299, and also come out with a 160gb sku and include Resistance 2 or LBP and sell it for 499.99. Or another 80gb sku and include R2 or LBP, and sell it for 399.99.

@Xtag in the first place ff7 and grand turismo (GT) came out on the original playstation. Second what do you think about RFOM, uncharted, motorstorm, assassisns creed not to mention titles like LBP which are all new exclusif games for PS3. @puisher, I think sony should be thinking more like you, they should also put back retro compability with PSone and PS2 games in every sku!
