NetFlix to offer streaming video via PSN?

Posted on October 24th, 2007 at 23:22 EDT

During a quarterly earnings conference calls, NetFlix has announced its anticipation of growing demand for streaming video content. The company claims that downloadable movies are a serious venture and plans to look into different means of providing such content across many different outputs, potentially including the PS3 as a possible provider of Netflix downloads.

Reed Hastings, Chairman of the Board, President, and CEO of NetFlix, Inc. had the following to say about the company's current stance on streaming video:

"In terms of enabling the viewing of online content on the television screen, we are exploring a variety of options, including Internet connected, high definition DVD players, Internet connected game consoles, and dedicated Internet set tops, with a variety of partners, trying to understand the best ways to provide inexpensive viewing of online content on the television."

While not very specific, Hastings clearly says that internet connected game consoles are being looked at for possible partnerships in this venture. The PlayStation Network and Xbox Live being the only viable options, so there may just be talks in the work on getting streaming video through NetFlix soon.

That would be awsome... highly suggest though to look into getting more HDD storage if your interests lie there.

well u can always do external hdds, but increase in storage would be necessary on the consumers part.  This would be fun to try out.

Sony.......oh Sony............if you get exclusive rights to this, it will be HUGE!!!!  Advertise them as the only option for Netflix members to steam movies for free. Now most of us here know that its possible other ways, I do it now as it is, but for all the AOL subscriber types out there, they will eat it up as being a plus, on top of the BD player.

I'm pretty sure you wouldnt need that much more hdd space because it's being streamed, so the data could be deleted as your progess. and they wouldnt let you keep the movies on your hd, too easy to share w/ others. it's probably gonna be like $2 for a run through (kinda like renting it). it'd be cool if they had brand new movies on there though, so i wouldnt have to goto the theaters

Wow. If the PS3 gets this it would be killer. I have always wanted netflix but I hate snail mail. Streaming media would be an interesting way to get the media.

For the people that dont know, they offer this right now via PC. Its free, in addition to your plan. So I get 3 at a time, which means that I can have 3 physical discs and still watch 2 movies online......this is sweet if it comes through. I hope Sony sees this an dgets exlclusivity
