Next version of Linux to come pre-installed on PS3

The PlayStation brand has been very loyal to the Linux operating system since the days of the PlayStation 2 and even now on the PlayStation 3. Sony has allowed the installation and running of the open source operating system and Yellow Dog has been very generous offering PS3 users the ability to download and install the software free of charge on Sony's console.
Now it seems that Yellow Dog will continue this great partnership as the company has made it public that the newest version of Linux will come preinstalled on future versions of the PlayStation 3. Yellow Dog Linux 6.0 was just released a few days ago and the TerraSoft website revealed that Yellow Dog Linux 6.0 would be "Available from YDL.net Enhanced accounts and pre-installed with Sony PS3s -- Tuesday, February 5, 2008."
Yellow Dog Linux 6.0 brings new features to the operating system such as:
* E17 & Gnome installed by default, KDE included.
* Gnash, the Flash work-alike.
* Ekiga VoIP, Pidgin IM/IRC, and Fluendo codec installer.
* kernel v2.6.23, gcc v4.1.1, gblic v2.5, and Eclipse v3.2.2
* The only Linux distribution to include by default Cell SDK v3.0.
* IBM iRT (interactive raytrace) demo available via YDL.net Enhanced.
Although famous for being user-friendly and providing the most in terms of flexibility, it is difficult to predict if this is a feature that all PS3 owners would appreciate. It is also interesting to see this announcement leaking out and whether the could mean that the pre-installed version of Linux 6.0 will be featured on a new PS3 SKU that could possibly be on the way.

CRAP, why do they keep improving the PS3??? When is Sony gonna start caring about the early adopters? The people that had faith in them since the beginning??? The early adopters stood by them with the crappy library, the excuse after excuse for lack of rumble, delayed games, delayed everything, and broken promises? Where is our hand out? Why dont they toss us a freakin bone?? I mean what am I gonna do if my PS3 craps out now that my warranty is up? What the crap man? Im glad I bought a 360, now I cant keep the two from fighting! SH** I gotta quit drinking!!!

Linux isn't hard to install on a PS3. Making it useable is another matter. The system just doesn't have the RAM to cope with it, and so much of the PS3 is crippled when Linux is running that it becomes impossible to actually get anything useful done. I couldn't even get my PS3 to scale a video in real-time, because Sony doesn't allow other OS's direct framebuffer access. It'd be nice if they took off the chains and allowed it to be useful.

If you dont like Linux dont use it. No-one is forcing you to use it just because it i pre-installed! You can even Uninstall it if you have something against Linux. Why do you D3v1l react as you do? If you want linux on your PS3 just go to www.YLD.net and DOWNLOAD it. After that you install it on your PS3 and walla! Sony is caring about you and giving you the opportunity to install linux on any PS3 + they given you the possibility to upgrade your HDD after wish. So please stop act like a baby ;)
"whether the could mean that the pre-installed version of Linux 6.0 will be featured on a new PS3 SKU that could possibly be on the way". This is just wild guessing from the writer! NOT FACT! If it is a new SKU the only new about it is probably just the HDD and that Linux already is pre-installen so you dont have to do it your self. What would be cool is if Sony is making a new SKU with more RAM, USB-ports on the back, 2HDMI (one for audio 7.1 and one for the picture) and so on. If that hapens D3v1l would have something tho cry about :p I would just be hapy for suchlike news!@Lalander. I think you have right about that!

Rubbish, why can't Sony just sell the ps3 as a games console and blu-ray player. Honestly what percentage of people have linux on there ps3, a very very very very tiny percent. Now people who don't want linux have to waste time removing it. Its like buying a new pc and spending the first hour cleaning all the sh!t off of it.
This is why the ps3 can never beat the xbox 360, because Sony have completely lost it.
PLEASE SONY FOCUS ON GAMES NOT F@CKING LINUX

@Ferre if this is just wild guessing by the writer, then why does the headline say "Next version of Linux to come pre-installed on PS3"? The headline makes it sound like a fact, not a question or a suggestion. There would still be reason to complain if Sony did make another SKU just because they made another SKU. I agree to run Linux it would be nice to have more RAM. It would be great to have 2 HDMI ports and even to come standard with a bigger hard drive. But let's be realistic, all the SKUs are making M$ look smart. (and I hate me some M$)

Why all the linux haters on here? At least we're given the option to install linux without having to mod our machines. If you don't want to use linux then just don't use it. Just play your video games and give thanks that there are people out there who actually ARE interested in linux and other programming languages. Without them, this website, the forums, the PS3 and all of it's games would not exist...

Linux in NOT hard to understand... and unless you have a 20GB PS3 it will not take up half your hard drive... only 10GB. There is an option under system settings to "Install other OS" You can reserve 10GB for linux and the rest for the PS3 or vice versa. Or you can choose to get rid of linux completely so all of you hard drive space is available to your PS3. If you still don't get it you can google "linux PS3" and you'll get a TON of info on what it is and how to install it. If you still can't figure it out, then don't bother with it.

@Muzikguy I didn't refer to that if Linux will kome pre-installet on PS3's or not, because Terra Soft already today is selling PS3's with Yellow Dog Linux 5.* pre-installed! They have done that for a long time now. I was refering to weter or not the YD Linux 6.0 would come pre-installed on a new "better" PS3 SKU like D3v1l seemed to think. I admit I didn't read the article good enough the first time because i did miss the part where it says "the newest version of Linux will come preinstalled on FUTURE versions of the PlayStation 3". So yes it will presumably be on a new SKU. That probably just menas a bigger HDD and nothing ellse, so thats nothing to cry about. You can always uppgrade your HDD if you want :) If it was like a new SKU with more RAM etc I understand if people get upset a little because they cant upgrade that. Electronics improves fas. Today you get a 300GB HDD for the same prise as a 120GB a year ago. Nothing strange about that! The same pass for TV's. If i buy a expensive TV today I cant get angry the next year because a new one is out for the same prise with better picture.

I think Lalander is right... Terra Soft (the creators of Yellow Dog Linux) is selling PS3's from their website with Yellow Dog Linux preinstalled RIGHT NOW. Go to their website and see for yourself. Sony is not going to release a SKU with Linux preinstalled. The information from Terra Soft's release schedule for Yellow Dog isn't worded very well, and is creating all this speculation.

@zarajoe. The reason why sony just dont sell it as a games and bluray console. IS BECAUSE IT NOT JUST A GAMES AND BLURAY CONSOLE. THE PS3 IS A COMPUTER ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEM. A MULTIMEDIA DEVICE. And it should not be limited to just games and a bluray player. And for the record. The PS3 has already beaten the 360.

i dont want them to loose the linux support but really we got freaking computers why dont you allow devs to use all but the 1 instead of having to spare 1 and 2 for linux. i think lots of the problems know could be easy solved and i care for 100% games rather then linux.

Too bad Sony can't find a way to dual boot the PS3, or at least let you choose what you want to boot up when you turn it on. I'd really like to try out Linux but I can't find the time.

To answer the questions about why anyone would want Linux on PS3. For one you can easily rip Blu-rays and watch them on your Windows box. No need to buy a Blu drive for your computer. Rip 'n return with Netflix. Not that I would ever do that though because its illegal......

@Punisher99
OK your calling the ps3 a alround multimedia device, do you really think that linux is the best platform to use for multimedia content? No its not. Do you think its a good OS to have on the ps3 anyway? By far NO, all of my friends do not even know what linux is, let alone how to use it.
Look at the 360, that is also a multimedia device, like the ps3. But does Microsoft market it as a multimedia device? NO, its primary function is playing games and thats what the majority of people buy consoles for, to play games. All the ps3 extra features should be looked upon as being just that "extras" and not apart of the ps3's main functionality. All this multimedia entertainment is what I bought my laptop for.
Man what have you been smoking to think that the ps3 has beaten the 360. Thats fanboy talk right there. The ps3 has a long long way to go before it gains a larger install base then the 360 and has more games available for it (and ps2 and ps1 games don't count)

@zarajoe: Linux doesn't seem to me to be a major part of Sony's marketing plan. I have never seen an ad of any kind even mention Linux. Even here on PSU there is very rarely an article on it. IMO it already is an "extra" feature. Your certainly entitled to your opinion but I think if someone doesn't have a laptop or a computer hooked up to their television it provides a nice way to enjoy the internet in your living room. For example if your with a group of friends and want to show a youtube video it makes a perfect venue for it that 360 doesn't offer. I am curious though because you said "Do you think its a good OS to have on the ps3 anyway? By far NO". What OS would you prefer? It doesn't have to be Linux. Lots of people would put Windows on it if it were possible I’m sure. Unfortunately there is no PPC Windows (that I know of).

I'm not sure what linux is. But based on what I'm reading here, it seems to be a very provoking topic. I don't really care what they offer on the new PS3's. As long as the one I paid for is working, that's all that matters. I play games, listen to music, watch movies, and look up a couple youtube videos with my console. If they want to make more things available, (included or added on.) then more power to them. It's no reason for ANYONE to get upset, or cry over.

Hmm.. TerraSoft has already done this from the day YDL was released. You just had to buy the PS3 from them.
So I'm not sure if Sony is gonna do this or they are just announcing all new consoles they(TerraSoft) sell will have the newest version.
Gotta wait and see.

linux is a nice os with people that are experienced in computer software. I wish this was already planned in the launch of the first wave of PS3 for the early adopters like me. I just can't seem to have time and money to upgrade my HDD and install it on my PS3

I think Linux pre-installed PS3's will help casual gamers or technol-able people experience the features LInux has to offer without going through all the hard steps. For instance.. Yesterday my friends computer fried on him, so he resorted to the PS3 for internet. But he still wanted to watch videos (flash) and access programs, but could not. So i told him about Linux. He then went through the steps he found on google. But with the knowledge he had, he ended up formatting his hard-drive without backing up the files first. O SH!!!! ...... you know what happens, all his game saves and demos were gone. For ex) 7 months of Oblivion gone.. YIKES!
So with Linux already being on the PS3 poor soles like my friend Corbizzie10. Would not have to suffer, due to lack of knowledge.
Also @ D3v1l.... Your not getting screwed over, if you want Linux for your PS3 you can simply go get it RIGHT NOW if you wish. You do not need this said, new SDK.

@FinalAtk
If I had to choose a OS I would pick Windows or Mac OS X, because they handle multimedia a lot better then linux and are a lot more user friendly then linux. I'm not saying that linux is a bad OS, I'm saying why bundle the ps3 with an OS that does not handle media files very well, no where near as user friendly as Windows or Mac OS X, it has been shown over and over that linux still isn't ready to truly compete against Windows or Mac OS X, and that the majority of people do not even know what linux is. What are people going to think when they turn on there brand new ps3 only to find linux something they have never even heard of stealling have there HDD space. Like "ingingort" said if people want linux they will get it themselves. Instead Sony should offer linux on the playstation website, with clear instructions to install it. Oh and my laptop is not hooked up to my TV

@zarajoe
Well, the only reason why Linux is not ready to compete with Windows and Mac OSX is because nobody takes time to use it. The OS is up to the level of windows and mac and even suprasses it on many level when it comes to OS related functionalities. It's very secure, it's file system is really efficient and stable, etc. What is missing is only good and useful software. Problem is, software is driven by userbase, Mac has less software then Windows for the same reason, and it's logicall that linux as even less software. Plus most Mac software is financed by Apple which as a good reason to do so, becuse they wanna sell more hardware. So if the PS3 would come with linux, it could mean bringing more software to linux and if tomorrow everyone switched to the free OS Linux, I bet one month later it would be just as good if not better in every way to Windows and Mac.
