Ninja Theory: Heavenly Sword 2 was never in the works

Posted on June 17th, 2008 at 15:55 EDT

Earlier today a rumor was posted stating that after a meeting with Sony Cambridge Studios and Ninja Theory, Heavenly Sword 2 development had been halted. Well, according Ninja Theory's Tameem Antoniades, the title was never in development to begin with.

"We (Ninja Theory) never started work on HS2 as we wanted to focus on new multiplatform IP. Sony owns the IP for HS and we have never been privy to what they would do with it," he explained.

"As for moving, we have been planning to move to larger premises for future expansion for the best part of a year. There is nothing bitter about the move," he continued. "And the rumour that the team has been disbanded is ridiculous. We have had an unbelievably loyal team especially as we went through some difficult times securing a new publishing deal. We have a new publisher and are busy on our new project which is going very well so far."

He ended on a rather depressing note for Heavenly Sword fans.

"HS is far from our thoughts at the moment."

Even though we're excited to hear that Ninja Theory is well underway on their new IP, the lingering fear that we'll never see Kai again festers in our hardened hearts. For more overdramatic soliloquies on all things PlayStation, stay right here on PSU.

Maybe Sony doesn't want HS2 because of GoW3? I know I wouldn't want two similar games out at the same time

give the HS2 to the developement team of GoW3 = win. HS was good, but didnt live up to alot of hype. GoW team should able to make a better sequel after completing GoW3.

I guess they didn't like making money then :P

It would be cool for Sony to hand the project over to another studio.

SPOILER - DO NOT READ IF YOU HAVEN'T ALREADY PLAYED HEAVENLY SWORD ----- IMO Im glad if they don't make another HS. I loved the game and loved the ending,  Nariko died for a cause and the sword is well hidden, lets leave it at that.

That sucks, i really liked Heavenly Sword and I was looking forward to see a sequel someday, but i guess that wont happen any time soon..

I thought they said a long time ago that they were working on a new game and that HS2 may or may not come depending on the new IP.  Essentially, either HS or the new IP would get a sequel, depending on which was better received.

Heavenly Sword underperformed. I think Ninja Theory is making a new IP due to that factor. Or Sony handed off HS to another studio. Like... Santa Monica.

well if they knew how to make a game longer than 6 friggin hours, they wou;da banked and have been all over the sequel. but no. they ruin a perfectly good IP.

I'm glad they aren't working on any exclusives. Sony fans have come to expect a certain calibur of work from their exclusives, but sorry ninja theory, all the motion capture in the world won't set a game to our saasfied expectations.

Think about it, HS was a big disappointment and for a studio trying to make a name for itself, you can't have games that disappoint.

@Clover09

WTF? At least use spoiler tags or something. Some people are late to the party.

@Alti

Heavenly Sword was up to many of our expectations. For me, it was just a rental and not yet worth a buy, but some of those cutscenes were unforgettable. I'm speaking AFTER playing MGS4, and I can say that Ninja Theory was truly successful with their motion capture. Just by reading expressions, I could take more from those cutscenes than most other next gen titles.

I do understand what you're saying, though, and if Ninja Theory couldn't get it right with an exlusive, I don't know HOW they think they're going to be able to pull it off with multi platform.

@Clover09 - you should know better than that.

psn id: gingo... i really hope they make a second one as the first was a truly great game for the short time it lasted, if they could make it slihtly longer and keep the same scale and greatness i think it could be received much better

I really did enjoy Heavenly Sword.  I hope they eventually make another one.  It did have some major flaws, but it was better than a lot of the drivel I've played lately.

Oh well, It'll get here eventually, and at the people who are saying it wouldn't be as good as God of War you're probably right but let's be fair they said the star of HS2 was going to be Kai and I think Kai's move set would be completely different to Nariko's.

this made no sense to me as ninja theory had already confirmed that the next project they were working on was not HS2 but a multiplat project

Hmmm.. well it sounds like they're a bit bitter towards Sony, and that they actually hate HS from what ive been reading ever since it was released. It got great reviews though - and i loved it, it was just too short thats all. I really do hope they make another HS - i'd buy it in a heartbeat. I even kept my copy cause it really is a fun game.

SONY would be dumb not to make a HS2 mainly since it have a fan base. me personal would play heavenly sword before ninja gaiden and a hand full of sword used games. in my opinion HS is in the top three with assassin creed and zelda being better then it.  to bad for ninja theory HS wouldve been a greater game if it had came out on PS2. to bad for SONY they lose another development  so long to kai.........fair well to nariko..............

With out exaggerating, HS still one of my best game, I still play it from time to time, you know why it just challenging to learn/unlock all he moves. I still enjoy the cutsenses , and I even memorize some of HS dialogue and repeat it a long with them:

My favorite is when Kai says peek a boo (.....) right before she shoots General Fox in the forehead with her arrow

Nariko while facing Whiptail: Oh it’s so much better when you're ANGRY!!

"Twing Twang!"

Nariko while facing Whiptail: "Oh, Its so much more fun when your angry...Sister"

Now!!! do you think I'm freak to love this game?

So Long Kai, I will miss this game so much

I TRIED to bring this information up to Joystiq.com I posted the same neoGAF links and information, but you know what Joystiq did? They erased all the comments that debunked the rumor and any comments that mentioned erasing the rumors. It had to be about 50 comments or so. They went as far as BANNING my account for debunking the rumor. They want to keep this information hidden, probably just for flamebait and to get people to visit their site. They erased so many comments that I took pictures as proof.

I'm tired of people ripping on a game because it's too short. HS really is a great experience. The graphics are beautiful. The action is fun, it's very GoWesque, but how many games these days are COMPLETELY original? And frankly, I like that it's short. Keeps you wanting more, and doesn't have you wandering around on pointless errands just to extend gameplay hours.
