Ninja Theory: Heavenly Sword cut-scenes surpass Beowulf

Posted on June 12th, 2008 at 07:09 EDT

Heavenly Sword developer Ninja Theory has stated that some of the more memorable cut scenes in the PlayStation 3 exclusive blockbuster convey a level of emotion greater than that of Hollywood CGI epic, Beowulf.

Speaking with Gamesindustry.biz, Ninja Theory Co-Founder, Tameem Antoniades, commented: “I think gamers are used to poor cut-scenes. That's one of the reasons they are disliked so much.”

"I do honestly believe that the best cut-scenes in Heavenly Sword surpass the best scenes in Beowulf in conveying emotion.”

"I see CG as digital make-up. So as long as the performance is there to start with and the CG data reflects the original performance, then it should be easy enough for a skilled animator to reach the emotional resonance of the actor.”

Antoniades added the team is keen to improve upon what they have already learned with the studio’s next title, commenting:

“If you aren't able to convey emotion, then somewhere along the line something isn't working as it should be. We did a lot of research in this area and know where the 'gotchas' are. So our next project will hopefully improve on what we learnt.”

Although details are scarce as to what the company’s next project will be, they have confirmed that it will not be a sequel to Heavenly Sword, as previously speculated. Reports suggest it may be accompanied by the release of an animated feature film, though nothing is for certain.

Stay tuned for more development as they break.

I agree with them. Beowulf got them on detail but more emotion seem te be conveyed in heavenly sword. Evven Uncharted did  it better than beowulf.

I never saw B-wolf, but the emotion in cutscenes in HS are great.  Especially the performance for the Kai character and the level segues for Nariko when she speaks to the sword (directly into the camera).  All in all, between the acting in HS, Uncharted and almost certainly MGS4, I'm happy with this generation's cutscenes so far.

One of the Main reason I Love this game was the voice acting and the animation expression that match it. I never played a game that I was looking forward for the cut scenes. Its too bad that they are not making a sequel to the Heavenly Sword, but if they make a animation movie I  would definely go and see it.

I have to agree with them as well.  The action sequences in Beowulf are not bad (especially in 3D), but the digital actors convey very little emotion comared to HS.

It almost made me cry. It's such a same this game did not sell what they expected. In my opinion, one of the main reasons the big last promises were not as good as it could be because Sony was pushing them to finish the game.

I love the jokes in this game as well.

Very good cutscenes in Heavenly Sword, that's for sure.  I don't know if they surpass Beowulf, but they were great nonetheless.

Meh, that's not saying much. The Beowulf movie sucked. A b@stardized version of the story with Sophomoric humor and characters that look as stiff and puppet-like as all the background characters in a Shrek movie. I'd say that as far as CGI alone, even Final Fantasy: Spirits Within was better than Beowulf.

Anyways, I want a Heavenly Sword sequel =)

as long as the demand is there i'm sure they would make a HS2 they cant afford to lose the fan base thats there.

I was preparing a "OMG WTH! Beowulf looked stunning" but now that I've read it, they're talking about emotion and I agree 100%!

There were times during Beowulf where I forgot it was CG but it was very emotionless - especially through the facial expressions! The looked like dolls!

Heavenly sword did quite the job with emotion, I must say.

I agree too. Just before Beowulf came out many on IMDB critisized the animation for being very much like they were wooden puppets. Heavenly Sword and especially FF Spirits Within surpassed this.

I've heard that Sony mentioned that Heavenly Sword will be a franchise, so they may be making the game themselve or someone else perhaps?

I do hope with their next title that it is as great as Heavenly Sword if not better then it.

psn id: gingo.... the acting in heavenly sword was exceptional for a game and i hope they keep that the same for the rest in the series

no. the voice acting was the best [art of the game considering how you can't instantly develope emotions for a character  in an action game, especially one thats only 6-8 hours.......doesn't happen
