No PS3 price cut this year, says Reeves

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) President David Reeves has confirmed that the company has no plans to lower the price of the PlayStation 3 in 2008.
“There is no price cut,” Reeves told VG247.com, adding, “We’re not going to drop the price this year.”
Asked as to whether or not he believes that software is the key to PS3’s success throughout Europe, he replied, “Yes, absolutely.”
“And I think it’s the games for Nintendo; I think whatever price they’re at, I think it’s the games that have really, really driven it.”
“We started off at the beginning of the year with GT5 Prologue, then we went to GTA IV, then Metal Gear Solid. There’ll be LittleBigPlanet, and then we move onto PES and FIFA and all those.”
“We’re on rails, and I think that those games are going to drive it,” he added.
According to Reeves, focus testing has deduced that young consumers in particular do not consider price as important as software or features when deciding to purchase a PS3.
“When you do focus groups with people, whether it’s in the UK or not, it’s amazing that - not necessarily children, but an 11 or 12 year-old boy - has in his mind… that he wants a PS3 because of this game or because of this particular feature,” he said.
“He doesn’t really think of the price because he doesn’t really have any perception of it. But, he’ll say to his parents, ‘I want a PS3.’
“If he wants a new bike, and he gets an old back, he’s not going to be very happy. Children don’t think about the price so much. The press think about the price: it’s got to come down.”
Concluding, Reeves again reiterated that there would be no price cut this year, but remained confident that the platform holder was maintaining enough value for consumers, pointing to the release of the 80GB and 160GB PS3 systems.
“We have not announced a price drop, but we have got an 80Gb [SKU] instead of a 40Gb [SKU] - now that’s interesting - and there’s going to be twice as many games, and there is a 160Gb [SKU] with 70 euros of downloadable content,” said Reeves.
“So we think that we’re keeping that value there. The former boss of Sony Computer Entertainment was Terry Tokunaka and he’d answer the question of, ‘Will there be a price cut?’ with, ‘I’m not saying in the long term future we’re not going to drop the price.’
“What I’m saying is that we’re not going to drop the price this year.”

Should think not too, for what you get its already as cheap as chips. especially when you consider sh1tebox's closest equivellent is the Elite which is a mere 20 quid less, for which you get a lot less, and yes i know the HDD is bigger......woopy doo at least on the PS3 it can be easily upgraded.

It is at a good price point, with skus that cover budget gamers as well as hardcore. You can't cut it too much as then it will be devalued. Sony's gaming section has to make SOME money and their losing money on every console already. I think people need to stop whining and start saving. For me, having played em all, PS3 is the best with the most value for my money. Wii doesn't have anywhere near the features and to get comparable features on the 360 (no bluray either) you need to but extra peropherals, so the price winds up being the same. And as I used to support that darn thing (I was a support tech at launch) I can tell you even now the quality is not there.

Ok, here is the thing. The wii is like @ $250 and the most basic 3pu$y is @ $280 and then we go to the pro which sits at $350 and the "elite" weighing with $450 and the beloved ps3 is 400 with an 80 gig. Now you average parent don't know much about gaming and what they do know is making that money to pay for the console little johnny wants. Now you being a parent, which console would you give johnny boy there? (take in account that your kid might break it and/or you aint got that much money; you got enough for the ps3 but you don't want to blow all your mula) THE CHEAPEST ONE!!!!!!!!!! The price cut is fro like 17 and older kids that have to pay their on $hit, i think sony needs to just have a simple commercial listing everything it has to offer to the consumer and what its competitors don't compared to ps3, done.

sorry but a range of models aint gonna get more sales, big exlcusive games n price cuts will get more sales.ps3 is beating the 360 only by a tad this year ,at that rate the ps3 will never catch up.the ps3 is worth every penny n more but that does not count for much it seems so a big mistake imo not having a price cut at least for the run up to chrimbo.....(credit crunch= expensive products do not sell no matter how good it is)

I would think a LittleBigPlanet bundle at the $400 pricepoint would be better than a price cut. LBP is the kind of game that Sony should want everyone to have, because it's popularity will be directly based on how many cool games (and game environments, as in name a movie and someone will make a LBP game out of it) the masses upload to the network. I almost see LBP as part of a PS3 game-creation system than a stand-alone game.

thats what i was saying instead of dropping the price they're going to give you more for your money basically with different sku's i dont really think they need to drop the price at the moment i say wait until first or second quarter next year and drop the 80gb core model down to 300 man that would sell like hot cakes

Well by the looks of it, Sony doesn't really need a price cut right now. The 80GB Core model on Amazon is selling really well and is even surpassing the $299, $349, and $449 Xbox 360 models. They're ranked number 7 on most popular on Amazon's site while the 360 models are ranked at 83, 85, and the elite isn't even on the top 100.
