No UMD conversion for new PSPgo

In news that may have an impact on Sony’s new handheld sales, a rep told Kotaku today that the company has scrapped plans for a system to transfer disc-based UMD games to work on the digital-only PSPgo. The Sony Computer Entertainment of America spokesperson said the UMD conversion program will not be available at this time for legal and technical reasons.

As you probably know, the new PSPgo will not have a UMD drive; instead Sony has opted for the new handheld to only use digital games. The PSPgo will retail for $250 USD, and games will be purchased and downloaded through the Internet.

It will be interesting to see if Sony offers any solutions for UMD transfers in the future, but for now, the company has no transfer system.

IMO there MUST be some sort of way to make this work....i mean if they at all expect people to make the "upgrade" from the old PSP to the "GO" (which is still a TERRIBlE name btw) then there MUST be a way to get your old UMD games onto the GO

This just gives sony haters more fuel.

In reality, it really shouldn't be a big deal.  The PSP Go is for the users who want an all digital device, while Sony is still supporting the PSP 3000 and UMDs!  It's not as if they're completely ditching the people who still prefer physical media.

Damn... I had a huge smile on my face because I never read the title correct and I thought it said NEW UMD conversion for new pspgo.... dayumm.  I will probably wait until it lowers in price before I pick the GO up.

Fine by me. Digital Downloads are MUCH better than physical copies. Most of my friends are making the upgrade to the PSP Go. :D

one of the main reasons why a transfer system wouldn't work is because people could just rent the game for a lot less than what it would cost to buy it and then transfer it. There's also the possibility of transferring the same UMD multiple times (to different PSPs). There's just no conceivable way for Sony to stop this from happening and therefor no way to come out with a transfer system.

I wouldn't be upset about this really. They're still supporting umd as well as the psp 3000. Psp Go seems to be positioned more towards the Ipod crowd, not existing psp owners, they're simply trying to tap into a new market. Besides with Memory sticks as big and as cheap as they are downloading games to a psp 3000 is really a non-issue, as far as that goes.

    • 2:45am BST - September 25th, 2009

My thoughts?  Idiots.  Then again without a second analog stick (a good one), and the ability to get one with a decent phone built in then I wouldn't buy one, so I guess Sony doesn't care about my thoughts, but there is no way  I would buy a PSP GO over a soon to be released 4,000.  A TON of people rip their UMD's and put them on a stick anyway so who are they targeting?  Now "if" the GO was say $100 then I could understand, but to actually have the balls to make it MORE expensive???

Sony, you have a freaking phone division.  You "could" have made the "GO" a phone PSP combo and people wouldn't be complaining near as much, but for some odd reason large corporations don't seem to work well or communicate at all.  Sony desperately needs a Steve Jobs type of person to run them.

Nice one, Sony. Really. It's not even an upgrade anymore. How did they not figure this out? Why even announce it without having something in mind? It's stupid crap like this that will keep PSP from making a significant dent in DS sales.

Anyone who "upgrades" their old PSP to a Go is out of their minds if they have even a small UMD game collection. I really wanted one, but with almost 20 games, why bother? Ugh.

I am pissed off because I believe that it isn't the move to the Go itself but the way they (Sony) are executing it that fragments Sony's handheld customer base.

You can't let your talking heads spout crap about such sensitive topics and not expect blowback when you total pull a 180 on what they claimed.

This version really is the PSP Blow!!!

Well why can't sony make it to were you take the old game up to Game Stop and trade it in for a download code.  It would be like exchanging the copy for an alternate version. Heck, then gamestop could resell the game and everyone wins?!!

I hate to say I told you so... no wait I dont.

I said from the begining this supposed trade in thing would fall flat due to the likelyhood of being over burdened with people sending in UMDs and run the risk of all sorts of arguments and attempts to game the system for the purposes of exploitation.

If you have a PSP already you DONT NEED A DAMN 'GO.

i only have about 5 games on umd so if they can get all my games on the store an upgrade is plausible for me. they already have WTF on the store and im pretty sure vice city stories will make it too since liberty city made it on the store today. but i dont think crimson gem saga will ever be on the store.

    • 5:20am BST - September 25th, 2009

First thought was damn that's foul but looked at as this: You can still download games from the store with the older models and keep your previous umd library. So you have the best of both.

    • 5:42am BST - September 25th, 2009

@10, All of a games info like its title are stored in the barcode on the case, all sony has to do is have a digital transfer kiosk at places like ebgame/gamestop where you take the UMD to the counter, its scanned in the system and a reciept/coupon with the games barcode or info is printed out, the barcode is registered in a network linked back to sony so it cant be used again, then u just put the coupon into the kiosk and it wirelessly transfers the game to your pspgo.

Edit: or as #18 said, it could have a download code on it also, then u can just enter it into the redeem codes section on the ps store and dl the game urself.

The PSP "GO" is a downgrade as far as i'm concerned. I've never been a huge fan of handheld gaming to begin with, but I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't sell any of these. I was turned off the second I heard they weren't including a second analog stick, but after this I've forgotten about it completely. They should truly have just released a psp2, instead of yet another re-hash.

This can´t be good, they absolutely need solid arguments for selling this thing for $250, and now they lost the most important argument of them all. I will be TRULY suprised if this don´t flop.

yeah, I though the same but isnt that just a serious waste of time!?!   To make it so hard just to play a game you already bought it absolutely counterproductive!

I have never owned a PSP and absolutely planned on buying a PSPGo. Week 1, for sure.

It doesnt effect me yet I still am debating getting one just for the sake of it being such a stupid move on Sony's part. Just laughably bad. How idiotic........like they dont want people to buy their product or something!?!

So what you guys are saying is you really thought that they would take tons of UMDs (rendered useless to Sony), even though the PSP 3000 (and 4000) will still be sold...and give you free downloads to their digital versions, because they want you to upgrade...is that what you guys are saying?

  46. O_G_H

    • 1:06pm BST - September 25th, 2009

See.  Netherdragon is exactly what I'm talking about.  He still has a PSP Phat.  He was never interested (really) in upgrading.  His track record shows it.  I'm assuming that he speaks for most (because if you haven't noticed, the first 10 posts of any opinion thread usually tells the story...then it repeats for 100 posts).  So the majority of you aren't getting it.  Big surprise.  But don't lie, it's really over the price (just like the PS3, duh), not UMD/digital.

Let me guess some small company thats been around for years and unknown to everyone suddenly pops up and threatens to sue Sony over a patent they own and some where in the designs of the converter there tech will be in it.

I really think the PSPGo is for on the move gaming without the need to carry all the extra weight in UMD's and cases should you carry the cases. The price for the PSPGo is way to much if only the PSP 3000 was like £125 and the Go £175 then you'd sell more.
